STROKE OF MIDNIGHT

Although the Masquerade is being held on the night of the Fourteenth, some new problems arise in the days after. This log is split into two sections, the Masquerade and Around Town. Everyone is free to participate in either or both, whichever catches your interest.

More details on everything can be found here and here. As a reminder, events double as our TDMs and information can be found here with arrival details here. Any outside characters participating in the log are canonly logged as appearing in Songerein in February and will remain in Songerein from the IC date of February 14 through 28. TDM only characters can only thread within this log. Anyone who apps in and is accepted will have their character count February as their first time in the game without any disruption, so all content will carry over. Those who do not apply will disappear which should not seem too unusual, however players in game can choose to retcon and pretend a character was never there to begin with if it would be easier; or even think their presence was just a dream.

IMPORTANT! All outside characters MUST have "TDM" in their subject line, even if you might not app. This will help people differentiate those who are already in the game and those who are not.

TDM threads are required for samples. Refer to the Game Info for general information and feel free to toss any questions here. Reserves will open Wednesday, February 22nd and Applications will open on March 1. Our next cycle after won't be until JULY.

I. MASQUERADE

It's time for the masquerade and the carriages will start arriving before sunset. Upon arrival, everyone who leaves the carriage (or mercilessly spat out if they try to resist) will be greeted by fairy godmothers with an eye for the most dramatic and extravagant fashion. It's a masquerade, after all! For those who already arrive with their outfits, the fairy godmothers may add a little embellishment here and or just change it completely if they think it could look better. For those who did not, they will create a whole new outfit that would fit the wearer perfectly—with magic of course. They will also create the masks and half of the glass slipper brooch that everyone will wear. The masks are enchanted so that regardless of obvious personality or physical traits, they are somehow unrecognizable at first. While it is possible to figure it out through interaction, or if it's someone they already know well, it's more likely they need to reveal their identity first. These outfits can be kept even after the masquerade is over.

A. Get in the Carriage. As the pegasus drawn carriages begin to arrive to transport those who have decided to attend the masquerade, there is some commotion from others. The pair of coach mice—who are only about four feet tall—can be found smiling and cheerily squeaking about the masquerade as they grab and literally throw protesting individuals into the carriage, whereupon the door will immediately shut behind them. Ho ho ho, it'll be such a grand time! Will anyone try to help the poor soul? Or perhaps help the mice? Maybe you're a struggling victim instead. Should anyone want to try and drive the carriage, they might have a chance…but good luck having the pegasi listen to them. Eventually the carriage will land and take them to the front of the castle where the masquerade is hosted.

B. Half of a Pair. Near the entrance, everyone is encouraged to pull out one or more of the shoe brooches contained in a large bowl. The rules are simple: 1) use the brooch to lead them to the person wearing the other half; 2) spend whatever time or activity with them, be it general socializing, a dance, a walk in the gardens; 3) keep the brooch or return it to a designated "Used" bowl. The brooches will absorb whatever kind of dreamotion energy is formed between the two, and the stronger it is, the brighter (if positive) or darker (if negative) it will glow. The interaction can be romantic, platonic, or hostile. For those who do happen to "click" and wish for some privacy, there are numerous terraces and balconies available. Some are public, but there are quite a few with curtains, so be sure to close them to signal the balcony is occupied!

C. Dancing in the Air. The main draw will be the dance floor, and the ballroom is wide and spacious to accommodate numerous pairs to dance to their hearts' content—the music is played by enchanted instruments so they'll keep going without much of a break! Of course, what makes this dance floor truly special is how it uses dreamotion energy to lift everyone up—literally. Pairs who are having a fun time may find themselves floating up and dancing in the air instead of on the ground. Somehow they can maintain some balance…but it's just as easy to lose it.

D. Royal Banquet. There are numerous tables one can use and be served an assortment of foods. In fact, one could make special requests and somehow the dragons serving will be able to make it, or at least as close as possible. One just has to imprint the idea of the dish onto a special card that the chefs will use to recreate it. There are also two bowls filled with special tear drop chocolates, one with only white, pink, and red, and the other filled with the other colors. The "game" is to randomly choose one from each bowl and share a kiss depending on what is picked.

E. Out in the Gardens. Every castle has extravagant gardens, and this one is no different. Filled with numerous pink, red, and white flowers, the gardens have their typical fare…with not so typical effects.

