[Semi-Open] Oh, would you look at that. It's Joshua Day.
Who: FF16s and anyone who has positive CR with Joshua is invited (friends of friends can also drop by!)
Which: Semi-Open Log
Where: Starflower Cafe!
When: Backdated to March 25th
What: Once upon a time, some people looked at a baby and said, "You are Joshua." Today, we celebrate the 29th anniversary of that occasion.
Warnings: None!
It's early evening, and the golden hour sun shines gently through the windows of the Starflower Cafe. There's a modest array of red, white, and black decorations strung from the roof and set upon the tables to catch the flickering flames of lantern centrepieces, but the overall ambience is simple and warm, reminiscent of Rosarian hospitality.
Clive and Jill extended invitations earlier in the week, emphasising that the celebration is a surprise for Joshua. Guests are encouraged to arrive early, whereupon Jill will guide them not into hiding, per se, but at least to places where they can't be spotted through the windows. Meanwhile, Clive will be escorting Joshua to the party under the pretence of treating him to a name day dinner.
As such, guests are also encouraged to surprise some JOY into Mister Phoenix Boy when the brothers arrive.
Once the excitement of the surprise subsides, all guests will receive a softly glowing phoenix feather imbued with healing dreamotion. Joshua is handing them out personally as tokens of gratitude, so come and get yours!
Early mingling will happen over the appetizer buffet, which features potato croquettes, charcuterie boards with a heavy emphasis on cheese, various veggie platters with dips, and small cups of ice cream. Or, guests can sit down and chat over dinner: a roast with all the fixings.
After dinner, everyone will be escorted outside to where a bonfire has been set up. There, guests can enjoy roasting marshmallows, s'mores, and other sweet treats over the fire while watching a fireworks show to end the night.
TL;DR it's a party. So, like, party y'all.
(Clive and Jill will be around, but they'll be busy ensuring everything goes off without a hitch, so they won't be interacting much. Please feel free to assume that introductions have happened & that everyone present has been invited to their wedding, where they will be much more present!)

ahhhHHHHH that'd be too cute
[Thankfully, Joshua isn't one to judge such things. He's far too busy brimming with happiness and gratitude to take much notice, anyway. So much so that he takes the opportunity to pull Yato in for a proper hug, using that clasp on his shoulder as his invitation.]
[He squeezes his god-friend tightly (if a bit awkwardly) before pulling away.]
Twenty-nine, yes.
As for your invitation, you can thank my brother and future sister-in-law. I had little to do with any of of the planning.
#threadgoals
[This is why he loves ya, Joshua! No snide remarks or eyerolls here! Just plain good ol' happy feelings and hugs, which Yato is a big fan of. Prepare to be smooshed hard, boy. He even works in a friendly hair ruffle because he's surprisingly dad-like in that manner. No awkwardness here on his part; he's used to picking up new people as family. It comes with the territory of being a god.]
Hah! I thought so!
I'll be sure to do that, then. Parties are always fun, especially when they're a celebration for a friend. [Reaching in his jacket, he pulls out a stupidly decorated party hat with pompom, streamers, and fur trim and eyes Joshua with a grin.]
Bend down here, birthday boy.
[He's only 5'8", you giant.]
no subject
[Joshua takes the squeeze and the ruffle in stride, and his smile widens at Yato's infectious enthusiasm. He casts a quick glance towards his brother in another part of the room, and the smile softens into fondness.]
Please do. He could use a few friends, himself.
[He has to get Clive a social group, somehow!]
[Joshua turns his gaze back at Yato just in time to catch him reaching into his jacket and pulling out an actual monstrosity of a party hat. His initial excitement falters slightly. He's not one for attention or being the center of it all (current events, aside), but he knows Yato means well. Reluctantly, he bends down, his tall frame making it a bit awkward as he crouches to accommodate the gesture.]
All right. But only this once.
[His cheeks are bright pink and he's holding back a sigh, but truth be told, he's grateful for the effort Yato is putting into making sure this is a memorable moment.]
no subject
[For his part, Yato is quick to follow Joshua's gaze to his sibling, an understanding smile playing at his lips. He may not have a brother or sister in the strictest sense, but he does know how close they can be.]
