Hmm... All the potential directions are possibilities if we're to take the meaning the story assigns them as a clue. The voices mentioned that it was winter, indicating North. Meanwhile our aim is to rouse our fellows from the grip of the flute's spell, which would indicate the West and its association with awakening. The voices also stated that the boy was in poor health, which would indicate a need for the energies of vitality and growth, thus pointing to the South. And the entire path seems to be a sort of puzzle, which would point to the East and its association with contemplation.

Of the four, West and South seem the strongest possibilities. Or perhaps the theme of cooperation is the key, and each of the doors meant to be entered in sequence.

[He pondered a moment before addressing the Phoenix again.]
