⨂ Eustace's Bach--er, Camping Party ⨂

Who: Eustace & all his male CR
Which: Semi-closed log, forward-dated to the weekend before the wedding (November 26-27)
Where: Out in a cosy clearing of the Wildlands
What: Eustace can't make up his goddamn mind, so he invites all the men he knows to his bachelor party. He intends for it to be a relaxed hangout, but...well. We'll see.
Warnings: Alcohol, underage drinking, ghosts, more to be added if they come up

» invitation
At some point in early November, all those named by Eustace (aka, every man Eustace has had CR with) will receive a short message from Trahearne over the journals:

Hello. If you aren't aware yet, Eustace will be getting married this winter. He has invited you and several others to join him in a pre-celebration of the occasion called a "bachelor party." This will be held on Saturday, 11/26 at a location in the Wildlands (see attached map). Please bring food and drink and anything else you will need for camping.

No need to reply. If you are unable to attend for any reason, feel free to ignore this message. If you will be coming, we will see you there.

For those who are reluctant, or want to go but can't find a good excuse, some of Eustace's dogs will appear at those characters' houses without warning to dognap them. The flower dogs can make use of vines for those who really want their characters to suffer for this party.

While any of the dogs may come to grab people, only the male dogs will stay for the party, of course. There will be 5 dogs in attendance total--4 corgis and 1 flower dog.

» campgrounds
In the weeks beforehand, Trahearne and Beat went and scouted out a suitable little place for the shindig: A clearing in the woods flanked by a small cabin. The cabin sits nestled among the trees at the edge of the clearing. The clearing itself is sizeable--there's a place for chopping firewood, a ring of stones in the middle suggesting its use as a bonfire spot, and a grill built into the ground nearer the cabin.

The ground here is soft, but not muddy--perfectly suitable to sleep on. Beat and Trahearne made sure to clear away excess leaves from the ground to make things more comfortable.

The woods around the clearing are not thick, but they are still wilderness. There is abundant, if mundane flora to be found, and smaller critters that happily scamper around in the daylight. Who knows what lurks beyond in the nighttime... Better keep those fires going to keep the bad things away.

» cabin
The small cabin at the edge of the clearing is just that--small. It is comprised of only two rooms. The front room is a sitting room with a small kitchen, kept warm by a wood stove. Visitors to the cabin are free to make themselves comfortable in front of the fire on the couch big enough for three, or the large sitting chair by the window. The dining table only seats two, and it sits snug against the back of the couch.

The back room is home to the bedroom. Here, the visitors will find two bunk beds--enough sleeping room for four (or more if you wanna share i'm not judging). All the beds are made and equipped with soft, clean blankets and pillows. It seems whoever was here first was anticipating the party.

There is also another door in the bedroom, which leads to a closet. The particularly nosy will find all sorts of things useful for a cabin stay inside: extra pillows, blankets, tools for maintenance, an extra grill... You name it! Within reason!

On the outside, there is a stockpile of wood for the wood stove, and an outhouse. Just the one.

» nighttime
This is an overnight party, by the way. And when night falls, that's when the real fun begins.

As mentioned before, there is more than enough space in the clearing to create a big bonfire. But be careful--it's dry and windy. Take care not to unwittingly set any of the trees on fire. The ground is comfortable enough to sleep on (especially for those seasoned travelers), but for those who don't want to rough it completely, there are tents and sleeping bags.

The cabin is for those who don't like or can't sleep outside. It is comfortable and warm, yes, especially with all those others in the same room... But there's a catch. It's haunted. The ghost that inhabits the cabin isn't malicious, thankfully. It's friendly, in fact. Perhaps a little too friendly. Those sleeping in the cabin may find themselves poked and prodded into awakening at odd hours. Besides that, it's harmless. Promise.

Treat this as a mingle log! The setting description above is just the stage--feel free to come up with games, have your characters bring things to add to the mix, play around with the things mentioned above. It can be as chill...or not as chill as you want.

Eustace

[GENERAL BUG EUSTACE THREAD HERE.

He'll just be chilling, sometimes helping grill things, playing with the dogs—basically just being his usual quiet self. He will also be camping out in the open. Tent, psh, he doesn't need it. Just his sleeping bag and his dogs...and Flamek within reach. Can never be too careful after all. Someone may need to tell him to go sleep later because old habits die hard and he would definitely stay up on watch duty.]

