Saving Christmas

✵ SAVING CHRISTMAS ✵

As the sun sets and the moon rises on Christmas Eve, a strange sound of jingling bells is heard high in the sky as the snow suddenly begins to fall heavily upon the town. A heavy weight of sleep slowly overcomes everyone, and just as their eyes close they'll hear a loud, raging bellow—

That damn bastard!! I won't let you ruin—!

Before the words are finished, everyone will suddenly jolt awake and find themselves scattered in a strange looking town called Whoville. Although it looks as if it's supposed to be festive, none of that holiday cheer is evident. The town is completely ransacked with torn up decorations, broken gift boxes and toys. Even its colors seem faded, music distorted and muted.

All through the town the Whos stare listlessly at their hard work now ruined, some crying openly while others remain indoors in their grief. A brave few young souls try to help clean and bolster some cheer, chanting, "It's not too late, we can fix this! We can't let that Grinch get us down!" But many just shake their heads, their eyes dim. No one seems to have noticed the sudden arrival of new faces.

In the meanwhile, the tapirs appear to inform the Dreamwalkers that they are inside another large dreamscape similar to the one during Halloween. This time, however, an entity called "The Grinch" had suddenly appeared and attacked it, stealing all the presents and leaving everything to ruin as they see now. The tapirs point to a meter floating high in the sky, and although it's not rock bottom, it keeps wavering and lowering as time passes. The Dreamwalkers must help raise the meter to save the dreamscape from turning into a nightmare.

"But the big guy is really angry now," the tapirs chatter among themselves. "If they help fix things, maybe they'll gain a powerful ally!"

Dressed in Christmas themed attire, it will be up to the Dreamwalkers to try and restore the Christmas spirit before the day is ruined forever.

I. HELPING WHOVILLE

The town is an interesting looking place with its unique architecture, bright colors swirling and curving about that it make it look like it could be made of cake or candy instead. It's supposed to be adorned with all manner of Christmas decorations and lights, and yet all of it is missing and instead everything looks so drab and dreary, the colors faded and nary a carol sung. Its tree has also been stripped bare, the presents pilfered, and the much too big Christmas Star gone.

A. Gift Retrieval. The Grinch has scattered all of the presents and decorations throughout the surrounding forests and they need to be returned before Christmas is over. Dog sleds big enough to load up found presents are provided to be used, and the dogs will help track down presents. However, those who enter the forests should be cautious. While there aren't any huge threats, there are present mimics, monsters that pretend to be present boxes only to attack any who approach. They will also eat real presents, so be careful they don't reach the sled!

» BONUS: PRESENT DELIVERY. The last objective is to deliver the present to their rightful owners. However, it's possible the Grinch may have tampered the presents, and this will only be revealed upon opening. Players must RNG 0-5 to determine if the recipient likes the present or not.

» BONUS: SPECIAL PRESENTS. There are some special marked boxes that are guarded by present mimics. Get past them to retrieve the present. However, upon touching the box, it will disappear in a poof of orange and be replaced with a pumpkin pie that will help amplify one's dreamotion abilities if eaten.

B. Fixing Decorations. With broken ornaments and torn wreaths and ribbon everywhere, a massive cleanup is in order along with repairing and redecorating. While anyone good at crafts can help, positive emotions and dreamotion abilities will be key to help brighten everything from its current dreary atmosphere. Creative minds can help produce the necessary decorations while the athletic can figure out ways to bolster their skills to reach those high, hard to reach places. Another RNG for rating is here as the residents will judge their work.

» BONUS: JUDGMENT. Anyone can throw up decorations, but will it be to the residents' liking? Players must RNG 0-5 to determine what kind of rating their efforts receive.

» BONUS: CHRISTMAS STAR. The original Christmas star was smashed to bits so a new one is in order. Although anything can be used, the Whos do have some preferences on what can be used on the star, even if those materials may be hard to find. Rainbow crystals found in the forest will surely help give the start that glittery feeling; they prefer to have it gold; and it needs to illuminate on its own so some kind of light source is needed.