Consider it done. It can be a free birthday wish, heh.
[Besides, he's always game for trying to drum up more followers/friends!]
[But sorry, Josh. This is the price of being friends with a (ridiculously childish) god: suffering his divine enthusiasm for all things fun. He doesn't hold back when it comes to anything, and parties are no exception. It's all meant in good humor, though - no intent to humiliate or embarrass here. It's why Yato is all smiles as he slips the hat onto Joshua's head, making sure the strap is adjusted comfortably before stepping back to admire his handiwork. Perfect.]
Atta boy! You're only twenty-nine once, y'know! Gotta make it a special occasion!
[Even if it'd be plenty special without his interference...]
So what are you hoping to get for presents this year, hmm? Need anything in particular?
no subject
[Quick, someone better grab a picture of this
giantnon-bite sized goober grinning madly in his funny birthday hat!][Although Yato's question isn't one that's (presumably) meant to draw a philosophical pause from Joshua, that's exactly what it does. He takes a second to scan the room, his eyes resting on everyone who's popped up to celebrate the first name day party he's had..... in far too long.]
[He sighs happily.]
To be honest, part of me didn't expect to see twenty-nine.
[He'd been preparing for that morbid possibility since he was a child.]
That alone is a gift. Having everyone here... you, my other friends ['friends' brings a flutter to his chest], my brother and sister... that is nothing short of a miracle. I couldn't ask for anything more.
no subject
Even if technically Joshua hasn't been a kid for quite a while.][Have no fear--! That's exactly what Yato does, whipping a camera from within what must be the godly hammerspace that is his jacket before snapping several quick pics with only a warning of "Cheese!"]
[It certainly wasn't asked with that intention, no, but he's always up for deeper conversations when the situation calls for it. It's a good way to get to know people better, and he's keen on learning more about his friends. So while Joshua thinks over the matter, he waits patiently.]
[When the answer finally comes, he's taken somewhat aback. The surprise is evident in both his voice and expression.]
...really? That young?
[Truthfully, he doesn't know much about Joshua's past. Though now's as good a time as any to learn, should he care to share those details with him. If not, well. It can wait for another time.]
So you were expecting death sooner than this, huh...? Whatever the case, I'm glad you made it this far. You deserve this much and more, Joshua.
no subject
[It’s a stark contrast to the conversation that follows, and Joshua does his best to mitigate that whiplash. The gentle, happy smile remains on his face, despite the subject. Hard as it is, he’s been trying to open up more. He owes that much to Jill, his sister, and her strong and swift influence.]
I was a sickly child. Although no one stated anything in my presence nor to me directly, castle walls are built with whispers. As an adult, my lifestyle does not allow for much reprieve against ailment.
[It’s not easy journeying around the world to save it. It’s even more difficult when you need to give up parts of yourself to see it through.]
Be that as it may, I am happy to have made it this far, as well. Regardless of what transpires here or back in my home realm, I will cherish this moment forever.
Thank you, Yato, for making it all the more special.
no subject
[Lowering the camera back down as they talk, Yato's face falls as the discussion turns serious. He wouldn't have thought the kid had much wrong with him except for perhaps being a bit out of practice with swordplay. To know that he was pushing a sick young man harder than he probably should have... Guilt wells up and he bites his lip, thinking about whether or not to apologize. It couldn't hurt, but he also doesn't want to make things even more awkward.]
I see... For what it's worth, it doesn't show much. You're a damn strong guy, and resilient, too. I'm really impressed with how you don't let that get you down - not everybody could handle it with the same grace and fortitude.
[From now on, he's definitely going to make sure Joshua rests more often during training. Drinks more water. Eats more. He may not be one of his shinki, but he still feels a responsibility towards the kid. That's why he allows a smile to come back to his face along with a nod. This is a happy occasion!]
Hey, you're totally welcome! And here's to an assload of happy times, yeah? You definitely deserve them and much more. If you ever need anything or have any wishes you want fulfilled, you know where to find me!
Now how about opening your present, huh? I wanna see what you think!
