1. Suddenly snow

Does everything have to be so cold? I can feel my arms and legs shivering. It's a good thing this sweater is warm.

[Nier ventures out into the town and everything is covered in snow. Everything!! This is unusual even for him. He's not used to seeing this type of weather, but he's trying his best to not let it bother him. Instead, he approaches you and waves with a polite gesture. Just like everyone else he's wearing one of those ugly sweaters. ]

The more I stay still the more I freeze. I don't know about you, but I can't stand still like this. Does your outfit keep you warm at all? If not we should probably do something about that.

2. Ice fishing

[Nier might not know too much about winter customs and traditions but there's something he excels in - fishing. He's carrying a giant bucket filled with fish flopping in and about. They're now staring at you with a dead look in their eyes.]

Hey, take a look at this fish. I caught them a little while ago, but I don't really know what they're called. Do you have any idea?

[It doesn't look like any fish from his world. It's very colorful and almost glowing. What kind of fish are they anyway?]

3. Rogue snowmen

[Maybe you're just minding your own business. Maybe you're enjoying the snow and the festive season. Either way, you might suddenly find yourself being pelted by snowballs. The rogue snowmen are on the loose again. Nier had a moment of frustration when he was dealing with the snowmen he thought it would be better to dispose of them. That only made it worse and now there's so many rogue snowman who are here to cause problems.]

Look out!!! What's with these guys? They won't give up.

[Nier tries to fight off the snowmen, but it looks like he could use some help.]

I dunno. I mean, I'd find it weird to have a winter without snow...

[Zidane stands in his own sweater, tail swinging behind him, looking quite okay with the weather and cold. Still, he'd probably be in his house instead of out if he didn't need to do some shopping.]

We could get something warm to drink. That might help you.

Are you used to this sort of weather? I didn't see much of this before back in my world. It's new to me.

[ Nier isn't sure how he feels about snow just yet. On one hand, it's nice to look at and scenery is interesting when everything turns white. On the other hand, it seems like he's freezing and on the brink of turning to ice.]

I'd like that a lot, actually. A warm drink and something to fill our stomachs. Coffee might be nice.

I mean, it comes around in time every year. You don't get snow in our world though?

[Though, he'd get it if the guy lives in a desert, or somewhere like Burmecia. In general, places that just didn't see snow.]

Coffee would be nice... and a change up from tea. Still, let's go check Dreambucks. Maybe they have something new.

No, I don't get that where I used to come from.

[ He shakes his head once. ]

I've been to Dreambucks so we can go there together easily. It's not too far from here. Let's go!

That's too bad, but hey, think of it this way. If you've only heard of it before, now you can learn more about it.

[IE, it's time for a snowball fight... but he doesn't have to know that yet.]

Alright, lead the way!

And we're off! What's your name by the way? I'm Nier.

[ He offers a brief smile and nod of acknowledgement before he continues to walk onwards. ]

I don't think I've met you before.

[ It's an unfamiliar face but Zidane seems friendly and nice. ]

Name's Zidane. Nice to meet you, Nier!

[He grins back.]

Eh, I have a habit of not sticking to one place. And since I have Boco and Roost, we end up in the Wildlands pretty often. I should start paying attention to the journal and crystals regularly, but that latter one kinda seems invasive.

It's nice to meet you too, Zidane!

[ He finds himself nodding in agreement before he even thinks about it. ]

Oh yeah, the journals can be useful. I've used it a few times and learned valuable information that way. I suppose we just have to do what we can to get by. I hope everything's okay with you.

Oh yeah, things have been fine. Though, I should check in with someone.

[Juuust to make sure she's getting along... a bit.]

How've you been adapting to this place? Not too bad I hope.

It's been a little rough but I'm managing because everyone's so nice.

[ Adjusting to this place has its share of difficulties. He's still trying to figure out what's going on. It's not easy but it's also not unbearable. ]

You're friendly too! Has anyone told you that before?

That's good. And yeah! Everyone's been pretty nice here.

[But he hasn't met everyone just yet either... and then Eustace had that moment, but he got better.]

Haha, not really. I've been asked why I'm like that though.

You're so nice and easy to talk to. We only just met but I feel as if we can be good friends.

[ He nods to himself happily. ]

I've was staying here for a while...how about you? Were you here for along time?

Great! I wouldn't want to come across any other way!

[He's beaming.]

