HALLOWEEN
Another Halloween has arrived in Reverein, and the Nightmare Troupe returns from their mysterious origins to help transform the carnival grounds to fit the season. They've added a new feature attraction: The Labyrinth, where everyone just runs around to fight spooky baddies for candy, prizes, and flex one's combat abilities in dreamotion. It's all in good fun, of course!
More details on everything can be found here. As a reminder, events double as our TDMs and information can be found here. Any outside characters participating in the log are canonly logged as appearing in Songerein in October and will remain in Songerein from the IC date of October 25th, just before the event ICly begins. TDM only characters can only thread within this log. Anyone who apps in and is accepted will have their character count October as their first time in the game without any disruption, so all content will carry over. Those who do not apply will disappear which should not seem too unusual, however players in game can choose to retcon and pretend a character was never there to begin with if it would be easier; or even think their presence was just a dream.
IMPORTANT! All outside characters MUST have "TDM" in their subject line, even if you might not app. This will help people differentiate those who are already in the game and those who are not.
TDM threads are required for samples. Refer to the Game Info for general information and feel free to toss any questions here. Reserves will open October 25th and Applications will open on November 1st. Our application cycles are bi-monthly so the next cycle after won't be until January.

I. CARNIVAL
While the carnival grounds still have the standard fare of attractions themed up for Halloween, there are a few new ones popping up thanks to the Nightmare Troupe. Some are similar to what appeared last year, but with a different look to them. Some, perhaps, more terrifying than before.

D. Carnival Fare. Here are a few of the general games and attractions available for carnival goers to enjoy.

🔫 Zombie Shooter. Ride through a rickety car through a building and shoot the "zombies" that pop up with bright green paintball guns. While most are cardboard, there are a few volunteers that dress for the occasion. Don't mind their pain as they get hit, they're fine.
👻 Spooky Stories. Instead of a fire, there is a boiling cauldron set up where people can gather around and try to conjure up their spookiest story. The steam over the cauldron will change and twist to try and illustrate the story as it goes, and should it proof particularly scary, a manifestation of the terror will crawl out of it to terrorize everyone for a little bit before disappearing.
🍏 Poisoned Apples. Special caramel covered green apples are handed out throughout the carnival. One bite will inflict one or more of the following effects: floating, dizzy, sugar rush, creepy, frightful. (Players are free to be creative and come up with additional effects!)
🧹 Broom Carousel. The horses have been replaced with different styles of witch brooms, letting everyone have a safe experience of flying on a broom. Until the brooms suddenly fly out of the carousel and into the carnival. Hang on or stop that broom!
🎃 Pumpkin Carving Challenge. Pumpkins can be found all over the grounds, and there is a challenge to carve them with dreamotion and light a special candle in them. Doing so will bring the pumpkin to life and behave like whatever expression or drawing carved on them. Whether they behave nicely is a different matter. Blowing out the candle will stop the pumpkin.
E. House of Mirrors. The House of Mirrors will have new mirrors installed that have new special effects…many making everyone inside feel not quite themselves.

🎭 Jekyll and Hyde. A black framed mirror where the opposite version of the viewer appears to taunt them.
💅 Narcissism. A gold framed mirror where one will see the best version of themselves and will stand stuck in front of it admiring themselves. They will need to be forcibly dragged away…else they may get stuck on the mirror.
🛌 Dream or Nightmare? A silver framed mirror that will reflect either a good dream or a nightmare that's on the viewer's mind. It will be a strong image, so strong that the viewer may be tempted to dreamwalk into the mirror, either to be a part of it or to destroy it. Some help may be required to help them either accomplish their goal or pull them out.
🪞 Mirror Version. Sometimes, a "mirror version" of the viewer may reach out to switch places, trapping the original inside the mirror while the mirror version goes out to cause some chaos. The trapped person can only traverse through mirrors, and can only be freed if the mirrored version is shoved back into any mirror. One way to tell a mirror version apart is that they will randomly reflect things off their body.
F. Haunted Ryokan. A haunted Japanese styled inn is the theme for this year's "haunted house." On the outside, it looks invitingly eerie, with life-sized traditional Japanese dolls as their hosts and guides. They hope their new patrons will enjoy their stay…forever.

🏮 Peony Lantern. At first a beautiful woman will appear holding a lantern and take a person's hand to lead them through the narrow halls lit by floating lanterns. But whenever they pass under a lantern, the woman's form changes into a skeleton. Once they are noticed, they will screech and chase them through the hallways and rooms to the next location, but if left alone it will quietly lead them without issue.