[He gets behind Joshua in order to gently shove him towards the overly large package. Go on! Go for it!]
no subject
[As Yato nudges him towards the giant gift, Joshua chuckles softly, excitement bubbling within him. With careful hands, he begins to peel away the wrapping paper, taking time to savor the anticipation of what lies within.]
[A lot of time.]
[He's being very thorough.]
[As Joshua works, he glances over at his friend again.]
I noticed that you seemed apprehensive when I mentioned my illness. Pray do not worry about me.
[Another slllloooowwww peeling away of paper.]
In this world, I am physically fine. Far better than in my home realm.
no subject
[...Joshua.]
[Joshua plz.]
[You're tormenting him here.]
[Because Yato's practically bouncing with glee, like he's the one receiving a present rather than it being the other way around. Gods (Yato) are very strange beings at times.]
How can I not after hearing that? But if you really are okay here, then... I suppose I won't fret too much. How's that?
[His smile reaches his eyes, warm and compassionate for the guy he's only know for less than a year. He really does get attached too easily. He's not even bothered by the agonizing pace at which Joshua is unwrapping his present.]
So this place really is a blessing for you, huh. I'm... glad you're getting this opportunity, then.
no subject
[Slowly but surely, Joshua uncovers more and more of the bookcase. Enough that he’s able to put together exactly what it is—and when he does, his original snail’s pace quickens to something a little livelier. He’s still careful, but there’s less precision and more deftness to his work.]
[Joshua glances back at Yato, and the warmth in his eyes matches the god’s.]
If I am to trust anyone’s word on what a blessing is, it would be the word of a benevolent god’s.
[That warmth turns into a boyish grin, framed appropriately by Joshua’s youthful features.]
Therefore, if you say it is a blessing, then I can only agree. Wholeheartedly, at that.
That is to say, I’m glad as well. Grateful. Indebted, perhaps.
With all this world has granted me, with all the friends I’ve made, I am not keen on leaving just yet. Not until I can ensure I’ve made enough of a difference.
[He stops unwrapping (come on, man!!!) so he can give Yato his full attention.]
I hope I’ve been of such service to you thus far.
no subject
[That's probably why as Joshua picks up the pace he begins bouncing in place, hands clenched into eager fists. What's he think of it, huh? Huh?!]
You bet you can! A god's word is law. ☆
[It's said in a joking, slightly self-deprecating manner. He did once believe that to be the case but has since learned it's immensely wrong. Gods are just as fallible as any other being, human or not, and need to be held to as strict standards, if not more so due to their strength and power.]
Then here's to hoping you remain here for a good long while, able to not only enjoy the bounty of happiness this place offers but able to return the favor by bettering it as well.
[HUFF!! YOU'RE KILLING HIM HERE, JOSH. All the same, he doesn't seem to really mind, lowering his hands to his sides with a nod.]
You definitely have. I've become a better person myself thanks to you, along with continuing to be able to find a purpose here. It's been rewarding being sparring partners on top of friends.
no subject
[Which adds to the ever growing list of reasons he’s thankful to be here. That reminder makes him nod vehemently. He’ll enjoy what this world of dreams has to offer for as long as he possibly can. Especially if it means he can make more of a difference for his friends.]
A better person?
Mayhap having to correct my bladework is teaching you patience? Or are my long-winded dreamotion lectures teaching you focus?
[Someone’s got jokes.]
[…and maybe the whole “teaching patience” thing is putting a new light on his stupid long unwrapping session???]
no subject
[Grinning at Joshua's smartass remarks, he nudges him gently. Perhaps more gently than is necessary, but now that he knows the guy is sickly, he plans on being more careful with him. It wouldn't do to have his brother and new bride kicking his ass for overexerting him.]
You're spot-on on both accounts! Also seeing you be such an upstanding person is a reminder that I should probably strive to do better myself.
[Because he definitely has flaws, he knows. They're many and varied, and not at all an insignificant part of him. Maybe that's why it almost feels like Joshua is taking a dig at his growing restlessness by taking his time with the unwrapping. But!! It's his birthday so Yato is going to be the most patient gift-giver in existence if he has to.]
