STROKE OF MIDNIGHT
Although the Masquerade is being held on the night of the Fourteenth, some new problems arise in the days after. This log is split into two sections, the Masquerade and Around Town. Everyone is free to participate in either or both, whichever catches your interest.
More details on everything can be found here and here. As a reminder, events double as our TDMs and information can be found here with arrival details here. Any outside characters participating in the log are canonly logged as appearing in Songerein in February and will remain in Songerein from the IC date of February 14 through 28. TDM only characters can only thread within this log. Anyone who apps in and is accepted will have their character count February as their first time in the game without any disruption, so all content will carry over. Those who do not apply will disappear which should not seem too unusual, however players in game can choose to retcon and pretend a character was never there to begin with if it would be easier; or even think their presence was just a dream.
IMPORTANT! All outside characters MUST have "TDM" in their subject line, even if you might not app. This will help people differentiate those who are already in the game and those who are not.
TDM threads are required for samples. Refer to the Game Info for general information and feel free to toss any questions here. Reserves will open Wednesday, February 22nd and Applications will open on March 1. Our next cycle after won't be until JULY.

I. MASQUERADE

It's time for the masquerade and the carriages will start arriving before sunset. Upon arrival, everyone who leaves the carriage (or mercilessly spat out if they try to resist) will be greeted by fairy godmothers with an eye for the most dramatic and extravagant fashion. It's a masquerade, after all! For those who already arrive with their outfits, the fairy godmothers may add a little embellishment here and or just change it completely if they think it could look better. For those who did not, they will create a whole new outfit that would fit the wearer perfectly—with magic of course. They will also create the masks and half of the glass slipper brooch that everyone will wear. The masks are enchanted so that regardless of obvious personality or physical traits, they are somehow unrecognizable at first. While it is possible to figure it out through interaction, or if it's someone they already know well, it's more likely they need to reveal their identity first. These outfits can be kept even after the masquerade is over.
A. Get in the Carriage. As the pegasus drawn carriages begin to arrive to transport those who have decided to attend the masquerade, there is some commotion from others. The pair of coach mice—who are only about four feet tall—can be found smiling and cheerily squeaking about the masquerade as they grab and literally throw protesting individuals into the carriage, whereupon the door will immediately shut behind them. Ho ho ho, it'll be such a grand time! Will anyone try to help the poor soul? Or perhaps help the mice? Maybe you're a struggling victim instead. Should anyone want to try and drive the carriage, they might have a chance…but good luck having the pegasi listen to them. Eventually the carriage will land and take them to the front of the castle where the masquerade is hosted.

D. Royal Banquet. There are numerous tables one can use and be served an assortment of foods. In fact, one could make special requests and somehow the dragons serving will be able to make it, or at least as close as possible. One just has to imprint the idea of the dish onto a special card that the chefs will use to recreate it. There are also two bowls filled with special tear drop chocolates, one with only white, pink, and red, and the other filled with the other colors. The "game" is to randomly choose one from each bowl and share a kiss depending on what is picked.

- Extravagant mazes that one could easily get lost in are common, but what's special about these gardens is that the flowers will emit a soft, sweet scent that will feel as if they are walking through a dream. In fact, the section they are going through will begin to change to look like a place from their world and must now find their way out. When this change happens, only those who are in the area will be affected and no one else can enter the area until the main person affected gets out. Those inside can help, and there are no threats—it's all in simple fun…unless the place evokes certain memories and emotions for the person. Might not be as fun for them, then.
- A crystal greenhouse where the temperature is perfectly warm (or cold!) and houses various different flowers. Here some may recognize flowers from their world, the scents also creating nostalgia. There are instructions left that indicate anyone can try to help grow the flowers. The key ingredient will be dreamotion energy, and should they succeed in creating a blossom, a small marble containing a symbol of their home. There are also special daisies that can be used to play the "they love me they love me not" game. If the last petal is "they love me," then become extra flirty and clingy. If it's "love me not," they become angry, jealous, and possessive. The effects only last for a short time…unless they keep plucking flowers.
- The white fountain in the center of the gardens will have a bit of a musical playful side. It will splash colorful water at any who pass by, chime-like notes playing out as it does. But if one were to drop a flower that has absorbed positive dreamotion into its water, it will calm and let people sit to look and relax. There is also a strange frog wearing a crown that claims to be a prince. For those who believe its words that a kiss will free him from the curse, they will be sorely disappointed as nothing happens and the frog just laughs and hops away.
II. AROUND TOWN

- Insightful Mockingbirds. Special mockingbirds are flying around and perch on random shoulders. They have the ability to "read" a person's thoughts and repeat them out loud. Without warning. Hope there aren't any secrets because that bird is going to make it public, especially if it's an observation or thought—good or bad—about another person. Good luck shooing it away, too—it'll stick around for a while because it might enjoy sowing this bit of chaos.
- Arrow Delivery. The group from last year have decided to use their prank arrows for good and start a business in delivering special Valentine's messages via arrow. A "shot to the heart" in the less literal sense this time! While some of their archers are skilled, others are…less so. Some are hitting a bit too close to comfort or way off the mark. Some messages are going to the wrong person entirely. Help avoid, retrieve, or even deliver these messages around town.
C. Candy Kisses. A special assortment of flat bottomed, tear shaped chocolates are currently selling like hotcakes and can be found practically everywhere. Their main selling point is they come in different colors and each color has a special effect that will make the eater want to kiss the person near them in a certain way (see chart). Some people are deliberately swapping the wrappers around, so be careful!