Extravagant mazes that one could easily get lost in are common, but what's special about these gardens is that the flowers will emit a soft, sweet scent that will feel as if they are walking through a dream. In fact, the section they are going through will begin to change to look like a place from their world and must now find their way out. When this change happens, only those who are in the area will be affected and no one else can enter the area until the main person affected gets out. Those inside can help, and there are no threats—it's all in simple fun…unless the place evokes certain memories and emotions for the person. Might not be as fun for them, then.
A crystal greenhouse where the temperature is perfectly warm (or cold!) and houses various different flowers. Here some may recognize flowers from their world, the scents also creating nostalgia. There are instructions left that indicate anyone can try to help grow the flowers. The key ingredient will be dreamotion energy, and should they succeed in creating a blossom, a small marble containing a symbol of their home. There are also special daisies that can be used to play the "they love me they love me not" game. If the last petal is "they love me," then become extra flirty and clingy. If it's "love me not," they become angry, jealous, and possessive. The effects only last for a short time…unless they keep plucking flowers.
The white fountain in the center of the gardens will have a bit of a musical playful side. It will splash colorful water at any who pass by, chime-like notes playing out as it does. But if one were to drop a flower that has absorbed positive dreamotion into its water, it will calm and let people sit to look and relax. There is also a strange frog wearing a crown that claims to be a prince. For those who believe its words that a kiss will free him from the curse, they will be sorely disappointed as nothing happens and the frog just laughs and hops away.

II. AROUND TOWN

A. Mask Up. Attracted by the masquerade, some enchanted masks have found their way to town and are now finding their way onto people, be it by tricking their victims to be put on or just forcibly latching themselves on. Depending on the type of mask, the wearer will behave based on a festive, dramatic emotion. While wearing the mask, the dreamotion that is projected is stronger. Examples are angry emotions will cause tremors and cracks on the ground, happiness could blind people or will cause confetti to fly everywhere, while sad ones will cause clouds and drizzling rain to appear overhead. The only way to remove it is to somehow make the other person feel the opposite of whatever emotion the mask is using. Once the mask’s emotion is countered and stabilized, it could be removed or even fall off if the countering emotion is strong enough. Masks can also be captured and collected before they attach to someone.

B. Special Messages. Throughout the month, valentine's are being delivered to people all over town. Some are even receiving some from the fae and dragons who live outside… Perhaps some caution should be had from those. Regardless, while the messages are brimming with both platonic and romantic (and questionable) love, the messengers are a bit… Well they need help.

Insightful Mockingbirds. Special mockingbirds are flying around and perch on random shoulders. They have the ability to "read" a person's thoughts and repeat them out loud. Without warning. Hope there aren't any secrets because that bird is going to make it public, especially if it's an observation or thought—good or bad—about another person. Good luck shooing it away, too—it'll stick around for a while because it might enjoy sowing this bit of chaos.
Arrow Delivery. The group from last year have decided to use their prank arrows for good and start a business in delivering special Valentine's messages via arrow. A "shot to the heart" in the less literal sense this time! While some of their archers are skilled, others are…less so. Some are hitting a bit too close to comfort or way off the mark. Some messages are going to the wrong person entirely. Help avoid, retrieve, or even deliver these messages around town.

C. Candy Kisses. A special assortment of flat bottomed, tear shaped chocolates are currently selling like hotcakes and can be found practically everywhere. Their main selling point is they come in different colors and each color has a special effect that will make the eater want to kiss the person near them in a certain way (see chart). Some people are deliberately swapping the wrappers around, so be careful!

D. Bleeding Hearts Return. It's Valentine's, yet Cupid is nowhere to be seen. That is because he's still corrupted from last year and now he's thirsting for love, any love. Using the Bleeding Hearts from last year, Cupid is using them to gather all that jealous, possessive love, but of course that's going to make it worse. We're not tackling Cupid here, but the main goal will be helping those who are afflicted by the Bleeding Hearts and purifying them via dreamotion instead of just destroying them. Purifying the Bleeding Hearts with pure love—romantic, platonic, familial, reminders of how they are loved and cared for by others—will help Cupid. Of course this could backfire and make the person feel worse, so be careful!

[Jason lets Nico take the lead on their totally high-risk stealth mission. Granted, sneaking feels way less cool when you can just stroll out and no one at all cares to stop you. But it's still more fun than the actual high-risk life-or-death shit they deal with regularly.

Outside, the weather is dreamily pleasant. The evening air is cool without being chilly, and for all that it's after dark the giant moon still casts plenty of light on everything.
The gardens are bordered by high stone walls, but a wall isn't much of a security measure against either of them, so they're theoretically home free if they wanted to make a run for it.

Not that there really seems to be any urgency.]

Huh. Pretty.

Why? Is there something about the gardens I don't know about? I wanna see if they're better than Persephone's. Doubtful, but still.

[Once outside Nico feels much better. Away from the people, out in the night.]

It is. Makes me think of the fairy tales mamma used to tell me at bedtime.

[Nico looks around and takes his mask off to rub at his face.]

This would be a nice dream if we weren't stuck here.

