Owl Rescue

✵ MINI EVENT: OWL RESCUE ✵

Late in the month, the blizzard has reached its peak and the skies seem strangely dark and ominous, a soft jingling of bells followed by deep, baritone voice echoes through the skies.

Gone away are the reindeer
Out to play are the dreamers
To lead their return, we gather in snow
All to bring the lost presents home

In the shadows we can build a snowman
To protect the sleigh that's full and bright.
Mimics will attack, and we'll say, "No, man!"
Only the real presents here will do!

We'll raise our mugs to the fire
Raise our voices higher and higher
Then we'll slash through our foes
From head down to their toes
All to save this Christmas Wonderland

In the city we can make some string lights
Beautiful and bright just like the stars
With a little magic, we'll be alright
And top everything off with just a Star

A star so big and bright
with magic all around
shining with all its might
making the world go 'round!

So come join us, all ye citizens
of this little festive town.
Guard your hearts with love and laughter,
and we'll bring this foul Grinch down!

With a mighty bellow the gusting winds clear and for a moment the morning skies seem beautiful and bright, as if the strange blizzard storm had never appeared at all. And then, in perhaps questionably late fashion, a large man dressed in red and astride a giant reindeer descends down to the central plaza.

"Ho ho ho! So this is where that bastard's been trying to hide, eh? I'll give it some credit—it chose a powerful world for its mischief…even if it could still use some work. And it's still just a baby—miracle it's lasted this long." The man, many of which will recognize as the fabled Santa Claus turns to look at the still run down buildings. For a man who is known to being "jolly" and full of holiday spirit, he looks as if he's about to head into war with the large axe at its his side and hardened expression. Just as he's about to say more, he clicks his tongue as a loud SCREEEEEECH is heard in the distance.

"But it won't be around much longer if you kids don't do anything about what's coming."

In the next moment, a large fiery owl large enough to overshadow half the town hovers in the air, the flames dangerously drifting from her feathers.

WHERE ARE THEY…

WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN!!

Her voice shakes the ground, the fire expanding outward as she gives one last heartrending cry filled with anger and agony.

PROMPTS

It's a confusing mess as two large figures have appeared at once, but it's clear that the owl's needs take precedence. With Santa's help, the owl will shrink small enough so that she can wait in the Plaza alongside and wait for those willing to find her eggs and owlets. But she watches over it with an anxious eye, the flames occasionally rising whenever there is a sound of one nearby. Everyone better work fast!

A. Talk with Santa. With Santa remaining with the owl, some may wish to speak to him while the others are working to find the baby owls. Although he plans to speak again once this is over, he will go ahead and answer any questions people may have. All questions may be asked in this thread, and as mentioned in the Game Notes, this will not be an IC thread. It is encouraged for questions to be asked now as it will help speed up dispensing information later.

B. Owl Egg Hunt. The eggs are scattered throughout the town Reverein, the nearby forests, and the lake. As if sensing their danger, the eggs have hidden themselves in various nooks and crannies, which can make it quite difficult to find. Hopefully no one accidentally tries to cook one. However, there are some clues. They will sparkle and will sometimes wiggle and roll out of their hiding place. They can also be "lured" out by friendly, positive emotions, or towards anyone that might exude a feeling of safety, security, and protection. However, if they're frightened the eggs will start to hatch. They sprout wings, legs, or even the beak to try and either escape or protect themselves. The eggs may also take on elemental characteristics, such as turning into a fireball, a block of ice, a giant rock, or a mini cyclone. Another threat will be the snoyotes as the sly buggers will follow would be rescuers to find the egg and try to snatch them and run off.

C. Owlet Panic. For the eggs that have already hatched, the owlets will be panicking and very emotional, causing a great environmental disruption around them. From fire storms to massive blizzards, the babies are out of control. Fortunately they're easy to spot—as well as hear. Their high pitched screeches can be heard from long distances. Calming emotions will be key in trying to soothe them, though dremoation abilities may be needed to get to them first.

D. Owlsitter. Whether already hatched or bursting out after returning to mother owl, the little owlets can be quite the handful. They're born already large enough to fly and while they aren't skilled, they will flutter about here and there. Essentially toddlers, they will get into anything that might interest them and cause mischief. With the owlets capable of casting elemental magic, that can pose a problem as sometimes it can go awry.

