HALLOWEEN

Another Halloween has arrived in Reverein, and the Nightmare Troupe returns from their mysterious origins to help transform the carnival grounds to fit the season. They've added a new feature attraction: The Labyrinth, where everyone just runs around to fight spooky baddies for candy, prizes, and flex one's combat abilities in dreamotion. It's all in good fun, of course!

More details on everything can be found here. As a reminder, events double as our TDMs and information can be found here. Any outside characters participating in the log are canonly logged as appearing in Songerein in October and will remain in Songerein from the IC date of October 25th, just before the event ICly begins. TDM only characters can only thread within this log. Anyone who apps in and is accepted will have their character count October as their first time in the game without any disruption, so all content will carry over. Those who do not apply will disappear which should not seem too unusual, however players in game can choose to retcon and pretend a character was never there to begin with if it would be easier; or even think their presence was just a dream.

IMPORTANT! All outside characters MUST have "TDM" in their subject line, even if you might not app. This will help people differentiate those who are already in the game and those who are not.

TDM threads are required for samples. Refer to the Game Info for general information and feel free to toss any questions here. Reserves will open October 25th and Applications will open on November 1st. Our application cycles are bi-monthly so the next cycle after won't be until January.

I. CARNIVAL

While the carnival grounds still have the standard fare of attractions themed up for Halloween, there are a few new ones popping up thanks to the Nightmare Troupe. Some are similar to what appeared last year, but with a different look to them. Some, perhaps, more terrifying than before.

A. Personalized Costumes. All throughout Reverein boutiques and tailors are in full swing to create costumes for those who wish to wear, either by renting or buying. However, for those who are a bit adverse, the fairy godmothers are out and about ready to employ their fashion magic to grant anyone and everyone a special Halloween costume, just for them! There might be the slight side effect that the wearer may behave like the costume itself, but it's just a temporary phase.

B. Vampring Frights. The vamprings are still out and about, nibbling on nightmares. But now they are also appearing outside of dreams, deciding that a bit of fear could make as good of a snack or meal as any other. Only the ones that are truly hungry will appear, so a little purple blob will bounce and latch onto any part of their target's body they can reach (though they particularly like the top of the head). Those who are bitten in this manner won't try to bite others, fortunately. Instead, they will become something like a "Vampring minion" and try to invoke fear and scare others. C. Monster Swaps. Small monsters will roam the carnival grounds and will swap bodies with random people to go around pulling pranks and tricks in the person's body. The person is now trapped in the monster's body, but has access to the monster's trickster, spooky abilities as well (ie, players can make this up). To return to normal, they must find their original body and bite it. Otherwise, they will have to wait for the monster to get bored and return to switch them back.

D. Carnival Fare. Here are a few of the general games and attractions available for carnival goers to enjoy.

🔫 Zombie Shooter. Ride through a rickety car through a building and shoot the "zombies" that pop up with bright green paintball guns. While most are cardboard, there are a few volunteers that dress for the occasion. Don't mind their pain as they get hit, they're fine.
👻 Spooky Stories. Instead of a fire, there is a boiling cauldron set up where people can gather around and try to conjure up their spookiest story. The steam over the cauldron will change and twist to try and illustrate the story as it goes, and should it proof particularly scary, a manifestation of the terror will crawl out of it to terrorize everyone for a little bit before disappearing.
🍏 Poisoned Apples. Special caramel covered green apples are handed out throughout the carnival. One bite will inflict one or more of the following effects: floating, dizzy, sugar rush, creepy, frightful. (Players are free to be creative and come up with additional effects!)
🧹 Broom Carousel. The horses have been replaced with different styles of witch brooms, letting everyone have a safe experience of flying on a broom. Until the brooms suddenly fly out of the carousel and into the carnival. Hang on or stop that broom!
🎃 Pumpkin Carving Challenge. Pumpkins can be found all over the grounds, and there is a challenge to carve them with dreamotion and light a special candle in them. Doing so will bring the pumpkin to life and behave like whatever expression or drawing carved on them. Whether they behave nicely is a different matter. Blowing out the candle will stop the pumpkin.