C. Christmas Carols. Carolers are doing their best, but everyone is stumbling over their verses and instruments are out of tune. A bit of positive reinforcement and Christmas cheer will help sort things out. Those who are musically inclined can lead the way by singing and even creating new songs to help inspire others.

» BONUS: A SPECIAL CHRISTMAS CAROL. In the designated thread, a new carol will be composed by the dreamwalkers. Each one will supply their own verse in response to the previous (click here for example). The thread is only for the verses, but there will be another thread where players can go ham for their characters to comment on the song as it goes on. Anyone can participate multiple times but must wait for another comment to be made first.

II. SANTA'S TOY FACTORY

Just beyond Whoville with just the Winter Forest to separate them is one of Santa's toy factories. It, too, has been attacked and smoke rises from the damaged buildings. With machines malfunctioning, toys are running rampant and everything is chaotic. If not fixed soon, there will not be enough toys for Santa to deliver.

A. Elf Rescue. The Grinch not only stole the presents and destroyed the toys, but they also sabotaged the machines running the factor. Now elves are trapped inside and are in desperate need of rescuing as toys malfunction and start to turn on them. The machines are even trying to box up the elves as gifts instead! Behaving similar to the present mimics, boxes, wrapping paper, and ribbon bounce around in search of anything to wrap up. Dreamwalkers must venture in to try to turn off the machines and rescue the elves without getting turned into a present themselves. The more elves rescued, the more allies gained to fix the factory and more favor earned from Santa.

B. Reindeer Games. The reindeer have been scattered all over and the only way to bring them back is to attract them with fun and games. In order to do so, dreamwalkers will transform into reindeer and will have additional abilities granted to them, such as flying and manipulating snow. As for what kind of games, they can choose from any of the following:

  • Ring Racing. High up in the air is a flying course with rings made of magical frost. Racers must pass through each ring to count, but they must fly quickly. As soon as they approach, the ring will start to contract, and if too late it will close and the racer will be disqualified.

  • Sleigh Pulling. This is a contest of strength! Sleighs will be piled high with presents and, if not enough presents are available, large rocks to weigh it down. Each reindeer must then try and pull their sleigh down a simple straight lane to the finish line. Just beware, rogue toys will appear on the track and will need to be dealt with somehow. There are no restrictions—each reindeer can use whatever ability or skill they can think of to help pull the overloaded sleigh. The contest can be 1v1 or 2v2.

  • Robot Reindeer. All the excitement does attract many of the reindeer back, but unexpected guests arrive as well—and they're not friendly. Sent by the Grinch, robotic reindeer will suddenly descend from the skies to ruin the festivities. It will be up to the dreamwalkers in their reindeer form to fight back against them—or try to convert them to help out instead.

C. Gingerbread Army. Giant gingerbread men occasionally appear and try to smash through the toy factory, hampering rescue efforts. Fortunately, they are only made of gingerbread and easy to fall apart. Unfortunately, they will not only regrow lost parts but grow from severed parts. Their weak point is the glowing gumdrop located among the many gumdrops on the body, and destroying it will destroy the gingerbread completely.

Eustace | Granblue Fantasy | Open

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2021-12-19 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Throughout his time in the dreamscape, Eustace will be a festive reindeer with the horns a bit more real than he'd like.]

⊗ i-a: gift retrieval + bonuses
[He was already willing to help retrieve the stolen presents, but when he saw they would be using dog sleds? Although his expression didn't outwardly change, there might have been a bit more snowy sparkles around him as he approached the "loading" station.

a. Greeting the dogs. Before setting off, Eustace will take the time to acquaint himself with the group of dogs he would be working with, quietly but eagerly petting them and ruffling their floofy necks. He's never actually used a dog sled before, so it would be a learning experience, but at least the dogs seem to know what they're doing. Maybe he can work on his dreamotion abilities to learn to communicate with them...! So some may find him staring intently at the group of dogs sitting around him a strange heavy silence before he finally speaks.]

