[CLOSED] Don’t leave me alone at this time
Who: Joshua (
empyreanctastrophe) and Ryu (
amnesiadragon)
Which: Closed interactive dream
Where: In a small dreamscape constructed by Joshua
What: Joshua has offered to help Ryu master his transformations in a controlled environment
Warnings: As always, potential spoilers for FF16! Also fighting. Any other warnings will be added
[The wide field stretches wide between two cliffs, adorned with rolling hills and distant mountains that reach lazily for the sky. The air carries a refreshing coolness, and the vibrant green grass sways gently in an unseen breeze, dotted with flowers and clover. Look closer and one will find peculiar spots where the once-lush vegetation appears to wither and fade, a stark contrast against the overall beauty of the peaceful land of Rosaria.]
[This recreation of it, at least.]
[At the heart of the dreamscape stands Joshua, the architect of this realm. Perched atop a prominent rock, he surveys the landscape with a sense of quiet contemplation. His eyes, deep and blue as the endless sky, harbor a subtle mix of anticipation and concern. As the sun hangs ahead, casting its warm glow, he awaits Ryu’s arrival.]
[There’s purpose behind this dream. He can take solace in knowing that he has a clear goal. Still, Joshua's hands, usually steady and composed, betray a faint tremor as he contemplates the upcoming challenge. Only a couple of weeks ago, he’d semi-primed for the first time in Songerein while training with Kazuya—and that caused a cascade of problems. He vividly recalls the chaos that ensued, the unintended consequences of unimaginable power on his and Kazuya’s behalf, and a fuzzy aftermath that left him waking in his bed hours later. He was in full control of himself, but it still invited trouble.]
[Would the same thing happen here? Would his hubris cause yet another disaster? All he wants is to help a friend, but such intentions make perfect steppingstones to Hell.]
[He sucks in a deep breath. He has to believe that won’t happen here. That he can keep a handle on the situation as a whole. That if he can help Ryu now, he can prevent another similar situation from arising in the future. Besides, he planned this out. They had the contingency of dreams on their side.]
[It will be okay.]
[Joshua will make sure of it.]
[A sense of tranquility permeates the scene, interrupted only by the occasional rustle of grass or the cry of a wild chocobo (although none are present). The silence, broken by the slowly calming, rhythmic beating of Joshua's heart in his ears, resonates with the dreamscape around him. Home is a comfort, even if it’s only a façade.]
[Sometimes that’s all comfort is.]

[He isn't going to use it, but the King's Sword goes with him wherever he goes. He broke the last one, so keeping this one safe is the least he can do.]
[The grass crunches under his feet as he approaches Joshua, taking a deep breath. It's going to be okay. Joshua knows what he's doing. He doesn't have to be afraid - even if he is. He stops in front of the rock, looking up at it. ... It reminds him of the Golden Plains, but it's... much different. Maybe he'll ask Joshua about this place later.]
... I hope you've slept well so far.
no subject
I have, thank you. I hope you've rested, as well.
[With a welcoming wave of his hand, Joshua motions for Ryu to join him on the rock.]
Take a few moments, my friend. Feel the cool breeze, hear the rustle of the grass beneath your feet. This place is yours as much as it is mine.
[He continues, his voice carrying its usual calm reassurance.]
We have time. When you're ready, we can begin.
no subject
... You may have to hurt me. You probably will, honestly.
[The idea doesn't thrill him, but he has to let the other know.]
When I'm in that form... I don't stop until I'm made to stop.
no subject
When you inherit power such as ours, it is inevitable that you will hurt someone with it.
I don't wish to cause you any harm, Ryu, but I will do what I must.
[He places a hand on Ryu's shoulder.]
That isn't a threat. It's a reassurance that I will help keep you under control if necessary.
no subject
[He closes his eyes, breathing in the scent of the wind. It's so quiet... so natural. He misses this kind of silence, where there's no sounds of villages or towns and just the wide open world.]
I trust you.