E. House of Mirrors. The House of Mirrors will have new mirrors installed that have new special effects…many making everyone inside feel not quite themselves.

🎭 Jekyll and Hyde. A black framed mirror where the opposite version of the viewer appears to taunt them.
💅 Narcissism. A gold framed mirror where one will see the best version of themselves and will stand stuck in front of it admiring themselves. They will need to be forcibly dragged away…else they may get stuck on the mirror.
🛌 Dream or Nightmare? A silver framed mirror that will reflect either a good dream or a nightmare that's on the viewer's mind. It will be a strong image, so strong that the viewer may be tempted to dreamwalk into the mirror, either to be a part of it or to destroy it. Some help may be required to help them either accomplish their goal or pull them out.
🪞 Mirror Version. Sometimes, a "mirror version" of the viewer may reach out to switch places, trapping the original inside the mirror while the mirror version goes out to cause some chaos. The trapped person can only traverse through mirrors, and can only be freed if the mirrored version is shoved back into any mirror. One way to tell a mirror version apart is that they will randomly reflect things off their body.

F. Haunted Ryokan. A haunted Japanese styled inn is the theme for this year's "haunted house." On the outside, it looks invitingly eerie, with life-sized traditional Japanese dolls as their hosts and guides. They hope their new patrons will enjoy their stay…forever.

🏮 Peony Lantern. At first a beautiful woman will appear holding a lantern and take a person's hand to lead them through the narrow halls lit by floating lanterns. But whenever they pass under a lantern, the woman's form changes into a skeleton. Once they are noticed, they will screech and chase them through the hallways and rooms to the next location, but if left alone it will quietly lead them without issue.
🛁 Bathhouse. Somehow they get to the bathing area where the steam rises thick around them. Without warning a ghostly figure of a long-haired drowned woman will crawl out and chase with a bloody knife. Fish spirits will also fly out to impede them, but they could be used to smack the woman instead. Should someone slip in the water, they'll feel hands grab at them, trying to pull them under…
🪦 Graveyard. Past the courtyard is a graveyard where all manner of Japanese inspired ghosts and demons roam. A special paper talisman is available, and once powered with positive dreamotion it will create a shikigami that will help ward off and defend against the ghosts. But it must have constant dreamotion poured into it, so should it ever go out, the ghosts and demons will suddenly rush into chase.
🐕 Shiba Statues. Should anyone be having a truly terrible time, special little shiba inu statues will trot in to dispel the "evils" and give the visitor some much needed comfort and respite. They will even guide them to the exit if needed. Those who manage to pass through on their own will also meet the shiba inu statues and have a chance to play with them as if in congratulations.

II. LABYRINTH

A big structure now occupies the area just beyond the Fairgrounds. Towering stone walls hide complex pathways inside, and it turns out its express purpose is not to get people lost, but for a little bit of exploration. There is no entrance/exit, just a special circular teleportation pad that will take them inside and there is no end goal. It's not difficult to get out once inside, but the winding paths encourage visitors to check behind corners for treats because there's a lot of treats AND tricks!

A. Halloween Creatures. The labyrinth is populated with silly creatures held together by ~~craft glue and duct tape~~ both dreamotion and nightmare. These creatures will attack on sight, but subdue them and reap the rewards: candy and silly toys! It's all for fun, after all.

🦴 Skeletons. Their bones are made of rubber and most physical attacks will bounce off them. Have to get in close to blast with dreamotion!
🕷 Glow-In-The-Dark Plastic Spiders. Will shoot sticky licorice webbing that will trip up and trap any caught in it. Have to eat through it to get out, and the flavor could either be red or black.
🔺 Candy Corn Golems. Chuck giant pieces of candy corn that are delicious, but hurt! Golems will melt under intense heat.