Campgrounds
[76 had already pulled himself up a log to sit on, stocking up the fire as two wolves sat just on either side of him. One of which a bit prickly in appearance with colorful petals, and the other having more lavender blooms with how much the pup had grown into a young wolf over he months. The other flower wolves were likely off somewhere with Blue, which was honestly fine; these were the only boys of the small pack.

They were watching others move about curiously, but not so much budging from their chosen spots.]

They don't bite. [Spoken to any caught looking their way passing by for this camping out bachelor party.]

Strong Drink
[He pulled a quart jar out of the leather backpack brought with him later into the day, sat right back by the fire, and poured the glittering galaxy-like liquid into a glass; also from said backpack. It smelled sweet, but also of strong alcohol as he let it swirl in the glass after a good pour. Faceguard of his mask was of, showing off a well trimmed beard, visor still hiding his eyes so he could take a sip.

There was that low hiss, a satisfied noise at the burn-]

If you want some, just as. Brought enough.

[Thought, admittedly, a few jars of the weaker stuff with the stronger held back mostly for himself. All the better to watch how others went about this.]

Cards
[After a few drinks perhaps, or even before, he'd managed to get up a table and was shuffling a deck of playing cards in bared and blackened hands. Claws not getting in the way of how smoothly they flowed in how he went about it.

Leaning back in a chair slightly, even.]

Know any card games?

Hm, I thought things seemed rowdy here but you're actually behaving yourself.

Do you need more food at the party? I'll bring something because it seems rude to come without a gift.

Sorry for being so curious. Look, I just thought something might be strange.

Can you blame me? A bunch of dogs came out of no where.

Invitation
It's been a literal century since Alastor was last invited to a wedding much less a bachelor party. Alastor was literally buzzing with excitement as he picked up his pen to send back an RSVP.

I would be utterly delighted to attend! Thank you for the invitation!

Does everything need to be fully-cooked beforehand or will we be able to make use of a cookfire to add the finishing touches? Also, what's the earliest you're expecting arrivals?

It wouldn't do to show up too early when the host wasn't ready!

Campgrounds - Arrival
When Trahearne had said to "bring food", he really should've specified how much.

Alastor arrived carrying a giant cast iron pot of gumbo that he'd had simmering overnight and up until he left the treehouse. As if that wasn't enough, he had a couple of little shadows carrying a large basket crammed full of cornbread and buttermilk biscuits, another one stuffed with beignets, and a third (mercifully smaller) basket with a few bottles of whiskey, gin, and brandy that he'd picked up in town.

"Hope I'm not too early!" Alastor chirped, some bouncy big band jazz accompanying the spring in his step.

Campgrounds - Let the Good Times Roll!
One of the upsides (and downsides) of being connected to the radio waves was that if it was played on the radio, it was typically added to the massive music library in Alastor's head. And given Alastor didn't need batteries, that meant he could act as the party's walking, talking jukebox.

Though he will judge you on your tastes. Also, for the safety of everyone, "The Macarena" is on the ban list.

Nighttime - Around the Bonfire
Alastor had practiced moderation during the day because of a rather embarrassing weakness Angel had learned about on his arrival:

The terrible Radio Demon was a lightweight.

However, when the sun went down and the moon and the bonfire provided the only source of light, well, good enough reason to knock back a couple of drinks. He was drinking straight from one of the whiskey bottles he'd brought. He was certainly rather mellow if a bit giggly right now.

Nighttime - Music in the Dark
Alastor didn't really sleep much though the alcohol in his system made it tempting to lie back and sleep. However, he sat off to one side, taking a quiet moment to look up at the moon and stars.

Without thinking, he started humming to himself. One of his private little experiments with styles other than jazz that he played for no one. He kept it quiet, but if someone came close enough, they'd likely hear it.

[Alastor is intrigued by what was just poured into the glass.]

Somehow I doubt calling that "moonshine" would be appropriate.

[personal profile] steadypulse 2022-11-10 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
It's what I've been calling it, since- well. Moonshining is what's created it.

[He tipped the jar a bit, causing the liquid to swirl, but the colors remained distinct in that galaxy-like appearance. Sparkling away as if that was just what the jar contained.