[Three simple words, but... there's a lot of meaning behind them. Sure, he likes and trusts pretty much everyone he meets... but this is a different kind of trust. He's putting his life in Joshua's hands, even if this is just a dream. But he knows Joshua won't do something terrible with it - he's proven over and over again to be a good person, a kind soul. He deserves trust and honesty. He's a friend and a guide and someone to look up to.]
[And at the same time, he's still afraid. Hesitantly he stands and opens his eyes, taking his friend's hand in his own and covering it with his other hand.]
... Be safe. No matter what. Once I do this, I won't be able to respond.
[He hops down off the rock and starts walking a short distance away. He feels shaky, but that's partially his mind starting to draw up the memories that he's going to focus on in a few moments.]
... Tell me when you're ready.
no subject
[It may be foolhardy to rush into another sparring match so soon after he'd barely avoided disaster with Kazuya, let alone one that is dangerous by design, but he made a promise.]
[And he needs to know for himself what his own limits are. Where does he stand amidst his peers? His curiosity demands answers, and his practicality demands those answers be put to use--whether it be to improve upon his skills even more, or to make himself useful in accordance with his abilities.]
[He slides from his perch, boots gently landing in the grass before he strides to where he's facing opposite of Ryu. He plants both feet firmly on the ground, ready to move as needed.]
[Another deep breath. He can feel Phoenix standing at alert in the back of his mind, more a gentle reminder than an overbearing presence. He won't call upon his Eikon's power just yet. Last resort, only.]
[Well... second to last resort. He has no idea what would happen if he were to prime fully, even in a dream.]
I'm ready.
no subject
[He lifts his head and lets out a yell, blue light surrounding him as he skips right past his hybrid form into full Kaiser form. It bursts through the light, its large head turning and shifting to try to find its target -]
[- there. A single form on the field. Even though it's not sure what it has done, the sight of a target is enough to throw it into a frenzy, rushing forward to barrel down on the young man and swipe at him with a large talon.]
no subject
[He did, quite literally, ask for this.]
[Although Ryu's Kaiser form is bigger and undoubtedly stronger than the standard aevis, Joshua still figures he can use the experience gathered through his brother's hunts. He'll just have to scale appropriately.]
[Pun intended.]
[His sharp eyes track and wait for that swipe to nearly land before leaping back, flames gathering around his legs as he pushes off the ground and lands a few feet away.]
[It's doubtful that Ryu will have wrested control already. Even more doubtful that he'll be able to do so if Joshua's first instinct is to retaliate. He calls out instead, hoping his voice can serve as an anchor.]
[He doesn't expect it to work right away, but the sooner he can build a foundation, the better.]
I'm not your enemy!
no subject
[The emotion is strong enough that the temperature around them seems to rise slightly, the breeze turning a little dryer.]
[And it gets hotter still as the creature lifts up a claw and tosses a ball of flames directly at Joshua. Ryu would know better than to try to fight fire with fire. This creature... not so much.]
no subject
[So far, so good.]
[For a certain definition of 'good'.]
[He needs to be careful. Too much defensive technique, and Joshua runs the risk of inviting stronger attack. Too much offense, however, could provoke Kaiser into a frenzy.]
[Then again, from what Ryu has said, little won't provoke him.]
[He'll allow for a little bit more time before fighting back. If his shield held up for this first attack, he can take another.]
Ryu! I know you're in there!
no subject
[Ryu, for his part, does his best to stem the tide of emotion. It's difficult, though - it's hard to even hold on to who he is against the torrent of anger and righteous fury. He 's barely clinging to lucidity, grabbing onto it as if it were a rock in a raging river.]
[His head is above water - for now. But his grip is slowly slipping, and he risks disappearing into the stream of emotions. And if he does... will he still be him? Will he even exist? It's difficult to wrestle with the questions as he does his best to push back the anger.]
no subject
[Joshua reinforces his defenses against the chunks of earth slamming against them. He was alright with the initial offense, but too much more of this pressure will result in a broken barrier.]
[He waits for a brief space between strikes before he shoots backwards, propelled by flame, until he's just out of reach of Kaiser's magic. With the fire still surrounding him, Joshua taps into his dreamotion, recounting the name of a familiar magick that he knows to be tried and true.]
Firaga!