B. Mysterious Doors. Sometimes, you may find a door at one of the dead ends. Knock, and most of the time a kindly old lady (where did she come from? Don't worry about it–) will present you with special trick-or-treat bags. The other times, a swarm of genuinely sinister nightmare creatures will come pouring out. Oops! Try again next time! Here are some of the items the old lady will give and their effects (they can be taken home after the event):

🧙 Witch's Hat. The hat will automatically fly on top of the person's head and will allow them to cast silly hexes of misfortune on their targets.
🧹 Witch's Broom. Can fly at fast speeds for a few minutes at a time. Only goes up to three feet in the air.
🤓 Plastic Fangs. These fangs will fit themselves in the person's mouth and will allow them to bite any candy corn golem or sticky spider licorice webbing with ease. And normal foods, too.
🕸 Spray Can of Licorice Webbing. Releases a spray of licorice webbing similar to the ones used by the plastic spiders.
🧻 Roll of Toilet Paper. Exactly as it says.
🍫 Nougat Center. A delicious treat that will temporarily boost one's ~~stats~~ dreamotion abilities.

C. Beware of Steve. If you're very unlucky, you may hear an ominous clatter in the distance... The low rumble of a revving chainsaw... Those who spend lots of time in the labyrinth will know soon enough–those are noises that mean you need to run. Because STEVE, THE 20-FOOT-TALL CHAINSAW-WIELDING SKELETON, takes no hostages, and he's out for blood!!! He will continue chasing people until fought, and anything goes with this foe. While dreamotion attacks will work, using the items given by the old lady in the doors will inflict greater damage. Anyone who is "killed" by Steve will be knocked out of the Labyrinth unharmed.

D. Grand High Viscount of Candy Corn. On the other end of giant "horrors" is a giant golem made of candy corn with a large top hat that may appear out of one of the doors. Its main attack, besides trying to punch and pummel, is spewing sticky candy goop that will trap anyone caught in it. It'll wear off, but until then, any caught in it will at first feel very energetic and attack more quickly before becoming sluggish and unable to do much, as if they suffered an extreme sugar crash.

[ anyway, after all that, hiyori can't believe he dares to hug her. incredible. as he spins them around, she's still COMPLETELY flabbergasted and rolling the word "couple" over through her mind. couple... she should have done something when she heard that...

what was it?

yato's exuberance distracts her from everything. his comeback period sure is fast. ]

I-I didn't know we could win anything.

[The ironic thing is that Yato never expects an apology for the punishment he endures, justified or not. He knows that that the the wrath he incurs carries over to the more innocent mishaps such as this; reaping what he's sown, as it were. Besides, Hiyori can do no wrong in his eyes. If it comes from her, then it's divine judgment. Much more just than that of the heavens.

Point is, he holds no ill will for being turned into a projectile, especially since it won them the game. Which they didn't even know they were playing!]

We did pretty good together, didn't we? We make a great team!

[Somehow in the thrill of winning, he's missed the key word of "couple" that the attendant used. That or he's just so enamored with their prize, taking it from Hiyori so he can hold it up between them like it's a baby or something. His beaming smile shines from over top the plush, practically sparkling with delight.

It's such a simple token, yet one filled with much meaning for him.]

What should we name the little guy?

[It's a commemorative gift marking their time here at the carnival! They have to name it!!]

[ yato, that is sad and weird but also very wholesome. hiyori was definitely in the wrong for chucking him out the back door no matter what they won in the end. if he won't chastise her, then she'll just chastise herself.

but he sure is oddly pure sometimes...

being called a great team makes her blush again. this time, it's a SAFE BLUSH and not one where she throws him again. it's a happy blush and a small, shy smile peeks through her lips. ]

Yeah. We do, huh? [ yato and yukine always made the best team in her mind. still, it's kind of nice to be considered great together. she lets him take the plush without fuss. or maybe she's just kind of stunned?? that he looks so happy after "divine punishment". ]

Name it? [ if he wants to, then there's no harm? yeah, she's forgotten the couple thing, too. it's for the best. ]

I'm not good at naming things. [ hiyori confesses, but something comes to mind. it seems appropriate. their first day here and running into each other like they did. hiyori saving yato. yato saving hiyori. changing her life completely. ] Ah. Uesama...?

