open 🌻 a relatively more welcome return and some other nonsense

Who: Zelda and OPEN
Which: Open log, backdated to November 9
Where: Plaza, Lakeside, Dreamscape
What: November catch-all kind of thing. Zelda returns to Song (again) after trying to go home and do [spoiler] things, gets leafever and experiences a day in the life of a sylvari, and dreams about fashion
Warnings: Minor Tears of the Kingdom sidequest spoilers dreamscape prompt. (opt out of TOTK spoilers here.) Threads with major TOTK spoilers will be marked.

1. a not so welcome return the redux

Like most new arrivals, Zelda awakens in the Plaza. When she opens her eyes, she sees... nothing. Darkness, muted colors, like the insides of one's eyelids. Her heart skips a beat. Has she done it? Has she finally returned to Hyrule and fulfilled the plan she has so ardently strived for? Is she free from Songerein?

As if in answer, the wind picks up and gusts over Zelda. The darkness rustles loudly all around her, like dried leaves in an autumn breeze.

...

The princess sits up abruptly, shedding leaves from the pile that has formed on top of her. Wait a moment. What are all these leaves doing on the ground? It's still summertime in Hyrule. Zelda looks around, casting her gaze over the nearby Plaza, abustle with activity as dreamwalkers patronize the many shops surrounding it. This doesn't look like the town near the castle. Then that must mean...

She's back in Songerein.

Zelda slams her hands down in the leaves and screams out a curse at the top of her lungs. Back in Songerein? Already? But she only just left! Last night, she snuck out of the treehouse home she and Link share and went to the Wishing Well. She planned to use three of her baubles to go home. Link came to stop her—

Her mind stops abruptly as the memory plays in her mind—Link, stepping between Zelda and the well, kissing her...

A hot flush rises to Zelda's cheeks. She shakes her head roughly to get the image out of her mind. Stop getting distracted. Focus!

The princess roughly digs herself out of the pile of leaves (more of which have accumulated in the mere minutes she's been sitting here) and gets to her feet. Time to go to the Plaza and get some answers.

2. dryad ailment

It's been four or five days since Zelda returned to Songerein and she's been feeling... pretty terrible, actually. Somehow, waking up in a pile of leaves in the Plaza has caused the princess to fall ill. For days, she's been laid up at home or at the clinic, suffering fevers and body aches and the worst case of dry skin anyone has every experienced. Her body has become strangely plant-like, with skin like bark and hair like yellow leaves. If not for how miserably she's been feeling, Zelda would be fascinated by the changes.

But today, she inexplicably feels... fine. No, better than fine. Wonderful, actually. The moment she steps outside and the cold autumn sunlight shines on her leafy hair, Zelda feels her miserable affliction vanish. Her lethargy fades in an instant and she suddenly feels more energized than she's felt in days—no, in months. Suddenly, all of the worries Zelda normally carries around fade from her mind and all she can think about is soaking up more sunlight, drinking clear, cold water, and finding some delicious nutrients!

Zelda can be found at the lakeside all day, romping about in a state of undress unusual for the cold weather and uncharacteristic of the princess. She might be conversing animatedly with the nearby trees, wading knee-deep in the icy lake waters, or even (ugh) eating dirt. Really, you should have a taste of this dirt. The flavor is exquisite!

3. Interactive dreamscape - Hyrulean haute couture

Intentionally or unintentionally, tonight's dreamwalking has brought you to a town on the outskirts of Hyrule known as Hateno Village. Once a sleepy little village, Hateno has grown into a bustling township in the century since the Great Calamity, on account of its distance from Hyrule Castle. In the four years since they defeated Calamity Ganon (and when they aren't busy traveling the kingdom), Zelda has lived in Hateno Village with Link. Hateno is the 'home' she thinks of whenever she hears the word, so its little wonder that a homesick dream take place there.

Lately, Hateno has been buzzing with excitement, ever since haute fashion designer Cece opened her shop there and began selling her latest designs. Fashion-forward Hyruleans from all over the kingdom have flocked to Hateno to get their own Cece-brand clothes. Though Zelda may not be a fashionista, she isn't immune to the charm of Cece's unique designs.

That's how you find yourself inside Cece's shop, trying on the hottest new style—mushroom couture. Zelda, also dressed in a full mushroom outfit, stands before you, carefully scrutinizing your outfit.

"No, I think it needs the hat," she says. "The ensemble simply isn't complete without it."