...You like carrot bones?

[The dogs howl in dismay as Eustace sighs.]

This is harder than I thought...

[At least they seem to understand him?? A little??? Or maybe that's just because this is a dream...

b. Collecting gifts feat. Mimics. Once in the forest, the dogs help sniff out a few presents and soon they get a decent pile on the sled. However, every so often he'll encounter one of those mimics and once again he has to contend with the dream version of Flamek behaving oddly. In this case, shooting explosive confetti and electric stars. But he'll also try to focus and try something new, such as conjuring large shards of ice to drop onto the mimic.

And if he hears someone dealing with a mimic themselves, he'll come in to assist, firing an explosive star shot to keep it at bay.]

They're not too difficult to handle, just don't let it near the presents.

[c. BONUS: Present delivery. Eventually he'll return to town and start delivering presents, but it will surely be a hit or miss situation. But how they like the gift is not something he can control and he's just more focused on getting the presents delivered to where they belong.

The other bonus: special present option can be done as well for any who are interested!]

⊗ i-b: fixing decorations + bonus christmas star
[When not collecting presents, Eustace will try to help put up a few decorations. Currently he's mainly working to get the lights working again, channeling electricity and creating a few sparks to insert into lamps. His calm, steadfast nature also helps in reinforcing fragile items once repaired.]

Here, I've fixed these star lights so they shouldn't go out again. Where should they go?

[As for the Christmas Star, he'll be more than happy to take the dog sleds out again to gather the rainbow crystals. Otherwise, he'll try to help light it up. However, it is a large star, so...]

Careful, I don't want to accidentally shock you so don't stand too close.

⊗ ii-a: elf rescue
[With toys and games left behind in Whoville, Eustace enters mission mode as he quickly infiltrates the toy factory. Rather than deal with the machines directly, he'll be carefully sneaking past and focus on getting the elves out, guiding any through windows and blown open entrances. However, there are occasions when he has to switch to combat, shooting through aggressive toys and even gingerbread if they made it this far.

When not taking on a more active role, Eustace will find a higher perch and snipe down targets, either focusing on toys or completely destroying malfunctioning machines. Although fixing them would be better, time is of the essence and some machines are clearly beyond repair, so he will only target those that would need to be replaced or a high threat. Otherwise, he'll try and cover those who are trying to fix things.]

⊗ ii-b: reindeer games
[Although a bit begrudgingly, as he's found himself with the antlers, it only seems right that he continue to play the role of "reindeer" and try this whole transformation thing out. With a darker than average coat and grayish white antlers and mane, he's a bit uncoordinated at first, the weight of the antlers on his head as well as now on four legs making him look more like a newborn fawn than an adult stag. So if he accidentally bumps into anyone—]

—Sorry. Still...getting used to this.

[Although his apology is genuine, it's also a bit of a grumbling mutter because of how awkward this. Also why do his damn antlers itch?? He felt it occasionally before, but now it's worse. So son't mind him if he goes to find a tree and rub his antlers against them because this is very aggravating.

However, once he's gotten used to things, he'll be trying his hand, er hoof, at everything: racing, sleigh pulling, and even dealing with the robot reindeer.]

[ It's hard not to smile, even though the adrenaline is still coursing through her body. She does let out a breath at the reprieve, though she doesn't know how long it will last, for now. Looking over what was left of the mimics, at least they were able to protect the sleigh. ]

Rather a lot out of nowhere, I'd say. But I'm alright. [ She looks him over, as if to make judgement on whether or not she needs to return the question. She's still glancing to the side, trying to stay alert like him, but eventually she just shrugs. Somewhat sarcastically, she adds: ] Happy Christmas to us.