I meant about the cake dairy situation.

[Jason chuckles, pulling his mask off as well. He tucks it inside his jacket, wandering aimlessly and examining some flowers.]

Your mom sounds nice.

Oh, that. I was joking about that.

[He grins back.]

What little I remember of her is. It's just glimpses, mostly. Little flashes of memory. Not the whole thing, but just knowing it was something she did for me, you know?

[He follows Jason's example and tucks the mask inside his jacket.]

I can't help but wonder if Lethe doesn't affect mortals as much as it does souls. I shouldn't have any memories of her at all, and I didn't until after we defeated the Titans. Or maybe it's my father letting me remember.

Maybe something helped you remember?

[Just shrugs, glancing back to where Nico was wandering. It seems like a potentially rough subject, and he's trying to walk that line between staying close and giving Nico his space. He tries to keep his tone casual.]

I don't know how similar whatever Juno did to my memories is to the Lethe, but I was able to remember Thalia a little bit after seeing her picture and hearing her name. And I couldn't remember my mom's face at all, but I recognized her ghost in Ithaca.

[Nico shrugs back.]

I don't know. It's frustrating not knowing.

[He kneels down, and touches the petals of a beautiful hyacinth, a flower he's come to apperciate since befriending Will. As it doesn't wilt, it shows that he's doing okay.]

Ghosts are like that. Their presence can pull at memories, depending on the type they are.

[He looks over at Jason.]

Did your memories come fully back? I know Percy's did. Hazel told me he took Gorgan's blood.

[Jason's smile is thin, and he looks elsewhere.]

Not really? Some of it did, at least vaguely. It's kind of a mixed bag. I remember knowing Hazel back in Camp Jupiter, before everything happened, but I don't remember you first bringing her there.

[He shrugs again. It's all he can do, short of hunting down a gorgon himself.]

I'm sorry.

[Nico stands and goes over to Jason, gently bumping shoulders with him.]

I spent a lot of my time before you were taken avoiding you. And Reyna. I was, uh, worried you'd find me out. And other things. You were kinda too perfect for me to really know how to deal with.

I regret that now, as you both became the best friends I could have asked for. We could have friends sooner, if I had been braver.

[ nico please his heart will burst ]

It's alright. You're one of my best friends too, you know. Just don't tell Leo.

[He can have multiple best friends. They're very different kinds of friendship anyway. Hanging out with Nico feels quieter. Softer. Which is weird to think about, because he's very aware of how intimidating Nico can be.

Still, it does look like Nico successfully cheered him up a bit. He rocks with the shoulder bump, chuckling under his breath, and rubs at the back of his neck.]

I don't think I've ever actually been anything "perfect", anyway. It just kinda feels like everyone else expects it.

[He remembers what Hercules had said about being a child of Zeus. The pressure was too much for some people. Jason doesn't actually think he's an exception to that.]

Okay, I promise. But if he finds out, I'm going to act surprised.

[He smiles a bit.]

I didn't mean 'perfect' like that. Well, not entirely. I've met Thalia, and she didn't impress me much, so the whole 'Son of Jupiter' thing wasn't as impressive to me as it would be to others.

[He takes a breath.] I was worried you'd turn into another Percy for me. And at the time, I wasn't equipped for that. So that's why I avoided you. I was trying to get over Percy and I didn't need to or want to fall for someone else.

[This is good, he's being open and honest. He can talk about these things with Jason.]

[Jason tries to be mindful with Nico. He wants Nico to feel comfortable with him, and so far it seems like he's done a good job of it. But all of that flies out of his head momentarily at that admission. Jason blinks, turning to actually look at Nico rather than the totally casual sideways interaction he's been going for.]

Really?

[ sir?? you can't just drop that on him!!! ]

[Nico turns his head to look at Jason with a raised eyebrow.]

You've met yourself, right?

[He scowls at himself and shoves his hands into his pockets.]

I know it makes me sound shallow. But my first thought when I met you was 'Oh no, he's handsome, why does he have to be so handsome.' And Hazel kept saying what a great guy you were - which I've come to find out you are. And it just sounded like a recipe for diaster.

I was a hot bed of emotions, and I wanted Hazel to think I was cool. So, yeah. I avoided you.

[Jason doesn't even know what to say to that. He goes a bit pink in the cheeks and ears and instinctually rubs a the back of his hand over his mouth like it might hide it.]

...But you're not worried about that anymore?

[He doesn't even know how he feels about that thought. There's kind of a whole mess of feelings to sort through suddenly.]

[Nico's cheeks turn a little pink, but he shakes his head.]

I don't think so. You have Piper, and I'm done crushing on guys who have girlfriends.

