It Feeds On The Blood, It Feeds On The Heat
Who: Azula and various CR
Which: Noctaere Plot Log (Closed)
Where: Various locations in Reverein, the Wastelands and Interactive Dreamscapes
What: On the night of the 21st, the heat becomes unbearable. A thunderstorm rolls over Reverein, but there's no rain- posing its own problems when lightning strikes the dry earth. The shape of a bird made of blue flame can be seen fleeing from the village, but the weather disturbances remain, as does the damage it's causing. Fires are a serious concern. The unnatural storms will last until the end of the 22nd. After that, the unnatural dry and intense thunderstorm will subside into a normal heavy rainfall.
Warnings: A lot of violence, possibly including arson and burns. Also some examination of a backstory including abuse, neglect, war crimes, and themes of genocide.

For Najaran @najaran
She's panicking. Trying to escape the village, trying to will herself back to normal, to exert control. It's not working.
Her eyes are still flaring blue, and licks of blue flame keep erupting from her arms. Her chest hurts. Her gut keeps clenching. But the worst feeling is the loss of control, the feeling like something inside her is fighting free, and she can't stop it.
She hisses in pain, doubled over and leaning against a tree. The tree ignites where she touches it. With a frustrated snarl, she collapses to her knees. She tries to still herself, tries to breathe, tries to reassert control- and then she hears footsteps approaching.]
Re: For Najaran @najaran
Look, Najaran can be stupid about a lot of things, but sometimes she has moments of clarity and seeming genius. Usually when it comes to combat or tactics. To lessons learned from her Master and her friends. And one thing she learned from Alta was the basics of trail reading. And this trail was written in giant flaming letters.
She wished she had Water creatures with her. But she'd do her best with what she had.
Najaran left Gremlin out, letting him perch on her head. Then she called back everyone except Thunderbeak. Hopping onto his back they took to the air to follow the path of the flames. If it was a creature causing the fires then wasn't it better to stop the creature first rather than just following to fight the fires?
So she flew, keeping her keen eyes open for...
That wasn't a creature! That was... AZULA!
Najaran landed a bit off, remembering that Azula hadn't been fond of Thunderbeak. So she called him back and went to her friend on foot. "Azula?" she asked when she got close, voice concerned.

"Get... away!"
Even getting that much out is clearly a struggle, and she staggers back to her feet, spontaneous blue flames flickering from her arms, her legs, across the ground beneath her.

Azula doesn't think of herself as easily frightened. There are a few moments that have inspired brief panic in her- Ty Lee's betrayal. Being trapped and helpless at the snow peasant's hands after the Agni Kai. The first encounter with Leshy back in the city. The moment when she first saw Nanashi nearly-dead from starvation. The massive creature that Shealtiel's double had become. Zuko protecting her from Ozai. And, of course, the nightmares that plague her night after night. Those were the worst of all, because they tended to last the longest and feel the most intense. The stab of terror she feels at whatever unnatural force is influencing her right now is worse than any of that.
Her hands tremble with the effort of restraining herself, and she stumbles back from Najaran in a blind panic. The flames spitting from her body flare violently. The rolling storm clouds overhead suddenly split open, a flash of lightning striking close to them- too close- despite the lack of rain.
"I'm warning you."
She tries to keep her voice controlled, but it's all but impossible. It's all she can do to control the rage and panic surging inside her. The composure is lost. Her voice breaks, almost a sob, and the attempted threat comes out more like a desperate plea.

The sentiment is cut off by another pang that doubles her over, and she snarls and throws out a hand toward Najaran to keep her away. The movement is accompanied by a burst of flame from her arm- not thrown forward toward Najaran, but rushing out in all directions, uncontrolled and wild, even catching Azula herself in the blast. She hisses in pain, wincing.
"You can't help me!"