[a: arrival into the dreamscape]

[When the announcement came across all of them that they would yet again be falling into another dreamy dreamscape Sora had no idea that would be quite literally how Sora would arrive in this winter wonderland. One moment Sora is about to drift off into a sleepy dream and the next he finds himself falling. The sharp snap of winter wind on his cheeks and the sound of broken Christmas bells in the distance as he falls and falls.]

Ahhh?!

[Soon crashing down into a snowdrift larger than a house. Whump!! Ice and powder fly everywhere as Sora practically vanishes into the pile of cold snow. It will take him a moment of aggravated yelping before he suddenly pops his head out of the snow and gasps dramatically.]

Ahhh! Where's a flying reindeer when you need one?!

[A low and behold here they are in a world that looks like another one Sora has been to before. A Christmas-like town but not exactly like the one Sora knows (why is everything so dreary-looking?). And just like last time, Sora seems to be in a rather appropriately festive outfit. A black and white and very fuzzy Santa costume with a Santa hat to match.

He'll struggle to get out of the snow and might need a hand or two to tug him out.]

Where are we? Are we really in Christmastown?

[b: gift retrieval]

[Once the task is put into their hands Sora goes right for Santa's workshop the Toy Factory. The place is absolutely trashed but there is some hope in Sora's heart that the real Santa is there and able to give them some insight into this Christmas dream. But all he finds are broken toys and equipment. He has to help! And he can't just leave all those gifts stolen either...!

The first thing that Sora hops to is trying to gather up the gifts that have been scatted about! There is a dog sled nearby to help him haul them away. But Sora runs into a bit of a conundrum. There is a large broken-looking conveyor belt that Sora only assumes was used to move gifts. And the machine is spitting out boxes here and there that Sora has to retrieve.]

Wow, I think I've seen something like this before. Come on! Give me those gifts!

[But it won't be that easy! The machine spits out those present mimics that open their jaws and attack when they get flung at him! Without a keyblade in a dreamscape, he'll have to do something else to fight them off! One comes flying at him and Sora grabs it by the face (?) and holds it at arm's length with a struggle!]

Ack!! Stop biting!!

[c: fixing decorations]

[Luckily Sora seems to get a break from all the action when he finds some time to help with fixing the Christmas decorations. Sora is busy in the center of the Christmas town helping fix up the rather scarce-looking Christmas tree. This poor sad excuse for a tree really won't do...]

I think it needs about a million more Christmas ornaments. Maybe something to help the branches look more... uh... branch-y?

[The name of the game is dreamotion, right? Sora looks at his mittens and thinks of how he can green up the tree and give it a little life and colour. Some sparks of green, red and white appear. Soon the magic starts to twinkle and crackle like Christmas firecrackers.]

I'll give it a shot!

[network: santa is real]

does everybody know who Santa is? did you know that Santa is able to cross the entire universe to deliver gifts to kids all over? i know this is supposed to be a dream but I feel like we've gotta do our best to help everything get back into order! we've gotta help him out! wherever or whatever world he's in!

i was wondering! you've all heard of santa, right? he's real! no matter what anyone else tells you! you just wait! let's do our best!

[That's right- Sora believes that Santa is real!]

...I ruined your surprise.

[Her shoulders sank and she felt that foreign, hot prickling up her arms. Shame's not entirely a stranger to her, but it was exceedingly rare. Not one to let out all the warm air, she popped inside and shut the door.]

Sweetheart, I'm so sorry. I really should have waited, but...

["I wanted to see you" was the truth, but she needed to act less like a busybody. But she tutted and opted for humor.]

Damn. Of all the things I could have used an omen for, you know...?

[But he brought a little box. She reached out to accept it.]

If- if it's any consolation, I'm still very surprised!

[Shaking his head in return.]

No, it's fine. It's the thought that matters. The omen would have probably given away the surprise as well, though.