[With that cry, Joshua lets loose a burst of fire. It's not enough to cause any serious harm to a creature as large and formidable as Ryu's current form, but he's hoping to distract more than harm.]
[Although that may have to change soon.]
no subject
[The barrier is irritating, and it has just enough awareness to know that attacking with wind is only going to cause a larger explosion. If it had the elements it was weaker against, it might have an easier time. But it doesn't, and it doesn't even think that distinctly in those terms. It knows fire isn't working and it's too fast for earth.]
[Maybe it should use -]
[It pauses for a moment, as the mere thought of using its ultimate attack puts Ryu into sheer panic mode. He fights and kicks and tries to claw his way to the surface, but the fear of hurting Joshua is too easily absorbed into the anger he's trying to fight against. The dragon huffs and shakes its head before unfolding its wings.]
[It takes to the sky, hovering above its foe, starting to gather energy in front of its mouth in what might be a somewhat terrifyingly familiar sight for Joshua. It certainly feels like a great deal of power it's gathering.]
no subject
Dragons.
[Joshua reminds himself that this is his dream, and he has some amount of control over it. Not as much as he would like, but control nonetheless. In the time that it takes for Kaiser to begin his charge, Joshua reaches for Phoenix, always ready to lend him its power, and immediately he's engulfed with the comfort of flames.]
[This is the second time he's semi-primed, but the first time in a dream. With how poorly his first experience went, he can't help that twinge of unease that tugs at his heart.]
[He'll have to get over it. He has only seconds to act, and regardless of his and Ryu's initial intent, this is a battlefield. He must treat it as one.]
Stop right there!
[With long crimson feathers dotted with brilliant blue and green trailing behind him, Joshua launches himself into the air, calling upon the fabric of his dream to bend and shore up the lift he needs to meet Kaiser where it's at--]
[He takes a moment to inwardly acknowledge how unfathomably stupid this idea is.]
[--and grab onto its shoulder scales.]
no subject
[Wherever they hit they dig into the ground for several feet, blasting away earth and vegetation around them. Instead of a wounded or killed target it instead has an insect clinging to it - and not enough dexterity to shove it off with a claw. So instead it roars, shaking the area with sound as it starts to dash and shake its shoulders, trying to get this thing off of it.]
[Inside, Ryu is faintly aware Joshua is alive - but not much more. The adrenaline and fear are running far too high for him to be able to have any kind of rational thought at the moment, but at least he doesn't have that guilt. At least there's something.]
no subject
[He still has no clue what his next step is. All he can do is flinch and cling harder to this monster as it roars and tries to shake him off. He catches the paths of colors his feathers leave behind as they wave along with each shake.]
Ryu!
[Joshua calls for his friend again, his voice reverberating with Phoenix's presence melded with his body.]
[Then, another idea strikes. Driven by desperation, perhaps, but far more solid than the impulsive tackle.]
[He calls upon his dreamotion, amplified by his semi-primed state. There's nothing to heal here, not physically, but the concept is the same. As he struggles to find purchase amid leathery skin and scales, he taps into the unique tranquility that comes with his synergic existence with his Eikon. The comfort of knowing that Phoenix, its consciousness perfectly intertwined with Joshua's, will never leave him.]
[It's that very same comfort that he tries to spread to Ryu through Kaiser, his hands glowing with life and magic. Perhaps it will be enough to calm the dragon's instinct to where Ryu can take over.]
no subject
[No. No it will not bow to this broken shard of a creature. It will not listen to this weak, pitiful being. It's not earned the respect, it's not earned obedience. The Kaiser doesn't mean to, but given that it's Joshua's dream the feeling it's giving off isn't all that difficult to discern.]
[Ryu is barely hanging on, tired of struggling and tired of fighting. He's mentally slumped over, trying to fight against what he's being swept away in but oddly resigned to it. He feels the strange peace and lifts his head. ... Coexistence? With something like this? Joshua did say that he needed to not be afraid... but it's so hard.]
no subject
[After one particularly nasty jolt, Joshua borrows some of Phoenix's power to use the momentum to help push himself over Kaiser's shoulder where he can flop unceremoniously onto his back. He catches the impression that the dragon doesn't wish to answer to anyone, but, frankly, Joshua doesn't care. This needs to end, and Ryu needs the support.]
