But when he breaks through another large chunk of brush and pauses to look at the pup, he catches it staring at him. Bright amber eyes, ears perked forward. It's still clearly nervous with how it trembles every now and then, but he can also see the spirit in its eyes, ready to be free.

The thought passes through his mind and he steps closer, close enough so that he can stretch out his neck and lightly nudge the pup's muzzle with his nose.]
