It does mean it's only a dog. A particularly gigantic and vicious one that's been covered in phosphorus, but it's no spectre.
[Apart from the whole "magical corruption" thing going on that spawned it, of course. She has no idea what to tell him about Klint. Her character was nothing like him, nightmare-version or not.
The devilish pair seem uncertain about whether or not these people are a threat or a Baskerville who needs to be gotten out of the way. The sword has them wary for the moment, at least.]
