Unfortunately, sometimes seemingly cruel steps had to be taken to ensure future prosperity. Just because someone thought that their arm was fine and perfectly usable didn't mean it was true when a doctor could see that it was infected down to the marrow, requiring amputation before the infection spread to the rest of the body.