[He'll follow up with his own joke, chuckling lightly.]

If anything, I need to apologize in advance. I'm not sure if it'll be any good. I've been trying to practice, but I'm afraid Sharlayan isn't exactly known for "tasty food". I generally ate cheap.

[Once there was no sound of disturbance nearby? Well, that was a clawed hand rested lightly against Susato's shoulder for a brief sort of squeeze.]

Good to hear. [No worse for wear, other than a bit of snow stuck to his clothing and hair. Along with the fur of his tail and ears, ducking down then to check on the dogs attached to the sleigh who had, perhaps surprisingly, kept calm and in place during the entire bit.

A hand moved under a dog's head to check them over, watching tails wag as a few others close by sniffed at him.]

Some Christmas alright. Shame I was hoping for something more quiet. [And let it pass by.]

Nobody should apologize for trying something new. But I'm morbidly curious as to what you mean by all of that last bit. What in the world did Sharlayans eat?

[Cheap meant quick and convenient typically. Or it meant that G'raha may have eaten toast some days or dehydrated noodles on others. Madhuri wasn't prepared for that heart attack, but if she had to march into Old Sharlayan and descend upon their culinary world like an angered kami, she would.

She went to hang up her gloves and coat before turning with the little box clasped to her chest. For safe keeping, she placed it on the table. She was terribly curious but the anticipation would make unveiling it all the more fantabulous.]

Pfft. Wildlife. She took down full-grown marlboros before her tenth summer.]

It would be a good dreamotion practice opportunity as well. I've managed to make flowers so far, but nothing material. What about you?

I would love the help if you're willing.

[It was meant to be a surprise for her, but he doesn't mind cooking together as well. Mayhap then the food won't taste too bad?]

Ah, well... In Sharlayan, nutrition is -- above all else -- more important than taste, so the food there is generally pretty bland tasting. Archon bread in particular is popular there, but the taste does leave something to be desired. There is one location that focuses more on the taste of food over nutrition called "The Last Stand", but I haven't had the pleasure to try anything from it yet.

...Me, too. But here we are in this "Whoville."

[ The hand is a comfort, funnily enough. Susato visibly relaxes under its touch, and even when he lets go, she follows him to check on the dogs, too. When one of them sniffs her hand, she allows it, and scratches him behind the ears once he's satisfied. Sweet dogs.

Maybe it's not all bad here. ]

Do you suppose there are even more of those fake presents out there?

[ Do they protect the sleigh (read: dogs) or look for more mimics...? She looks up at their meter thing overhead, and she can't help thinking she'd rather get this over with... ]

No wonder you opted for cheap! Get your daily recommended values, go back into those studies... you poor thing.

[She kept some extra string at hand in case some mistletoe fell. One can help tie off the braid before she made tracks for the kitchen to wash up. She could see a sauce going, and something was working away in this pot here.]

Well, my resolve for the Tsagaan Sar - my people's new year, as it were - was to engage in better meal planning. Seeing as you and sweet Alisaie are both from Sharlayan practically starving with bored tummies, I'll take that as my own self-made omen.

[ Though the conveyor belt is clearly broken, Susato finds herself fascinated with the machinery. How fast does it travel? How much weight could it carry? Could she put it back together? But unfortunately, now is not the time to think about such things.

When she sees the present mimic giving Sora trouble, she forms her fingers into an L-shaped gun and "fires" it at the mimic, resulting in a literal fire ball that burns it from its ribbons all the way to its mouth. Bang.

It's a good thing she's a little more practiced with that whole dreamotion thing this time around! She may be wearing something ridiculous yet again, but she's ready to get the holiday cheer thing over with. Plus, at least she's still wearing her boots. ]

It became something of a force of habit. [To get back into studies quicker as she said. Chuckling lightly to her response.] The both of us have been away from home for far too long; me much longer than her. I've been spared thus far at least. However, I will happily accept anything you make me.