[It is perhaps unkind of him to keep his eyes fixed squarely upon her as she confesses the intent behind her disappearance, to make her bear the unflinching weight of his scarlet gaze even as she fidgets and casts her own anywhere and everywhere else. He should be softer, should reach out and still her anxious hands instead of keeping his own firmly crossed across his chest. He knows that it isn't easy for her to speak of these things, and if their positions were reversed, he would never be able to summon the courage to say anything at all.

But it hurt, to suddenly find her gone one day. And her plan infuriates him, nearly as much as knowing who exactly created the circumstances that have made her believe her sacrifice is necessary in the first place. If he were to move, if he were to speak, if he were to do anything at all but stare at her while his fingernails dig half-moon crescents into his arms, he's certain that whatever would follow would be something he'd regret. Because besides knowing how ineffective arguing would be - a princess' will is not one that can be bent so easily, as he's well aware - he also knows "Sheik" has no right to act upon the fury he feels, nor to convince her otherwise.

(Would another Princess' words have more weight? If she could speak to the "Zelda" whose fate she mirrors so closely, would that make any difference at all? But such musings are pointless, regardless; she's built up too many lies between them for her to have any credibility left in the end, certainly.)

But the topic shifts and she asks about the passage of time and the state of Reverein, the nature of her fidgeting changing from guilty to bashful for a reason that's not quite clear to him, and he... sighs, letting the tension in his muscles gradually melt away as he allows his gaze to finally fall to some indistinct point on the table. The flow of time is always cruel. Focus on the present moment; it is the only one they are guaranteed in this place.]

It has been quiet, for the most part. No major crises to speak of, as far as I am aware. There was a festival recently of the macabre variety; the fairy godmothers were once again out in force costuming the populace.

[He was reminded of the masquerade where they first met. Should he consider it a sign, that he has been masked twice over every time he has met another of their bloodline? The pause in his report is heavy with consideration.]

... It coincided with another group of dreamers awakening here. Among them was a girl, one who seems to hail from a land that has not yet become Hyrule.

[His eyes flick back up to hers.]

She calls herself "Zelda."

[The surprise is expected. As is the tempest that becomes of her mind a moment later, clear as day to one who has experienced that same storm twice over. Sheik watches her reactions closely regardless, an interest in her feelings regarding another Zelda's presence that remains no matter how he tries to smother it with duty or denial.

But he did not predict it being the era he mentions that would trip her up most of all. His head lists to the side as he recalls the conversation he had with the girl in the labyrinth, strange and circular as it was.]

... I suppose there is a possibility that she has instead come from a time where Hyrule has since ceased to exist... [Perhaps that could explain away some of her incogruencies, but... no. He shakes his head.] But I do not believe that is the case.

[Call it a gut instinct. He's relying on it quite a bit more here than he did when he first met the girl sitting across from him nearly a year and several lifetimes ago, but every time he tries to consider the alternative, it just sounds... wrong in his mind. Like the sour ringing of a bell out of tune.]

She - and her Link, she said - hail from a land she called "Skyloft," and only seemed to recognize what you or I would call Hyrule as "the surface."

[He was... a bit too preoccupied to ask what in Nayru's name she meant by that, he realizes now, and he's kind of kicking himself over it, but he also can't shake the feeling that if he had asked too many follow up questions at that time his brain would have actually exploded. He is but one overthinking pseudo-Sheikah, and honestly he's still trying to figure out what he's going to say if and when someone notices their harps are extraordinarily similar, alright.]

[He made a promise not to give up on her, and in so doing, himself as well. He promised not to mourn but to live, to find a way back, to save Hyrule and free her. And in the meantime, to be patient. To live without sorrow.

It's the hardest vow that Link has ever had to carry.

He sees the ghost of her everywhere, a flash of golden hair, a far-off star in the night sky. Following those phantoms is a constant temptation, but he knows what a foolish thought that is. He could chase visions and spirits for the rest of his life and never find her again, and then what kind of a life would that be? What sort of man would he be, to renege upon his own vow like that? So he doesn't. He tries his damndest to move on, to take things one moment at a time. It hurts, it aches, but that ache becomes duller over time. Less pronounced.

And yet...

It's a flash of blonde he sees at first, the shade familiar enough to catch his eye. But-- no, he's certain he's just seeing things. Finding familiarity he wants in the silhouette of a stranger.

But he follows anyway.