[Truth though? Jason is still very much crush-worthy. He's going to try his best not to. He doesn't want to ruin this friendship.

And there's Will. They're dancing around each other, as Nico isn't quite sure what he feels for the son of Apollo yet, beyond friendship. The attraction is there.

Gods, Nico hopes he doesn't start crushing on every good-looking guy who's nice to him. That would be a mess.]

[If Jason's face looked complicated before, it's somehow 100 times worse now. He goes a bit redder and glances away, laughing awkwardly.]

...This is probably an awkward time to mention that Piper and I broke up.

[Is it weird to say that now?? But it'd definitely be worse if he kept quiet about it when it was directly brought up, right??? Because not saying it would sound like he was trying to avoid anything that might come of saying it, and–

Look, he was not prepared for this turn in the conversation. It's not something he thought he needed to consider before, given...well, everything.]

[It was at that point Nico took a drink of his milk.

And did a spit take.]

Ew, that went out of my nose!

[He dabs at his face with one of the napkins they got and he shoots a wide-eyed look at Jason.] What, when? What?

[He puts his hands up, blows his nows, and then looks at him, still wide-eyed.]

Are you okay?

[Thank the gods for that nose-spittake. It's a solid distraction, one that pulls a surprise huff of laughter out of Jason before he turns the worry on.]

Are you okay? Jeez...

[Tension mercifully diminished a bit, Jason shrugs, still smiling awkwardly.]

I wasn't keeping it a secret or anything, it was just pretty recent. I hadn't even told anyone yet myself. No idea if Piper has, obviously we're giving each other some space. We're okay, though. I think.

[Nico waves his hands awkwardly]

Yeah, I'm fine. Ow.

[He shakes his head in an effort to clear it.]

It's fine. You were on the other side of the country, and I like Piper, but we're not, like, pen pals or anything.

[He was decidedly closer to the Roman part of the Seven. Sure, he scared Frank, but the guy was dating his sister; Nico was allowed to scare him a bit.]

That's good. You guys were a good team. If things between you weren't good, I'm sure she'd tell Annabeth, though she's been up in Boston lately, so I haven't talked to her either.

[Jason nods absently, hands in his pockets.]

It's all just...complicated. Piper's one of my best friends, and obviously she's insanely cool and gorgeous and all that so of course I should have been into her.

[It's just that "should" is the operative word there. Jason takes a moment, trying to put the feeling to words.]

It's just...I mean, we mostly started dating because Juno shoved us together. She gave Piper all these memories of us dating, and it felt like that's just what we were supposed to do. I don't know if either of us can claim for sure things would have gone that way without all the godly meddling, you know? It's a mess.

[To say nothing of Piper questioning her sexuality – which isn't Jason's business to share – or the prophecy hanging over his head making him feel like it'd be best to push her away.

That's a sobering thought. He tries to ignore it, though. It doesn't do anyone any good to dwell on him probably dying in the near future.]

[Nico studies Jason for a moment, sniffs, and awkwardly touches Jason's hand.]

The gods of love can suck it.

[He really doesn't need to be shot with an arrow again, but fuck Cupid.

He remembers the god of love questioning if Jason found his true love in Piper. Decides not to bring that up.]

I think that it makes sense to feel that way. Hera did a lot of meddling. She loves the idea of perfect families. You and Piper, a powerful daughter of Aphrodite, must have been her perfect power couple. It sucks. I'm sorry. She can suck it too.

Careful you don't piss off the wrong god saying things like that out loud.

[Specifically out loud. Internally is fine, because for real, they suck. But he knows better than anyone how legitimate Nico's feelings about love gods are – seriously, fuck Cupid – and the sentiment is warming. Jason smiles, bumping his hand back against Nico's.]

But thanks. I appreciate it.

Hopefully, they're not here.

[But Nico looks to the skies anyway. When nothing happens, he relaxes a bit.]

I've kept that bottled up for months.

[He looks back up at Jason, offers a smile.]

Do you need a hug?

[The laugh that escapes Jason is soft and relieved, just happy he didn't makes things incredibly weird, and he shoots Nico a sideways grin.]

I'm alright, you don't have to comfort me. But I'll totally accept a hug anyway, if that's allowed.

[ one does not simply pass up on nico hugs. they are rare and valuable. ]

[Nico has decided he'll think about Jason being single later. Besides, he's still straight. At least, Nico thinks he is.]

It's been a while since I've seen you; I think can allow this one.

[So he awkwardly opens his arms for Jason to embrace him.]

[At some point in the future, they're gonna have to have Awkward Conversation 2: Electric Boogaloo.

But for now, Jason just grins and wraps his arms around Nico, squeezing him tight. If he hangs on just a bit too long, well, he's taking advantage of the opportunity while he can.]