[If this is a battle of wills, he's going to at least tie!]
no subject
[He goes back to diligently peeling away the wrapping, and most of the bookcase has finally been revealed, but he pauses. This time, it’s less a fun little gag and more poignant. Joshua is giving Yato his due attention.]
I could say the same for you.
It’s inspiring, the way you give you all to the people you care about, and it’s clear you’ve left your impact on them because of it.
[His conversations with Hiyori come to mind.]
I wish to do the same.
no subject
Noticing the shift in atmosphere, Yato settles down somewhat himself. His joviality and mirth are still there, just more subdued to match Joshua's respectful tone. Though there's also a bit of uncertainty in his voice.]
Yeah...? You really think so?
[Sometimes he can't help but feel like a forgettable god - and person.]
I have no doubt you already do, though, with your kindness and compassion.
no subject
[Instead, he gives a reassuring smile.]
I do think so, yes. In earnest.
And if I am to allow you to believe in my own virtues, then I think it only fair you allow me to believe in yours.
no subject
You make a fine point, I gotta admit. If you can't trust your friends' judgment, then who can you trust, right?
[Grinning, he gives him a gentle nudge. So close to unwrapping it--!]
I hope you'll enjoy this. It's not much special, but I figured something practical would make up for our first meeting.
no subject
Beautiful.
[He re-approaches the bookcase so he can trace the chocobo pattern motif with a discerning gaze and deft fingertips.]
One thing is certain—I can trust your taste in presents, and this is more than enough to make up for our first meeting.
[He still hasn’t opened the gag gift, so there’s plenty of time to take that back, but we’ll enjoy the moment for what it is for now.]
[Which includes another hug.]
Thank you.
no subject
yearsseconds for this moment! Before Joshua can even utter a word, his expression tells all, revealing to Yato his approval and thus earning him a bright smile in return.]Hehe, glad you like it.
[Tucking both hands into his pockets, he comes up beside Joshua to watch him take in the details he spent so long on. It wasn't easy trying to sneak in to study his chocobo pal without anybody noticing.]
That's what I was hoping to hear! I know we didn't exactly get started on the right foot, so I've been thinking of a way to apologize more sincerely for the hassle and damage I caused back then.
[The hug takes him a bit by surprise, but as one who never turns down affection of any sort, he quickly embraces his friend in return, patting him on the back.]
I hope you'll continue to live a long and happy, healthy life, Joshua. That's my wish to you as both a friend and god.
no subject
[Joshua eventually pulls away from the hug, but he keeps his hands firmly on Yato's shoulders. Still grinning wide, he shakes his head. When he speaks again, the emotion is palpable in his voice. Look carefully, and Yato might see he's a little misty-eyed.]
Further apology was unnecessary--but 'tis appreciated, and I daresay your gift is made all the lovelier for it.
[Oh, wait, with that wish, Joshua needs to take one of his hands back to dab at an eye. He'll turn his head for just a moment to save himself some dignity.]
I suppose I'll have to follow your example and see your wish through.
no subject
[Those hands remaining on him are a very welcome sign of their friendship, and Yato himself claps a hand on Joshua's shoulder to reciprocate. Joshua is as fine a human being as there ever was, and he's glad to be able to celebrate his coming into this world together with him. As someone who never had his birth acknowledged like this, it's a fun event to participate in.]
Heh, never let it be said a god forgets his debts. At least not this one. Besides, knowing you, a bit of extra space for books wouldn't go amiss.
[Thankfully, in a surprise bit of social grace, Yato doesn't call any attention to Joshua's momentary lapse of composure aside from a gentle friendly nudge meant to reassure him.]
Please do. I know there's a lot of people who would be heartbroken otherwise, with me among them.
no subject
[Pulling back, Joshua clears his throat and gets his emotions in check. As best he can, at least. It's hard, but, oddly enough, not for any bad reason. Which may, in fact, be worse. Damn those good intentions!]
[Once he's good (and it thankfully doesn't take long), he acknowledges Yato with a determined nod.]
You have my word.
[And he doesn't intend on breaking it.]