It is not a custom of your world, either?
no subject
I've never heard of a holiday by that name, or anything that resembled all of this. What about you?
no subject
But then he volunteers: ] A day for one to give gifts, followed by a month later for the recipient to reciprocate, if they so choose. It was based off an old legend of gods, but the modern era has since commercialized it.
no subject
...I like the idea of that. An exchange of gifts, with time to think about what you'd like to offer in return. It's unusual, but in a good way.
no subject
no subject
[Such as, someone sharing their feelings with another before they were ready to do so...]
no subject
Best to determine, first, if the other reciprocates. Otherwise, as you suggest, it burdens the receiver.
[ How unpleasant. He truly should have walked away, instead of answering.
…It can be said that the youths of his Star do not treat the holiday so seriously, as it is meant to be sweet and fun, filled with love, gifts, and chocolates. ]
no subject
I won't disagree. But on the other hand, how would you know, if you didn't ask?
[She hesitates for a moment, debating, but he probably knows already. No sense in delaying the inevitable. Thus she adds, more quietly,]
Isn't that so, Somnus.
no subject
Honesty softens his tone, ]
I needed time to think, as well.
no subject
She smiles gently, without judgment.]
I thought as much. Something was compelling you, wasn't it?
[The more she looked back on it - and the longer his silence lingered after the fact - the more she suspected it wasn't entirely on the level. And then she'd had to sit back and really examine whether or not that suspicion left her feeling disappointed in the aftermath.]
no subject
However… [ Even now he struggles to determine if the arrow had been completely able to wash him over with feelings of adoration, or if there had been a deeper foundation for the effect to overtake him so easily. If he had been struck by the arrow, and someone else happened to walk by, would he have fallen so easily?
He is unsure if he is ready for any conclusion, because if it is the latter, it would be best to keep distant.
But it would be a disservice to her to leave it at that, much less brush off everything he said as an effect by a curse. ]
…Much of what I said remains true. [ He looks at her intently, an expression that the mask does not hide. ] You are an admirable woman.
no subject
"Admirable" does not equate to "attractive" or "desired", though. There's a wide gap between those when left unspoken.]
Thank you, [is her quiet answer, finally.] I admire you, as well. And what you said was... [...words. Words are hard.] ...Despite my answer at the time, it didn't make me unhappy. [Vague, but accurate.] Am I right in thinking you're... conflicted?
no subject
He recalls her saying she had been flattered, but her expression suggested anything but. If nothing else, she it seems she knows him well enough to determine that he wasn’t in the right state of mind…. That alone proves how valuable their relationship is as it stands, a friendship strong enough to see through illusions.
This world has been both cruel and kind to him, and one of those kindnesses comes in the form of having met her. He must not ruin it. ]
Have you ever fallen before, Kisara? [ His tone suggests that he’s not looking for a confirmation if she wishes not to give it, but rather, it is part of an explanation. ]
no subject
As for his question:]
I haven't, no. And I'm not especially experienced witnessing it around me. I suppose what makes me hesitate is I don't know what to look for. I don't... want to muddle things up.
[In this, it seems, they are well matched.]
no subject
Yet, with all of what she has accomplished in her world, it is curious to hear she has reservations. But exploring this is not the point of his question. ]
Then you should know that roots take to soil before ever showing their bloom.
[ In other words, it does not come from nothing. Like seeds hidden in the ground beneath one's soles, those that tend their garden may remain ignorant of the prospect of a flower beneath. Then, still shadowed by other plants-- that is, duty, legacy, or even a goal to liberate one's world from whatever threatens it-- it may remain hidden while it grows. Whether the gardener deems it a weed or otherwise, as well as what it represents, is up to them.
But if it's anything the arrow's enchantment showed him, it is that he values her company as it is.
He lets the statement stand alone for a few seconds, his expression remaining stone. ]
no subject
But as for her... as for them... she enjoyed his company, his thoughtful way of managing his words, his commanding presence. She'd enjoyed it even while he still stood as a suit of armor, but ever since he'd revealed his true form to her, she'd noticed more the nuances of his expression, the subtle shifts that accompany his tone of voice. How he'd begun to let himself be more human. And sure, it helps that his face is a handsome one. But she'd approached him before then, over and over, to spend time with him.
She'd approached him at the wedding, intending to ask him to dance. They'd bickered then, in their own way, parted unhappily, and she'd wondered if that would be the end of it. Had been grieved to tears at the thought of him finding her unworthy. He'd sought her out afterward, taking the time and care to apologize, and in the time between she'd managed to forgive him for his careless words. She'd chosen the dress she wears right now to accompany the jewelry he'd given her- not for him, but he'd nonetheless been in her thoughts. He was... rooted in her soil already. She knew that much. She only didn't know what was growing.