[He isn't one to force hands, not with the brute force he's seen others employ, but Joshua has mediated plenty of negotiations. All he has to do is see this as the same. He grabs one of Kaiser's horns, palms infused with dreamotion that carries the same sentiments he'd harbored moments ago, shared and supported by his Eikon.]
Heed my magicks, Dragon. They speak of the potential you both hold.
cw: dead children
horsewhelkchocobo, rearing up and taking to the sky to try to throw Joshua off. Its response to the dreamotion is to send back two pictures - a man's face and the image of a child behind him.][It's tinged with despair and hatred and absolute righteous fury. How could that man do something like that? How disturbed are mortals if they can do something like that? Better to kill rather than watch them become even more depraved. Better to carry out its duty. Better to keep them from hurting each other. It knows how much it hurts Ryu - but it also is him. Not an outside force - this is his own power. No one else can control it. He is a god, and if he keeps wanting to pretend it's not him destroying things, that's his own fault.]
[All of that, in a moment of time - they are in a dream, after all. The Kaiser dives to try to shake Joshua off. It growls and spins, trying to slam its back into the ground to get rid of this insect. A powerful one, yes - but still a mortal, still an insect.]
cw: dead children
[He knows all too well, because he'd been there.]
[Kaiser's despair bleeds into Joshua's emotions, calling forth a vivid memory.]
[He's ten years old, laying on the ground, defeated by a beast of an Eikon unknown until that day. As he's sure he's taking his last breath, he's enrobed in an incredible warmth, one he assumes to be a call from the other side. He hadn't been entirely wrong. Phoenix's embrace, ethereal and otherworldly as it rose from the dead, gently lulled him into a healing sleep that night. A sleep that lasted for the next few years.]
[In the present, Joshua tries to convey how that partnership with Phoenix saved him. How if Kaiser and Ryu were to work together, they could do the same. For every child who lost their life in that village, they could save a hundred.]
[He would say more, but Kaiser clearly has other ideas. When it slams into the ground, Joshua loses his grip and is launched across the grass. In his semi-primed state, he's able to quickly call upon a weak barrier to shield him from the hardest strikes, but the impact it still enough to wind him, a tangled mess of flames and feathers.]
[Joshua lays there prone for a few moments before he struggles to rise to his feet.]
no subject
[Kaiser gets down close to Joshua, huffing. At least its breath doesn't stink, but it's definitely not pleasant. With an annoyed grunt it turns, likely clipping Joshua with its tail, and starts walking off.]
[... Not too far though, as there's no more than a blink before Ryu falls to the ground in a heap.]
no subject
That was unnecessary.
[Annoyance shifts quickly to concern when Kaiser disappears and leaves someone far less abrasive in its wake. The stumble turns into a hurried dash, feathers still trailing behind him, as he rushes his friend’s side, concern etched across his features as he checks for any injuries.]
Ryu, speak to me.
no subject
You're warm...
[Astute observation, Ryu. But he tries to touch Joshua's cheek gently.]
... I'm sorry. It... I hurt you.
no subject
[In the interim, Phoenix’s healing flames easily patch up Joshua’s bruises. So when Ryu awakens there is little left to show.]
[All the better to show how sincere Joshua’s chuckle is. The sound is equally eerie and light as his voice continues to echo with the raw power of tapping into his Eikon.]
I am warm, indeed.
[As Ryu rests his hand on his cheek, Joshua places his own so he can hold it in a gentle grip.]
And yet, I’m still here.
[Still alive, and still happily Ryu’s friend.]
[His eyes slowly lose their darkened hue, and the splendor of Phoenix’s plumage retreats until he is only Joshua once more.]
[It’s then that the weight of fatigue hits him, and beneath his palm, Ryu may feel Joshua fight off his body’s resultant shudder, but he remains upright and ready to help his friend.]
Are you hurt?
no subject
I'm okay. Just tired...
