Taste the difference between a sweet one and a nightmare. The process can be pleasant or it can bring terror depending upon the means Xiao employs. However to be trapped within a dream itself is new. The creature that speaks to him has Xiao's attention for only so long as he surmises that it can't offer a means to return to a waking state.
Then he walks away, journal in hand. If the tapir can't help him wake so that he may continue to abide by his contractual obligations, then the Conqueror of Demons must find his own way. It is as simple as that, even if it isn't simple at all.
When he has walked some distance away, Xiao looks over the journal that he has been gifted. A means of communication. This... He does not need something like this. Xiao prefers solitude it's safer for other people to not be around him so he sees little purpose in carrying the journal around. ]

[ Xiao himself is not someone that allows for many emotions to take hold of his heart. He has often been described as aloof and standoffish. His demeanor is abrasive and sounds hostile even when it is not. Xiao intimidates people in general, but he doesn't harbor such feelings really. Yet there is confusion and irritation. A restlessness that comes with not being able to perform his duties. Idleness is not something he can readily accept. It's going to start to manifest itself in different ways...
By perhaps starting to corrupt the area around him. Oh nothing so severe as creating a nightmare or some creature to do battle with. But perhaps the plantlife start to gain a mind of their own - grow roots that seek to trip or grap at those that pass by the tree that Xiao has taken to. Thorns that grow and block off the road or pathways.
Not that he is unaware of this occurring. No, it is much the opposite. Should someone find themselves in a bit of a bind ( maybe literally ), they'll find the youthful adeptus staring them down - before aiming to free them. ]
It would be wise to be on your way and avoid this area.

[ If anyone would ever think to call Xiao out on something, it's that he doesn't isolate himself completely. Why would someone that vows they don't like being around people hanging around a place that constantly sees trade and foot traffic? It's no different here. Though he says he doesn't want or need to be around people, Xiao has decided to at least see what the people of this dream world are up to.
What he doesn't account for is that the people would be a little more forward in their attempts to, well, approach him. Xiao certainly isn't used to that. So that's how he has ended up with an armful of these chocolate roses - confectioners insisting that he tastes them and then come back and tell them what he thinks.