Whomever she is --for he is certain it's not Zelda, at least not his Zelda-- she is nearly swallowed by the crowd at the plaza. Nearly, but not completely, and while he keeps a respectful distance, his eyes keep track of her anyway. He knows this is a dangerous practice, at least for his own heart, but for some reason he cannot pull away.]

[It's a dangerous move, following like this. The longer he does it, the more the denial ebbs away, leaving a pool of hope welling in his chest, traitorously naive. It can't be. It can't be. And yet he thought as much before, too, the last time they united after being separated.

Reverein is full of surprises, after all. The more he tries to think he's seen it all, the more the place proves him wrong.

Link should go. Go, in this case, being the two strands of fate, opposite directions, each necessary in a different way. He should go away from this, because hope is dangerous and fickle and his heart is raw. Exposed. Fragile as glass, and daring to get his hopes up might fracture it all over again. Should go towards it because he does not like leaving the unknown to be a mystery. Because if he never confirms it, he will never know, and then he will always wonder...

The options only matter until they don't, and at present, she's turning in his direction. He finds the crowd thickening around him, particularly behind, removing his exit. He steps back into it, allowing the bustle of the square to swallow him, camouflaging him as best it can. It's a thin hiding place he's found, and people come and go, at times leaving him more exposed or less. But he has to set his heart in order, prepare himself to either be disappointed or have to face impossibility again.

At this rate, he-- he's not sure which he'd choose.]
skyglider: (when you love someone)

[The relief of anonymity sweeps over him like a wave, sure and strong, a blanket of silence descending...and it's a moment too late, or too soon, perhaps, because his eyes meet with a flicker of familiar green, and by the time it registers in his mind, knocking the air from his chest, the sea of people has swallowed him up.

Suddenly, the cacophony of silence is deafening, a trap from which he must escape--

By the time he's free again, the eyes are gone, and Link cannot describe exactly how he feels. Sad? Scared? Is that little flame of hope welling up again, preparing to burn him? ...he doesn't know, but his feet are moving before his mind registers a will to move, following as ever, the urge to press on tugging at his heart.

There is a wide gulf between what should be true, and what he can see with his own eyes. What should be is this: Zelda has returned to Hyrule and become an immortal dragon, thus sealing her fate and ensuring that he may never see her again. What seems to be true, however, is that he met the gaze of a pair of eyes that could only be hers, a gaze so familiar he could never mistake it for anyone else. Could she really be here? And in that case...has she failed?

It... it doesn't matter. Not really. Eventually, she will succeed; he has seen as much and cannot doubt that it is true. He realizes that in a way that's supposed to be comforting, but really just steals the air from his lungs again.

It doesn't matter, he thinks again, not because it isn't important but because this world is the way it is: a strange, nonsensical dream that creates its own rules as it refutes things he knows to be true. Reverein is a frustrating tangle of inconsistencies and impossibilities, and in this moment, as he dashes through the crowd on feet that no longer obey his command to stop, he finds that to be a miracle rather than a trapping. Because he sees her now, clearly, her back turned to him as it was once before, head bowed, clutching something precious against her that calls to him, weakly, faintly...

Two injured companions, one wounded, the other with an aching heart.

She disappears within the doors to the Wild Harvest, and they open a moment later, bringing with them an urgent gust of chilled wind and-- him.]

You're here, [said after the door closes once again, his voice small and shocked. He makes no move to bridge the distance between them, for now; his feet, which moved so unwillingly to bring him here, now seem to refuse any command to move.]

[It's a weird feeling, with sounds and sights that are familiar enough, but also entirely different to him. Though he never spent more time than necessary in Hylian towns while alive, there's a distinct style here that's nostalgic in a way he wouldn't expect.

For better or for worse, though, he doesn't have time to dwell on any nostalgia, not while some unknown woman is lifting his wing to take measurements and check how the fabric is folding.]

[That's certainly a hat. "hat" is absolutely a way to describe it, yep.

Much to Cece's annoyance--sorry Cece he isn't a very good model--Revali takes the hat from Zelda, scrutinizing it up close instead of just putting it on his head.]

It doesn't seem like it would stay on very well. As soon as I leave the ground, it'll end up floating away on the breeze.

[She might not, but Revali certainly does. He gives Zelda a Look, as if what she's said is by far the craziest thing he's ever heard. (It's up there, he can't lie)]

I think you're looking at this from too Hylian of a perspective, Princess.

[So when he hears a scream, he rushes to investigate, using a gust of airbending and a flick of his hand to transform his staff into its glider form, launching upwards into the air and swooping towards the location he heard the scream from.]