It's been a while. Got here with I guess the first group now? We dealt with those whole 'Halloween' nightmare that went down.

Yeah, I saw that. It was terrible!! There were giant monsters and people were getting hurt.

[ He frowns and looks a little saddened. ]

I fought off some strange creatures before running back into safety. Did you see anything dangerous too?

It started as a pretty awesome night too. Talk about party killers...

[He shakes his head.]

Besides the ones attacking the residents? Not really.

At least you didn't get too badly injured. It could have been seriously terrible.

[ Nier looks a little pensive for a moment. It's almost as if something else is heavily on his mind. ]

If I'm being honest the night was terrifying that time. I just hope that's the last of it and it won't be worse for us.

Eh? Did you?

[Or maybe that was a bad question. At that point, lots of them were still trying to get better with dreamotion, and in general, they by presence could end up affecting the area around them.]

Nah, shouldn't be that bad if anything happens. Besides, it might be cold now, but Spring will be here soon enough.

No, I didn't get hurt too badly just a few scratches here and there. A friend helped out so I wasn't too bothered by it at all.

[ A scratch or two in combat can be unavoidable sometimes. He's not seriously hurt now so it looks like he's telling the truth. Zidane's question doesn't bother him at all. ]

What's spring like? Is it different from what we have now?

Good! Good... geez, that night was crazy.

[But hey, they can talk about it. Could've been worse.]

Oh yeah. It gets warmer, the snow changes to rain, plants start growing back, and animals come out of hiding with more food around.

If the plants start growing back that must be good! We can see new flowers bloom.

[ He sounds excited for spring now!! ]

Do you have any favorite animals? I used to see a lot of sheep and goats roaming around outside in my world.

It's awesome! And seeing all the colors come back too, but just wait; you'll see it for yourself.

[Hehe, Nier's all excited for spring now. Great!]

A favorite animal? Huh, I guess a chocobo? No one's really asked before.

I can't wait to see it! A chocobo? They sound interesting too.

[ This is the first time Nier has heard of them. Honestly, there's a lot of things he doesn't know about because he comes from some world where time means very little. The wildlife and vegetation just adapt to the bleak environment so he doesn't really have a good idea of what other forms of life could exist. ]

I'm curious about a lot of things I suppose. We all come from different places...!

I'm sure you'll see one around eventually! They're out in the forest.

[They're also... not in every world so it'd make sense to only see them here now. If he asked, Zidane show him a few spots.]

Oh yeah. Though, I did meet someone who sounds like they come from a similar world. It still has its differences, but it's still pretty cool.

I didn't think they'd be so close. Maybe I'll go see them sooner than later. That might be cool!

[ He sounds more than willing to go take a trip and see the chocobos. ]

Was it surprising to learn that there's another world like yours?

Oh yeah! And if you wanna learn to tame one, just ask.

[But who knows? Maybe he'd figure it out.]

... Not really. After the initial shock, I guessed I should've expected it.

[ Winter time brings back some memories at this point. Memories of when things had really started to take a turn for Vanitas. It had been about this time, though it feels much longer ago than what it actually is, that he had really started to be encouraged to grow and figure out who he is as a person without Ventus. Without any sort of judgment being passed on him.

He's bundled up feeling overall a sense of melancholy because one of the people he'd like to share this all with can't be here when there's a bucket being shoved up in his face.

Vanitas' nose curls as he leans away. ]

Get that out of my face. It stinks.

Huh? Oh! Right I guess it does have a smell. Sorry, I'll get that away from you.

[ Nier nods apologetically and then puts the fish away quietly. He's too used to the smell of fish and the sea that he hadn't thought of it as smelly.]

Is that better?

They're fish. Of course they smell..

[ Vanitas is going to continue to make a "stinky face" until they are moved. Even then he looks a little wary and - ]

Moderately. Now why am I getting these shoved in my face?

[ He hadn't been fully paying Nier any mind. ]

I thought you might know what they're called. I have no idea what their names are.

[ He's oddly persistent about giving these fish names for some reason. Nier just thinks it's a little sad if they don't have something to be called by. ]

Have you seen anything like them before?

[ This isn't Noel's first rodeo with a snowy weather, even though it only happens in her world when the weather controlling systems break down. But that doesn't mean she's prepared for the snowball that hits her square in the face immediately after she turns around in response to the warning. The girl lets out a small yelp as the cold washes over her, barely keeping herself from falling backwards into the snow, and she shakes the damp remains of the projectile off. If nothing else, it alerts her to the predicament Nier's found himself in, and while she has no clue what might have prompted that, she doesn't hesitate to step in and help. ]

Bolverk!