[ if he doesn't like it she can just say it'S A JOKE... ]

[That's him in a nutshell at times~ When he's not being a stupid pervert at least. Though she better not let him hear berating herself for the ill treatment of him- he wouldn't stand for it.

Thank goodness for her having calmed down, though. He may not hold any ill will, but dang if it doesn't suck to be sore from her wrestling moves. Besides, he much prefers to see her happy. Like now! A happy Hiyori makes for a happy Yatogami.]

Yup! A real power couple! [...ah. So he did hear what the attendant said. Or perhaps it's just an innocent turn of phrase?? Who can tell with him and that ~smile~? At least it doesn't seem like a deliberate attempt to rile her up.]

Hmm, after that crazy cat that brought us together, huh? That's pretty sweet. Okay! Uesama it is! We can get it a little crown and everything. [Just like the emblem on his jersey! Maybe they could give it a tail to represent Hiyori?? Or that could just be a little weird considering it's a plush zombie of all things. At least it's still fairly cute, unlike the targets they were aiming at on the ride.]

You hungry again? I saw a candy apple stall a little ways back. [He holds out Uesama for her to take, feeling it rightfully belongs to her given that triple scoring there at the end.]

[ oh no, that's aaaallll internal. so unless he can read minds--

power couple. it's an innocent turn of phrase for couples! and hiyori sputters over denying it. they're not a COUPLE. that carnival worker had the wrong idea, okay! don't run with it. that's what she meant to correct them on but her brain gave up or something?? from winning a prize she didn't know about.

it's better... not to react. to his flirting. other than a flat, "we're not a couple." even her onii-chan mistook yato as SOMETHING. HE WASN'T. they're a power coupLE OF FRIENDS!!!

moving on. to literally anything else. sure, yep, she'll take the candy apples while taking uesama from his hands to hug to her chest. ]

Why are you asking me when we both know you're the hungry one? [ food has been safe so far, though. they should just stick to the food stalls and go listen to where the music is coming from. maybe there's a band they can enjoy. ]

Lead the way, Yato.

[Thankfully not-- he can hardly read Hiyori normally at times!

Kind of like now, where her comment gets a questioning tilt of the head and a pout. DENIED. To absolutely no one's surprise. She always so expertly crushes his advances that it's become something of a comfortable routine, one he find solace in. Doesn't mean he wouldn't like an answer to the positive eventually; that's another reason he keeps trying.

But for now he's content enough her accepting Uesama and not punting him again. Glancing over at her, he slips both hands into his pockets with a light shrug.]

I thought you might be hungry also. [It's his vain attempt at being courteous after everything that's happened today. He owes her that much, at least.] Let me know if there's something else you want.

[He starts off for the food stalls at a slightly brisk walk, eyes trained on the path ahead as he leads them through the crowd of costumes. With his longer legs he might be going a bit fast for her, though he's seemingly oblivious to this fact as well.]

... oh. she thought he was, but he was just being... LOOK, sometimes she's not used to yato not being selfish and greedy. that he's thinking of other people and their happiness. hers, included. being a god of fortune. she's a bit lost in her thoughts so yato pulls pretty far ahead until she realizes he's disappearing into the crowd. ]

Wait-- Yato.

[ she weaves through costumes and bodies as well. uesama clutched in one arm and the other stretching forward for his body. she bumps into someone and apologizes quickly, eyes trained on the back of his head. panic rises to her throat with how easily he blends into the crowd. a shadow. a background character, just like he said.

don't... don't leave her.

finally, her fingers grab and wrap tightly around his wrist to stop him in his tracks. if he turns around, her face is more pale. her eyes are wide. her teeth grit. hugging the plush so hard to her, the eyes could've popped out. ]

W, wait, I said.