🛁 Bathhouse. Somehow they get to the bathing area where the steam rises thick around them. Without warning a ghostly figure of a long-haired drowned woman will crawl out and chase with a bloody knife. Fish spirits will also fly out to impede them, but they could be used to smack the woman instead. Should someone slip in the water, they'll feel hands grab at them, trying to pull them under…
🪦 Graveyard. Past the courtyard is a graveyard where all manner of Japanese inspired ghosts and demons roam. A special paper talisman is available, and once powered with positive dreamotion it will create a shikigami that will help ward off and defend against the ghosts. But it must have constant dreamotion poured into it, so should it ever go out, the ghosts and demons will suddenly rush into chase.
🐕 Shiba Statues. Should anyone be having a truly terrible time, special little shiba inu statues will trot in to dispel the "evils" and give the visitor some much needed comfort and respite. They will even guide them to the exit if needed. Those who manage to pass through on their own will also meet the shiba inu statues and have a chance to play with them as if in congratulations.
II. LABYRINTH
A big structure now occupies the area just beyond the Fairgrounds. Towering stone walls hide complex pathways inside, and it turns out its express purpose is not to get people lost, but for a little bit of exploration. There is no entrance/exit, just a special circular teleportation pad that will take them inside and there is no end goal. It's not difficult to get out once inside, but the winding paths encourage visitors to check behind corners for treats because there's a lot of treats AND tricks!
A. Halloween Creatures. The labyrinth is populated with silly creatures held together by craft glue and duct tape both dreamotion and nightmare. These creatures will attack on sight, but subdue them and reap the rewards: candy and silly toys! It's all for fun, after all.

🦴 Skeletons. Their bones are made of rubber and most physical attacks will bounce off them. Have to get in close to blast with dreamotion!
🕷 Glow-In-The-Dark Plastic Spiders. Will shoot sticky licorice webbing that will trip up and trap any caught in it. Have to eat through it to get out, and the flavor could either be red or black.
🔺 Candy Corn Golems. Chuck giant pieces of candy corn that are delicious, but hurt! Golems will melt under intense heat.
B. Mysterious Doors. Sometimes, you may find a door at one of the dead ends. Knock, and most of the time a kindly old lady (where did she come from? Don't worry about it–) will present you with special trick-or-treat bags. The other times, a swarm of genuinely sinister nightmare creatures will come pouring out. Oops! Try again next time! Here are some of the items the old lady will give and their effects (they can be taken home after the event):

🧙 Witch's Hat. The hat will automatically fly on top of the person's head and will allow them to cast silly hexes of misfortune on their targets.
🧹 Witch's Broom. Can fly at fast speeds for a few minutes at a time. Only goes up to three feet in the air.
🤓 Plastic Fangs. These fangs will fit themselves in the person's mouth and will allow them to bite any candy corn golem or sticky spider licorice webbing with ease. And normal foods, too.
🕸 Spray Can of Licorice Webbing. Releases a spray of licorice webbing similar to the ones used by the plastic spiders.
🧻 Roll of Toilet Paper. Exactly as it says.
🍫 Nougat Center. A delicious treat that will temporarily boost one'sstatsdreamotion abilities.

[A fight that he needs to direct towards the mirrors. That’s the only way this is going to end ‘well’.]
[Moving in a half-circle, he brings his blade around and brings a heavy vertical slash down on not!Yato's defensive blade, channeling the momentum gained against his opponent to try to force not!Yato back.]
no subject
Tch--!
[Shoving his attacker's blade aside, he plants his feet again and swings wildly at him with his offensive weapon, aiming to cut him on his exposed side. All he needs to do is injure him enough to get away... To escape with his prize. Then maybe he'll have the secret to remaining outside the mirrors...!]
no subject
[Despite the years Joshua dedicated to learning how to fight (not many, comparative to his brother and other, actual soldiers, but still), he hasn't gotten rid of all of his bad habits.]
[He left himself open. Again.]
[Sure enough, he has to clench back a yelp as his opponent's blade glances against his side, catching mostly layers of thick fabric but still managing to bite into his skin.]
[But he presses forward, used to pain and dampening it with purpose. He'll just have to remember to heal himself when this is all done (he definitely won't regret ignoring it later).]