76 Hummed-]
Made a hobby of it here.

Didn't expect to find any moonshiners here. [He watches the strange brew glitter, fascinated.] Tried a bit of ages ago but never seen anything quite like what you've cooked up. Would it be all right if I had a taste?
lonelysmiles: (Hmmm)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-11-10 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Alastor tilts his head curiously before understanding dawns.]

Ah, I see. I suppose it is the norm for more modern generations to live together prior to marriage. Still, I've heard it's supposed to be profoundly bad luck for the groom to see the bride before the wedding.
steadypulse: (That'd be nice)

[personal profile] steadypulse 2022-11-10 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Got a nice little distillery tucked way out of the way. Use honey as part of the main mix, along with dried corn since it's easy to keep.

[76 was taking out a second glass as he spoke, pouring a bit into it and offering that out for Alastor to take if he so pleased-] Go ahead. Has a taste of blackberry mixed with raspberry to it, and has a hell of a kick so I'd sip it gently.

[He meant it, too. Was strong- even this that he'd watered down with a bit more juice. Wasn't aiming to give anyone alcohol poisoning after all, so he'd mostly brought a sampling of the safe batches.

With another slow sip from his own glass-]
The honey I've been using is what causes the look, and I've grown fond of it.
lonelysmiles: Wait for it... (Keep A Straight Face)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-11-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So I take it your recipe takes at least some inspiration from mead?

[The corn doesn't surprise him. There was plenty of whiskey made from corn after all.]

Thank you, sir! [Alastor takes the glass and swirls it under his nose to get a sample of the smell first. (Liquor should be appreciated fully!) Certainly smells strong. Blackberries and raspberries tend to be on the tart side of sweet, so at least he didn't need to worry about basically drinking syrup.]

I assume the bees that provide it are one of the fantastical twists on Earth's animals that is typical of this place.

[He takes a sip and nearly chokes yet still manages to keep his smile and swallow it down.]

Yes, that is most certainly moonshine! [A polite cough to try clearing his throat.] Though far more pleasant than the rotgut deserving of the name I had back in '27!

I believe that's only for the night before or day of. But we're not really so...

...

[It's clear that Eustace was just going to be dismissive about it. But then he considers where they are.

He then considers his own rotten luck in this place.

...

[No. He is not. Groooan.]

What other common superstitions are there?

[Normally this would be a stupid question for him to ask—but he's looking at Alastor with dead seriousness. He needs to take all the precautions.]
lonelysmiles: (Bemused)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-11-11 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You're asking a life- and afterlife-long bachelor about wedding superstitions. Give me a moment.

[This isn't as easy as rifling through his vast music library or his repertoire of recipes.]

For the bride, it's good luck to have something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue incorporated into her attire. Though there's another line about a sixpence in her shoe, but American money doesn't have that so it's generally dropped where I'm from.

[His eyes narrow a bit in concentration.]

It's bad luck to get married in a church near an uncovered, open grave.

[And his ears momentarily flatten down.]

And apparently if one catches the bouquet or garter when either is thrown, they will be the next to get married.

[And, good Lord, he'd made tracks the moment that tradition had reared its ugly head at the last wedding he'd been invited to.]

[ Phantom is not unused to camping outdoors. After all, he worked many years as a freelance assassin. What bothers him more is that there are other people around, far more than he is usually accustomed to. He pitches his tent at the very edge of the clearing, far away from the noise and the fire... but he doesn't seem like he'll sleep just yet, even after most people have settled down.

Instead, he appears by Eustace's tent, making sure to walk over visibly instead of using his stealth to vanish and startle him. Phantom is nocturnal and doesn't sleep much, so he doesn't look tired at all. ]

[Is that his journal in his hand? Yes. Yes it is. He is taking notes. His brows does furrow at hearing "American money" but he can only assume it's a currency in Alastor's world. Church near an uncovered open grave...

...

WELL the Corgi Tree is isn't a church and there's only one well kept grave in the back there so should be fine??? Should be fine.

At the last bit, he just speaks without looking up.]

It'll just be the bouquet.

[Like hell he'd let anyone touch any piece of Tifa's wardrobe especially a fairly private piece and ESPECIALLY any other man—]