[Aside from just being delicious, it's something she made for him after all.]

[While Eustace takes a high point, he may spot a familiar figure on the ground floor of the factory, fending off the aggressive toys that have taken control of the place. Infiltration probably isn't made much easier by the bells that adorn her very real horns that, no matter how hard she tries, she can't shed herself from them. Or maybe it's a blessing in disguise... because as she's almost trampled by an army of large teddy bears that only absorb every punch or kick she tries to throw at them, as well as ribbons that slither across the floor like snakes after her, the jingling of those bells echoes out loud through the factory, drawing in more enemies.

I need to have words with any parties responsible for this "nutrition over flavor" decision. I can understand not bogging down the body of rather sedentary folk with extra calories, but there certainly must be studies in those books somewhere that talk of the connection of dull food with depression!

It's... it's...! Good food makes people happy! I just can't help but think of all those people out there, considering sustenance such a hassle their whole lives.

[That was definitely a fired-up whipping in the end of her tail as she stirred the pot and then helped herself to a taste. But it all stopped when she savored. Then she reached for the salt to kick it up some. The xaela pointed to the contents and looked over her shoulder his way.]

I should say so. This was a good choice, and you can do so many things with this sort of soup base. A touch of lime, and you have a cold cure.

[But this was ready after just a few minutes on the heat. She gave the sauce a nudge.]

So this is going onto the main event once it's finished roasting in there?

[She hunkered down into a crouch to peek through the little window. This was ready perhaps fifteen minutes ago, but she'd had her fair share of dry roasts before.]

It looks good, and eager to come out. You were awfully ambitious.

[Although he could see the toys gathering in a particular place, the sound of those bells are hard to miss, especially with his keen hearing. Turning toward the location, he catches sight of the scuffle and can only make out the antlers with how many are surrounding them. Eyes narrowed in complete focus, he lifts Flamek and stares down the barrel, aiming for just outside of the center so as not to risk catching whoever's down there in his shots.

Given the number, he concentrates and fires several rounds of "shooting stars," the stars buzzing with electricity before they explode and crackle in the air, bolts of lightning arcing and spreading to hit several in a decent sized area. Confetti follows after, also bursting in mid-air to pelt down on more of the toys. It's enough to make the concentrated mob start to scatter as he continues to fire more shots, aiming primarily to disperse while taking out as many as he can to help ease off the pressure for the one below.]

[Shuzo is dressed for the occasion. The moment he noticed that Christmas was on the table, he got READY.]

I. HELPING WHOVILLE!

Fixing Decorations

[Shuzo decided he was going to help with the decorations the moment he saw them broken! TIME TO PUT GLITTER ON EVERYTHING!]

You! Yes you! Come help me, I don't know how to make these ornaments look better!

[They're mostly all green and sparkly, someone tell this myumon that there are more colours in rainbows.]

The Whos seem to like some of them! Come on, help me!

[The Whoville residents do seem to like the decorations, picking some up and smiling! Seems a like a four out five!]

Christmas Carols!

[This is actually something Shuzo is very into, he wants to help the Whoville residents as much as possible, so he's going around, talking to them, trying to fix as many instruments, running as many instruments, as his own body allows.

When he has any instrument tuned and ready to be played, he'll turn to the closest person he sees that doesn't seem to be a Whoville resident, and smile.]

Shall we sing? I can lead!

II. SANTA'S TOY FACTORY

Elf Rescue

[So... He's a musician, not a hero. But he can't stand the sad faces of the residents of Whoville, who only want their Christmas to be magical and perfect! So, leaving the instruments behind, Shuzo makes his way to the factory, and looking around tells him what he needs to know: He needs to help find the elves that got trapped!

He grabs a stick from a nearby tree (sorry tree!) and pokes the door with it. So far, so good.

Looking around, he spots someone and waves at them with his stick-free hand.]

Hey~! Come help me!