cw: Burns and choking
...what-
For a moment, she simply freezes, and the flames that keep bursting from her skin seem to calm to a light blue vapor of smoke that gently curls off of her limbs. The searing light in her eyes gently recedes, though they remain unnaturally bright blue rather than her usual gold.
The calm lasts only a few seconds. And then a strange, stabbing panic sets in.
why-
She doesn't know why. Except that this already happened with Shealtiel, and she'd hurt him- she'd hurt Shealtiel- she couldn't control it- Monster- like that's anything new- All you your life- not helpful not useful shut UP- Sooner or later- don't say it- they all realize what you are- No. Then. They. Leave.
The panic and erratic heartbeat suddenly become intense, the stabbing pain giving way to an intense heat, a fire burning her up from the inside, and she screams in pain as she suddenly erupts in intense fire, covering her entire body.
With unnatural speed and strength, her arm lashes out and snatches Najaran's neck in her burning hand, wrenching her into the air with impossible power and holding her aloft. The flames lick up her arm, burning Najaran's neck in her grasp.
She snarls in fury, her voice unnaturally distorted and barely recognizable.
"I said... get... away."
After a few terrible moments, she hurls her back across the ground.
Re: cw: Burns and choking
Well, none that she offered. She could have used a Card but...
"Hey, dad?"
"What is it, Naja?"
"Why didn't you take care of those guys with your Cards?"
"Because drawing a Card against a non-Cepter is cowardly."
As always, her father's words are like a guiding light for Najaran. Perhaps because she had so few of them.
So while she could have had Knight stop Azula, she wouldn't have. Even if they weren't friends.
But since they were friends...
Najaran lurched, pushing to her feet. "No..." she said, trying to keep herself from touching the burns at her throat. Dear Culdra it hurt. But if it hurt her, how much worse must Azula be hurting?
She launched herself back at Azula for another hug.
"You're my friend! And I'm going to help you, whatever it takes!"

This time, Azula says nothing. She simply responds by silently throwing a blast of flame- bright, intense, a burst of kinetic force as much as heat, meant to throw Najaran back again.

It's not bending- not exactly. But she's seen the movement enough times, in enough variations of a certain nightmare, that she does it without even thinking. There's no calculation, no strategy, just a reflexive use of Dreamotion.
And steely spikes of ice suddenly sprout from the ground, trying to ensnare Najaran's arms and legs and keep her at bay.

But her friend needed her! This was no time to be helpless. Unless Zenith was going to show up to attack her....
She waited just a moment in odd stillness. He always showed up when she was helpless to try and kill her.
Nope, no Zenith this time.
So she was free to focus on Azula, but first she had to get out. Good thing she ate a lot of snow and ice as a kid! She started chowing down on the ice.

So be it. She's got a few moments before Najaran breaks free of the ice. She centers her stance and raises her arms, two fingers extended as she pulls her hands in slow circles around herself.
The blue flames spreading over her body grow brighter, and thunder begins to roll from the heavy stormclouds overhead despite the lack of rain as she releases a powerful burst of electricity toward Najaran.

Enraged that someone had attacked his Cepter, Thunderbeak opened his mouth, a lightning ball building there.
"NO!" Najaran cried, grabbing him around the neck. "She didn't mean to! She's my friend!"
Thunderbeak turned his head, shooting his lightning into the sky instead.

Or at least, for a moment it does. Until the creature finally prepares to attack her, and Najaran doesn't let it.
There's a moment of stillness, as if Azula can't quite comprehend what she just saw. Then an explosion of fire erupts from all around her, engulfing her surroundings and igniting buildings and foliage.

Najaran jumped onto Thunderbeak's back as he launched himself at the young woman, intending to pick her up and fly off with her.

Instead, the Noctaere erupts into the sky, blue flames surrounding its body in the shape of a massive phoenix. Despite being apparently formed entirely of fire, its wings are apparently solid enough to stir the air around it, blistering winds kicking up debris and ash and fanning the embers that were already smoldering in the grass around it as it rises into the air.
As Thunderbeak and Najaran approach it, it breathes a stream of flames at them to drive them away.
Oh good, there is a Phoenix Card, so Naja can know what she became! Wheeee

It's only possible to get the most fleeting glimpse before the phoenix suddenly dives into a roll, sending arcs of slicing flame in all directions to try and strike Thunderbeak and Najaran out of the air.

It wheels around and rapidly charges Thunderbeak, throwing a broad burst of flame to force it onto the defensive, then raking at it with massive claws to try and knock it out of the sky.