[H-Hey, he is trying to be better about that in addition to taking his job as a God of Fortune more seriously...! But really, he shouldn't be surprised when honest offers are met with skepticism given his past behavior. It'll take time to build up trust. Though surging on ahead without Hiyori isn't really the way to go about it.

He seems not to hear her call out his name, gradually getting lost among the shuffle of myriad colors and shapes of the costumed bodies going this way and that, like a turbulent tide threatening to rip them apart. He doesn't even look back, thinking she'd be right behind him like always, able to follow him with that uncanny sense of hers, unaware of how fragile the link between them is.

It takes her delicate fingers grasping him to draw him to a sudden halt, turning around with a confused expression on his face that only grows worried when he sees hers. That she seems almost... frightened startles him, leading him to hesitantly reach a hand out towards her face.]

Hiyori...? What's wrong?

[ it's not her trust he doesn't have, per se. people are creatures of habit. unfortunately, yato already built up one habit in her mind. ]

I--

[ she can't tell him. that she doesn't have her diary to look back on to remember. that in this foreign place, there are none of the usual landmarks that house memories of their time together. that if he disappears while she's not looking, she's going to forget him. she's terrified of that and she can't tell him.

she doesn't push away his hand. she doesn't even seem to see it as she looks at his face. ]

I, I couldn't keep up with you.

[Gods in particular are slow to change, so her hesitation to have faith in him does make sense.

Unaware of what all her fears are, Yato simply cups her cheek in his hand, thumb stroking her skin. Whatever it is that's bothering her, he won't press the issue even if he wants to do something to help her navigate it. It's not his place to demand that she confide in him. Whatever her reasons are for keeping it to herself, he'll respect that.]

I'm sorry. I thought you were closer behind me. Here--

[Taking up her free hand, he clutches it firmly in his own and turns, making sure she's by his side.]

We'll go together.

[ against his palm, her cheek warms but the frenetic energy coursing through her soothes to calm. she's always been the most comfortable around yato, but this...

is this an effect of dreaming? this content, floaty feeling? hiyori opens her mouth and jolts to wave off his apology. she's just being dramatic. picked it up from him, haha--

but he's already taking her hand in the next moment.

... she feels childish for how clingy her behavior is but doesn't let go of his hand. if anything, her fingers flex and hold tighter. ]

I overreacted. [ comes hiyori's quiet voice from behind him. ]

[Wondering if perhaps it's the chill in the air tinging Hiyori's cheeks red, Yato thinks on the types of food stalls they've passed by throughout the day. If he's correct, there was also one distributing drinks. Maybe they have something hot?

Changing course, he leads them carefully through the crowd, squeezing her hand in return. He won't let go this time. No more losing each other, not now that they're together.

At her words though, he slows enough to glance over his shoulder at her, eyebrows raised in curiosity.]

How so? [Given the trouble they've gotten into, he can hardly blame her for not wanting to be alone in this dream world. ]

[ pumpkin spice lattes.

with his attention on her, she quickly drops her gaze to her feet and off to the side. yeah, blame the red in her face on the brisk air. good idea, yato. 10/10

how so? how does he not...no, he wouldn't. she has to explain it. ]

On the ride, when I threw you. I know you didn't fall there deliberately, but I just-- [ huffs!! ] Just now, too. I worried you over something silly. [ although that-- hm. that is the consequence of a LOT of things. ] Probably something else, too. [ probably something that will happen in the future. ]

So!! S-so I'm trying to say, I'm sorry for overreacting. You probably could've beaten that golem if I hadn't interfered, either. I'm always sticking my nose into your business, huh? Haha...

[Or hot apple cider!

Coming to a halt, he turns to face her, expression softening into one of fondness. Oh, silly, silly Hiyori...

Thinks the silliest god of them all.]

That was just a reaction - I don't blame you for it. I should've tried harder to get out of your lap sooner. [He shakes his head, taking her other hand.] And this wasn't silly. So much crazy shit's happened in the last few hours, it's only natural you'd be nervous. [So many apologies! And for things he thinks are entirely inconsequential.]