[He pulls himself to a better sitting position and puts an arm around Joshua to help keep him upright.]
That was... Phoenix? Like my hybrid form, though...
[There's definitely something there, behind the young man that is his friend. Something older and stronger... but Joshua is plenty strong himself.]
I'm okay. It's... my forms takes the damage for me, if that makes sense? Just... takes some energy from me.
no subject
It makes sense.
As you can see, I experience the same.
[He gives a weak smile, but not one devoid of warmth or humor.]
To answer your question, you're right. That was Phoenix. Although it isn't the extent that I can call upon its power.
[If he'd primed all the way, that could've been bad.]
I'm glad I didn't hurt you.
no subject
I... I was really afraid that I was going to. You... I know you knew the danger, it's just...
[He hugs the other a little awkwardly from the side, but the intent is there.]
If you need to, though... call on your power. Don't worry about hurting me. I trust that you won't, anyway.
[He trusts Joshua entirely. There's a connection there, strong and solid.]
I was a little surprised... you think really well on your feet. I know you can fight, but... most people can't fight like that. Even without your power, I mean.
no subject
If you believe I am talented, then you should see my brother.
He is the warrior between the two of us. By far.
no subject
You shouldn't compare yourself to your brother like that. You're really strong. You should be proud of what you can do.
... Nina does that sometimes. She worries that her sister's better than her. I think she's worried she might be overshadowed by her when we rescue her. But that's not true.
no subject
Forgive me, I should have been more clear. I'm proud of my brother and his accomplishments.
[With how his face lights up, it's clear how much Joshua loves Clive.]
We may be two very different people, but he's someone who I strive every day to emulate.
That said, I'm sorry for your friend's worry. It cannot be easy to feel such pressure.
no subject
... You deserve that. You deserve to be celebrated and admired too.
[He nods seriously. He wants Joshua to be proud of what he can do.]
no subject
[It isn't that Joshua is an insecure man. He knows how powerful he is, he is confident in his skills, and he's humble enough to understand these are not talents to take for granted.]
[Still, Ryu's words make his heart stir. Acknowledgement--genuine, pure praise without any ulterior motive--has a funny way of making even the most self-assured individuals feel valued.]
[Joshua begins to lean back. He makes sure not to move too far away from Ryu, just in case he's still needed.]
Now, let us stand you on your feet.
no subject
... If you want, we can still practice some - not with our other forms, just like this. ... Though I'd understand if you want the muscle memory rather than doing it in a dream.
Or we could just talk. Or just sit and watch the world.
no subject
[With that in mind, he considers Ryu's suggestions carefully.]
I've had my fill of practice for the evening.
[Joshua smiles, but there's no minor undercurrent of truth to his answer.]
More importantly, do you feel that it helped you?
no subject
[Hm. He does have some things on him, but this is a dream so he's not sure if healing herbs would work.]
... You're a good teacher. I'm not sure I would be able to do this alone.
no subject
[He'll take the compliment, though.]
We should consider another session somewhere down the line after we've both had time to reflect.
no subject
I think that would be helpful. I just... I don't know. I'm not... fully conscious when I'm in there.
That might be a place to start. If I can stay conscious, maybe I can take control.
[Then again it'd mean he'd have to fully experience the horrors he commits while in that form.]
no subject
Then we shall make that our next goal.
Hopefully Kaiser will not hold a grudge against me.
no subject
[Since it is him, just a part of his power.]
And you're not the sort of person to do something horrible, so there's nothing to worry about.
I'm just... glad you're on my... side...
[Ugh, he's tired. He leans into Joshua and takes a long, slow breath.]
no subject
[Rosaria is known for its flowers. Joshua had always loved that, amongst other things, about his country. The already colorful patches dotting the landscape grow in their vibrancy with the swell in his heart.]
[Joshua reaches up so he can rest a hand on Ryu's head and give his hair a short ruffle. That's what his brother would do.]
And I, yours.
[He pulls his hand away and rests it on Ryu's shoulder.]
But I would be a poor ally--and an even poorer friend--if I allowed you to continue as you are.
Go rest, Ryu. I will see you tomorrow.