So, rather than worrying about what the answer is just yet, she instead offers up that same question she'd discarded months ago:]
Would you like to dance with me?
[He can refuse. Perhaps it's too presumptuous, too publicized. But if he accepts... well, maybe she'll pay more attention to how she feels when he rests his hands on her.]
no subject
Thus, Somnus raises his arm, placing it lightly across his chest. Holding her gaze, and without lowering his head, he bows towards her, holds, straightens, and then offers his hand. ]
It would be an honor.
[ Truly, he thinks. Who would ever say no? ]
no subject
You may be missing your armor before long, and I'm sorry in advance if I misstep. I'm still getting used to these heels.
[At least the music currently playing isn't too boisterous, so they can take their time a little.]
no subject
At the edge of the dancefloor, Somnus turns to face Kisara. He lifts their joined hands to the side, pointing them in the direction they will travel as they dance. The preemptive apology is clear, but he has no intention of having it be necessary at all. ]
Allow me to lead, [ His reply is low in pitch as if seeking permission, and with that same cadence, he speaks again almost as giving a promise: ] and I shan't let you stumble.
[ He lifts his other hand to her upper back, where for a moment his fingers twitch against her skin.
...Her dress is backless. Of course it is. He knew this.He knew this. ]
no subject
She shifts into the dance position, edging closer and more into his personal space than she would normally stand, the proximity making all the more evident their new height difference. As a suit of armour he'd loomed tall over everyone, but as a human - ghostly or not - he's closer to her own height. Now not only are his features more prominent, but they are ever closer to her own face. Impossible not to stop herself from turning a little pink at the realization.
She feels his fingers on her back, and both the contact and subsequent twitch makes her blink in surprise. Leaving her back exposed is so second nature to her by now that she hadn't considered the mechanics of it- people don't generally touch her there, after all. Meanwhile, a dance sort of requires it. She feels a slight shiver go up her spine, almost anticipatory. His fingers are cool to the touch, but it isn't an unpleasant point of contact.
She glances up at him, gauging his expression.]
I'm in your hands, then.
[Literally and figuratively, it seems. Hopefully he's alright. (Hopefully she's alright.)]
no subject
Meanwhile, his hand remains upon her back, unmoving from its spot, respectful, while allowing some space between them in case she needs to look at her feet.
Somnus leads her across the first set of measures, then the next as the beats repeat; overall, a simple pattern to follow for beginners, but with room for improvisation for those more advanced. ] Do you see the pattern?
no subject
I can see it. It's not complicated... I can keep going.
[The longer they dance, the more she'll watch the latter instead of the former, until she's able to keep her eyes on him without looking down. He looks so calm, practically unreadable. Rather than gawking at her own feet, she wants to watch his expression, to see if he's able to drop that mask of his. The mask beneath the mask, that is.]
no subject
And rather than seriousness shading his brow with intense thought, instead his mien appears lifted. ]
There is a turn. [ As the tempo builds, he turns his head slightly, dipping his head forward, closer to her ear to speak above the music. The earring she wears sways, nearly catching at his chin. ] A spin, on your part.
[ He draws back to measure her expression. They needn’t try, if she doesn’t wish, but as if in preparation, his touch between her shoulder blades becomes a mere dust of his fingertips, ready to allow her to spin.
She may have seen the step before, one in which the dancer steps out with their right foot and spins to show off the trail of their gown (or wings, given their company), only to come reeling back to their partner’s arms. ]
no subject
She closes her eyes, reversing the turn, trusting her instincts and his guiding hand to pull her in again, and just like that, she's back in his arms. Face flushed, she looks up at him, and her eyes are bright, her smile broadening. She did it.]
I've never done that before, [she says, a laugh in her voice.]
no subject
But she does more than that. She's smiling, her voice carries as breathless laugh, her eyes are bright with joy as if he had somehow given her something, when she could have done this with anyone else with the same results. She returns to his arms, and his palm happens to catch her in a position slightly lower than it once was, the small of her back.
His tone is distant. ] Perhaps you will be the first to fly in this dance. [ Because when her fingers had slipped from his from the spin, it had almost seemed she had been about to float away from him. Or maybe it was his imagination.
It doesn't matter.
Without missing a beat, he brings them into the next steps, following the pattern of the other dancers. ]