[It's also clear that this shadow has him all but completely bested when it comes to swordplay. That unfamiliar style combined with blazing speed makes for a challenge Joshua hasn't time nor energy to study and overcome. It's all he can do to defend against any oncoming blows until he can regain his footing.]
no subject
[As not!Yato feels his blade hit flesh, a grin spreads across his face like blood through the fabric, urging him into pressing his advantage with swing after swing, metal clashing against metal from Joshua blocking his blows.]
[He can't help a breathless laugh of sheer joy at having an opponent who can actually stand up to him for some measure of time. All the other residents of Reverein were worth was childish tormenting via pranks and general destruction of property. But this--! This is glorious! It makes his war god blood pump with a fervor like nothing else.]
Come--! Come on, you can do better than that, can't you?!
[He lunges again, aiming his blade for Joshua's hand in an attempt to disarm him this time, while actual!Yato helplessly cries out for him to dodge.]
no subject
[The pathetic thing about Joshua's performance here is that he can do better than this. He has done better. The fact that he's alive now to take part in this mess proves as much.]
[But he's off. The month has been taking its toll on him, and today was no exception.]
[Joshua isn't quick enough to fully deflect nor dodge per the Yato in the mirror's insistence. His gloves are enough to keep his hands relatively safe (the blade connects, but he will thankfully be keeping all of his fingers this time), but even if Burning Thorn doesn't drop, his form has been forced open, and he has no choice but to surrender some ground to the doppelgänger.]
[He grits his teeth in frustration, but doesn't indulge that jeer with a retort of his own. Instead, Joshua's mind races elsewhere, trying to figure out a way to turn this fight around. He'll probably have to resort to more of his magicks again. Dangerous, given their flammable surroundings, but if he's not given a choice, then that's just a risk everyone will have to take.]
no subject
[Almost as if he's sensing the other's awkwardness, the shadow growls in frustration at how easy it's gotten to push Joshua back. This isn't why he chose to fight. Even if his base nature is to kill, he wants there to be a firm resistance to it. He wants to see him fighting for his life, like really means something.]
[As their blades clash together and stick, wavering between them, not!Yato leans in to hiss in his face.]
If you were just going to lay down and die you should've done so from the start--!
[Getting another foot up between them, he kicks the young man backwards before leaping back in, slashing in a wild frenzy unlike anything before. He's gotten both serious and reckless, foregoing defense in order to focus on aiming for a killing blow. It panics Yato enough that he follows them frantically to the nearest mirror, yelling to Joshua again, hoping his voice will reach him.]
--ra! Sakura--! Use the name Sakura...!
no subject
[But when it does, it's just in time for a strike to crack his barrier. The next one is sure to shatter it.]
[It's now or never--and never is a mere swing away.]
S-Sakura!
no subject
Never's swing comes down like a flash, light glinting off its mirrored edge. It's mere centimeters away when Joshua shouts that innocuous name, freezing the doppelganger in place. His fingers twitch on the hilt of his dreamotion blades as a pained expression comes over his face, culminating in a single tear rolling down his cheek.
From the mirror, the actual Yato hisses to Joshua and flaps a hand at him, encouraging him to chuck, throw, shove, whatever the mirror version of himself that way. Anything to get the other guy in and him out.]
no subject
[First order of business: vacate the stalemate, which Joshua does without hesitation, swiftly shimmying under and around. Second is to grab this poltergeistic pain in the ass by his stupid jacket, reach inside, pull out the book that caused this mess in the first place. Finally, he lashes out with the magic ingrained into his very being, letting loose another blast of fire, fueled by frustration and a need for catharsis, and propels Yato’s mirror back into the literal mirror.]
[Were the fire or the roughness necessary? Not in the slightest. Did it feel good? Yes. Yes it did. This normally docile Crown Prince of Rosaria can now understand why someone may opt to err on the side of the brusque and gruff.]
[He stands there, hand holding his side and breathing heavily as he turns his gaze to the real Yato.]
no subject
THANK YOU~!! I thought I was gonna be stuck in there forever!
[After crushing the poor guy for a bit he finally lets go, wiping a melodramatic tear from his eye. What a ham.]
Oh yeah, I promised you a wish, right? Whatcha wanna ask for? I'll fulfill it to the best of my ability.
no subject
[Joshua does his best to hide it, though, keeping his grimace in check as Yato lets him go and hams it up.]
You’re welcome.
[That subdued, but genuine, response is the best he can manage between hefty breaths, the edge of a coughing fit, and a deep fatigue that threatens to kick out his legs from beneath him. Bonus points for the pain lancing up his side.]