I appreciate the sentiment, Hiyori. But I'm sure you saved my ass back there. If anything I should be thanking you for getting me out of there before I became a pancake. [Squeezing both her hands gently, he glances down at the ground between them.] ...you say that like I don't already get into everything you do. That just makes us even.

[ OOOO YUMMY.

... well, yeah, he should have tried harder to get out of her lap sooner. that's true. she startles at yato taking her other hand.

it's also true that so much crazy sh-- stuff has happened since she got here. she is nervous, but not entirely because of everything that's happened to them thus far. ]

Yato.

[ pancake yato. she huffs a small laugh at his goofy joke and fights the heat that wants to fill her face when he squeezes her hands and sighs. blowing some of her anxieties out with it. ]

... Okay. I believe you if you say so. [ thoughtless, she squeezes his hands too and her smile touches her eyes a little more. ]

Yeah, you do get into a lot of my stuff. [ UNIFORMS!!! ]

[They can have both!

She's likely to get a bit more nervous as Yato holds her hands - to him they feel a touch on the cold side, so he starts gently rubbing over them. It's an act that also works to calm his own nerves. What if he'd lost Hiyori in this dream world? What if she'd gotten hurt because of his recklessness and it had an affect on her sleeping body? He doesn't want to find out.]

[Turning back to their goal, he switches to simply holding one of her hands, half tugging her along.]

What can I say, you're fun! [At least they're old ones??

Once they're at the drinks booth, he peruses the menu and glances at her.]

Whatcha want? Pumpkin spice latte? Apple cider? Tea?

[ okay, mm, that is... no, hiyori. he's trying to be nice. HE'S BEING NICE. his hands are so clammy how are they so clammy?? is it the jersey

it must be the jersey.

she's relieved when he holds her hand normally and tugs her along. uesama nearly got dropped but he's safely cradled to her chest again. ]

I think your opinion on fun is different than mine.

[ THEY'RE NOT OLD ONES. SHE SAW HIM IN HER SUMMER UNIFORM AT HER CURRENT HIGH SCHOOL. HE WAS IN HER PE LOCKER!!! anyway. she is going to browse the menu and pause in confusion once it sinks in this isn't what he said he wanted. ]

Huh? I thought you wanted candy apples. These are drinks.

[It must be the jersey, getting him overheated. Either that or something else is making him hot and bothered?? It's not like he's been fighting recently, so it shouldn't be that. It's so hard to tell.

Can't drop their precious ~~child~~ Uesama! Thank goodness Hiyori is taking good care of him.]

Not too different, though! I mean, you've been having fun too, right?

[T-THAT WAS... WELL... OKAY SO MAYBE HE WANTED TO TRY ON A HIGH SCHOOL UNIFORM JUST ONCE. Once he's called out for the change in stops, he seems to get a little nervous, tottering back and forth on his heels as he scans the list of drinks.]

I-- I thought you seemed a bit chilled, so I figured we'd get something warm first before heading over there. Besides! I heard they have pumpkin spice lattes...!

[ what could POSSIBLY be getting him hot and bothered!!

has she been having fun? in the bouts of downtime between each unfortunate event, she has been smiling. and laughing. being swung around was fun. riding the broom was amazing!! before she fell off. the paintball game was fun, too. eating the funnel cakes. sharing food was... also kinda fun. ]

Yeah. I've been having fun too, Yato. [ upon realizing that, she smiles again.

HE ALREADY TRIED ON A HIGH SCHOOL UNIFORM WHEN HE POSSESSED HER BODY. HE JUST WANTS TO WEAR HER CLOTHES FOR SOME UNFATHOMABLE REASON SHE DOESN'T GET.

he brought them here because he thought she was cold. well, certainly not in hER FACE. that's red and hot. or their hands. or in her chest where a warm fuzziness wedges itself in. ]

O, oh.

[ that was... really thoughtful... ] Okay. Um. Just the, um, pumpkin spice latte.

[ JUST NEED YOGA PANTS AND UGGS. ]
