There are a number of things he's attempting to pay attention to outside of his own swirling thoughts: her expressions, the information she's giving him directly, any potential explanations to her presence and behavior in the path ahead—and even with his bitterness stolen by the mirrors, there's still a level of caution he keeps when traveling in public.