[Okay. That’s something he can take care of now. Sure, the use of dreamotion is likely to drain him even further, but he can’t walk around with an open wound like that. It’s bad manners.]
[A stream of healing energy flows from his palm, flecked with tongues of flame, as he presses it against the slash along his side. The wound isn’t deep, so it doesn’t take long nor does it add significantly to his tiredness.]
[Now that that distraction is dealt with, Joshua can focus on Yato’s offer. As before, it seems sincere. At the very least, there’s no overt evidence towards an ulterior motive. That just leaves him with the conundrum of what to ask for.]
[The first thing that comes to mind is to end the affliction causing him to seek out the books that made him a target in the first place. It would solve all of his woes, and more. But does Yato possess that level of power? Even if he does, would wishing for something so selfish over the restoration of lost knowledge potentially doom anyone else who suffers or may suffer the same malady.]
[Before he gets lost too deep in the philosophical weeds, it’s probably best to gather some information.]
What is the extent of your power, friend?
[He pauses. Tired. Still slightly out of breath.]
I suppose it would be more prudent to ask first… what is your name?
no subject
[Watching Joshua with keen interest, Yato leans in with a quiet "Oooh...!" to examine how the magic is working, noting how the hints of fire are being used to aid in the healing process. How he wishes he had the ability to do something more than slash things. Something more useful and helpful than simply being someone who can fight.]
[Once he's sure Joshua isn't about to pitch over, he backs away to give the guy some space and to show that unlike his double, there's not going to be any funny business with him.]
Yato's my name. I'm a god. Of Fortune or War, depending on who you ask. My specialty is mainly fighting and severing things, but it can be used in a more unique way than it sounds. I can undo the threads that bind people together, for good and bad.
[Glancing at the damaged book, he winces.]
It... may be able to be applied to objects, too, if I try. Want me to give it a go? I might be able to restore the book that way.
[It's the least he could do, even if Joshua has another wish in mind.]
no subject
[He also doesn’t seem to be quite as surprised as one should about learning that they’ve been speaking with (and theoretically wrestling with) a god. Not quite old hat for the young prince, but also not something entirely out of the blue. At least Yato—the real Yato—is coming off as a god nicer than the other (others? does not!Yato count?) that Joshua has encountered.]
Well met, Yato. My name is Joshua.
[Joshua dips his shoulders in a bow. Not as deep as he normally would, but he’s tired. Hopefully that’s enough of an excuse for his lack of decorum.]
[The warmth in Joshua’s features, already beset by weariness, settle into a somber smile. Yato’s explanation answers his many questions succinctly. He likely won’t be able to ask for a cure. Granted, he was still waffling on whether or not he would or should, but something about having the option effectively taken away from him stings something fierce.]
[He bottles that negativity up and nods. There’s no reason to dwell on that negativity.]
If you could, I would be most grateful. The others, as well, if it is not too much to ask.
They aren’t mine, and I wish to return them, and the information inside, as intact as possible so that others can use them.
no subject
Figuring that he owes the man considerably after everything, even Yato himself, not one often given to holding with politeness on his end, returns the bow with one of his own, head dipping slightly in respect.]
Joshua. I'll remember that.
[Given how important he was treating the books earlier, it's his hope that he can at least restore them to their proper state.]
I'll do my best. Although I'm going to have to ask you to trust me. It'll require my using a blade near you-- do you think you're up for that?
[He wouldn't blame Joshua if he didn't want him anywhere near him with a weapon given the hell he was just put through. But it's the only way he can think of to potentially fix the damage incurred in the fight.]
[In the meantime, he starts gathering up the other scattered books, stacking them neatly nearby.]
no subject
[A tricky word, that.]
[Given recent events, Joshua knows, understands, and appreciates that he has every right to refuse the use of Yato’s blade around him. That his trepidation isn’t unwarranted.]
[But to shy away from uneasiness or fear is to kowtow to cowardice, and no progress can be made with such conviction. He will be staunch and steadfast as is demanded by him.]
[As Joshua leans down to gather the book he’d snatched from Yato’s mirror, his tall frame and long limbs awkwardly bending low to pick them up as carefully as he can, he considers the offer. With a hand dusting off the cover (given the state of the rest of the book, it doesn’t really do much), he hands it over.]
You trusted me to deal with your shadow. I shall trust you in return.
no subject
Alright then. All I need you to do is not move. It might look like I'm going to hit you, but I promise I won't.