[ A pair of white guns materialize in her hands, and she points one of them at the snowman that attacked her, pulling the trigger. The creature's head explodes, sending bits of ice and snow around it. Noel turns around swiftly and targets another snowman further away; this time, it's its middle part that explodes, ripping it in half. That's nowhere near the end of their assault, but at least it gives the girl a moment to turn her attention to Nier. ]

Ah! Are you alright?

[ She asks, like she isn't the one who got hit. Well, she'll probably feel it a little more once the adrenaline wears off. ]

Oh, hi Noel! I'm doing okay I was just... shocked. Those snowmen were so aggressive and I felt lost for a moment.

I don't have any injuries if you're worried about me being hurt.

[ He politely nods and smiles while greeting her with a wave. ]

How are you managing? Is everything okay on your end?

[Heading out to accompany Nier for part of his ice fishing trip had seemed like a good idea, at least for a little while— Kainé had spent plenty of time watching her own Nier fish back home, and the fact that this was something both Niers shared made it seem like a decent enough way to get to know him better.

Unfortunately, she had underestimated just how cold it would be, even having made an attempt to dress for the weather, and she had somewhere along the line forgotten that fish are boring.

She frowns as she leans to get a better look at the fish flopping around in the bucket, arms folded as she offers an exaggerated shrug.]

Hell if I know. Looks edible, at least. And surprisingly lively? How many did you pull up?

Hm, I pulled up a decent number of them because I thought it'd be useful. Eustace needs some fish scales and I was trying to help him.

[ He puts the fish down and focuses his gaze towards Kainé. ]

Do you know that guy?

Eustace?

[She raises an eyebrow, considering.]

Doesn't really ring a bell. Not like there's a whole lot of people here overall, though. I've probably seen him around.

[She vaguely remembers seeing some posting on the board about fish scales, as well...]

Is that so? I thought it would be worth asking anyway, but thanks Kainé.

[ He has a smile on his face. It's the type of smile he would usually make after talking about things like friendship and good will. ]

We keep running into different people down here. I've made a few friends actually. The ones that I've spoken to just like to help each other out.

So...you can rely on me if you need anything.

[Ugh, he's always so optimistic. How dare he.]

That's real generous of them.

[Her voice is a little flat as she makes that observation— she's sure for plenty of them, it's genuine, but as always, she has a problem with trust and expecting the worst.]

Guess I could say the same for some of the people I've met, though. Wait— was Eustace that guy you were working with on that Mutton Man bullshit?

[He was an ass. To be fair, so was she.]

That's the one. He's the person who helped me fight off the Mutton Man. Did you know he's really strong? I was surprised to see him in battle.

[ He really does consider Eustace as a friend. Nier sounds a little happy when he talks about having people he can count on. ]

There seem to be plenty of fighters in this place.

Yeah, yeah, no shortage of people who can swing a sword.

[She makes a dismissive sort of gesture that matches her tone– so Eustace is strong. Hell, plenty of people are.]

Don’t think your friend likes me very much.

[More accurately, she doesn’t like him. The truth of the matter is that they’re both difficult personalities, but Kainé is happy to heap the blame for their butting heads on Eustace.]

He was a real asshole when I talked to him during all that.

Really? Eustace can be nice. I'd prefer it if we could all just get along with each other, but I know it's not that easy.

[ Nier remembers how the villagers back home were just acting on fear and would sometimes outcast people they don't like. It's not fair of them to do that. Kainé had experienced a lot of painful things. Their memories might be different but he still cares for her all the same. ]

[She shrugs easily.]

He doesn't seem to think much of me. No skin off my nose, most people don't.

[She knows she's difficult— and though she won't often admit it, she keeps people at a distance on purpose. It's just easier that way.]

I don't give a shit either way.

Kainé, you know you'll always have your friends! I'll be right by your side no matter what.

[Nier keeps insisting on the fact that she's not alone. He'll say it as many times as he needs to. ]

We just have to keep on living and not lose hope.

I'm not worried about it.

[Not especially, anyway. That she even has a couple of good friends to call her own is more than she'd ever expected to have.]

Don't worry. You can save the pep talk for someone who needs it— I'm fine.