[Glancing at the mirror where his double is still silently raving, Yato seems to follow a visual line back to Joshua, tracing it with his eyes as a dreamotion sword appears in his hand. The thread connecting Joshua to his mirror doppelganger - the connection he needs to sever in order to release the bonds binding them and revert them to strangers, hopefully undoing the damage done to the books in the process.
It's a fine, thin wire of fate he has to break, and he's doing it on his own for the first time, without the aid of his shinki to draw a borderline between what he wants to cut and doesn't. Perhaps he should tell Joshua the risks involved... But no, he needs to have more faith in himself as well.]
Oh, you might find yourself forgetting about that asshole-- [He jerks a thumb over to his mirror image.] --but somehow I don't think that'd necessarily be a bad thing.
[Readying his blade, he leaps into the air, almost floating down towards Joshua as he waits for the perfect moment... before slashing exactly once by his ear and landing back on the ground with the soft tap of his boots. Nothing seems to have changed, save a tiny piece of Joshua's hair comes drifting down from the cut being a little too close for comfort.
Then, steadily, the books nearby almost appear to shift in a mist, and when they're visible again there's no noticeable damage to a single one of them, being back in their original condition.]
no subject
[Literally.]
[Joshua squares his shoulders, pulling them back to an almost rigid posture. The only sign of movement comes in a gentle quake as he allows himself the softest of chuckles. Yato's right. He's not going to miss knowing that asshole.]
[It takes all Joshua has to not flinch as Yato's blade slashes near his ear. His breath hitches, but he plays it off as remnants of his fatigue, still very much pulling at him. He's definitely crashing directly into his bed when he gets home.]
[If he makes it home. He's used a lot of dreamotion today.]
[A problem for later (even if not much later). The present requires his attention. Specifically, those books piled up next to a group of mirrors, good as new.]
Oh! Thank you!
[Joshua offers Yato a wide smile, a strange contrast against his otherwise tired features, but sincere. He shoots a curious gaze towards the mirrors as he moves to collect the books.]
[There's a man housed in one of them. Yato's reflection? Odd how he seems to move on his own... or is it all a trick from the troupe has brought with them?]
[Whatever it is, he can't shake the feeling it might have something to do with whatever scuffle has him feeling so run-down.]
[He shakes his head.]
I've had enough peculiar magicks for one evening...
[The murmur is little more than a statement to himself. A promise to avoid any further trouble. One that shouldn't be hard to keep--he had no intention of getting into trouble to begin with.]
[Joshua turns again so he can bring the books over to show Yato the fruits of his labor.]
They're good as new.
no subject
[To Joshua's smile he returns it with one of his own, also glad that it seems he's been freed of the memory of having fought an evil Yato. Hopefully that means they can start off on better footing with one another without the mirror's influence. He's pretty impressed by Joshua's abilities and would like to know more.]
I don't blame you. This place gets pretty wild, huh.
[That may have been meant for only his ears, but Yato is a god after all; his hearing is pretty good. And when Joshua brings the books over, he takes the one that had been stolen from the pile, flipping through to check that all the pages are there. Thank goodness they are. None of the ones he snacked on are missing.]
Looks like it. Thanks for trusting me enough to fix them. They seemed pretty important to you. What are they about?
no subject
[Thankfully, what Yato says next exemplifies his benevolence further. He doesn’t need to thank anyone for trusting him—he’s nice enough that it’s hard not to.]
[Joshua runs a couple of fingers along the cover of one of the books.]
They’re about a type of creature called the noctaere. Have you had a chance to learn about them, yet?
no subject
No, I haven't. Are those the nightmare creatures that I heard being talked about?
no subject
They are, yes.
I've been researching their nature. There is still much we do not know about what they are capable of, nor the different ways they can interact with Dreamwalkers.
no subject
Sounds pretty ominous when you put it that way. Has there been any research into how to deal with them? Like do traditional weapons work on them or is dreamotion magic the way to go?
[If it ends up being the latter, he might have to start really putting forth some effort into learning how it works so he can help protect the people of Songerein.]
no subject
Ominous, indeed.
Dreamotion is the only way to dispatch them.
Thankfully they aren’t common, but they’re enough of a problem that we should remain vigilant.
no subject
[If it's the latter, he might be screwed against them.]
Common or not, anything that poses a threat to people is worth knowing how to combat. I have someone I need to protect.
no subject
However, for the sake of protecting your charge, I will share everything I learn with you.