E. Snoyotes. The snoyotes are a cross between snake and coyote and they rely on their stealth skills rather than offensive power. They will stick to the shadows and can camouflage themselves well. When they do need to fight, they are tenacious and will try to sink their venomous fangs into their assailant. The venom is paralytic and is potent and fast acting. Although not always enough to kill, if enough venom makes its way to the heart then there might be trouble. As mentioned they will follow those looking for eggs to try and snatch them first, but some may be hunting other eggs. It's not necessary to kill them, driving them off to the Wild Canyons will do.

» BONUS: FANG COLLECTION. Although highly potent, the venom stored within the fangs of the snoyotes can be used in anti-venom remedies (and poisons). Collecting them will need some care. In addition, defanging a snoyote is one way to keep it away for those unwilling to kill. Their fangs will grow back so would be an effective way to farm fangs later.

Since dear old Saint Nicholas appears to be quite knowledgeable, Yujin can't help but ask: Does Santa perhaps know something about the fact that the moon went missing? Or any advice on how to get it back? Please sir, it's ever so dark at night.

[As charming and adorable as the baby owls are, Diluc has no complaints when they all decide to climb off of him in order to investigate the ball. They aren't small, and the removal of their combined weight is a relief for his muscles. He rolls his shoulders once the last owl hops onto the ground, forgetting for a moment that he has a very invested onlooker in the form of a giant, flowery owl.

Not that she gives him long to forget. Almost as soon as the owlets are gone, Ori crowds into his space and cuddles close with an affectionate hoot. Part of him wants to squirm away, but he can't quite bring himself to do so. It's Ori, who he's quite fond of already, and she's a giant owl. He really likes owls, if that wasn't already obvious from how he's interacted with the owlets. If he didn't know better, he'd have guessed that this whole situation was specifically engineered to fluster him.

He leans back into her, his face nearly as red as his hair, and continues to watch the owlets play.]

Hello, Ori.

[ He must really like owls - that much, Ori has gathered.

And she knows, by now, that Diluc doesn't tend toward physical affection so easily. She wants to respect his space, and as such gives him enough room to step away from her if need be— but he leans into her instead, and her chest puffs up as she gives a happy little noise in response. A few more lilacs bloom in her feathers, too, as she lightly nuzzles the top of his head.

The owlets, meanwhile, are happily preoccupied with the ball - at least until they hear their 'big sister' make a sound. At once, they turn their heads in the direction of the two, and then hoot inquisitively as if to say, what are you two up to? ]

After Luca asks his questions, Tenn will approach to ask if Santa knows of the witch Baba Yaga from the Halloween dreamscape. And if so, what can he tell them of her, and where is she now?

Santa will reveal that the Story Eater had first hid within the moon and then absorbed it into itself before disappearing from Songerein.

Getting it back won't be easy, and it's quite possible the Story Eater has either ditched it or transformed it into something truly nightmareish. However it's not only their moon—other moons in other worlds are affected so there are many moon "guardians" and "watchers" who are concerned. Once he's met with them and organized something, the Dreamwalkers will have a chance in dealing with it as Songerein's moon is the point of origin.

Santa does indeed know Baba Yaga! Very well in fact—Mrs. Claus and Baba Yaga often have tea parties and Santa himself may sometimes join in because who can say no to those delicious cookies? As for where she is, he is not sure exactly, but she was the on who directed him to Songerein. She was also the one who aided the Dreamwalkers in lending them clues and aids when the Story Eater attacked the Halloween dreamscape.

[Ori as an owl responds to affection much like Ori the person does. He expect no less at this point, and finds himself endeared rather than put off by it. The flowers that bloom in her feathers smell sweet and like springtime, which is a stark but welcomed contrast to the wintery air around them.

The owlets are only distracted by the ball for so long before they come stumbling back, curious about how he and Ori are currently arranged. The boldest of the bunch hops into his lap and hoots at him--setting of a small cyclone of excitement in response. The wind isn't quite enough to topple Ori, but it is more than enough to shove him over. Before he even realizes it, he's prone on the ground and staring upward as the owlets swarm in.]

...Iiii'm going to take that as a no.

[A small sigh as he watches the two start to tug...but this might not be such a bad thing? Unless the owl really gets into it then there might problems but until then—]

Guess it's time to fight for your own! Let's see who will win!

In my defense, I didn't know it would be part of a giant fiery owl's brood.

[Said egg is still shaking in his arms, but now it's wriggling again, as if understanding they're talking about its mama.]

But man is it a feisty one. Maybe dumping it on hot water woke it up faster. Mind helping me take this back to its moth—ow!

[While talking he had been struggling to keep hold, but it suddenly turned scorching hot, forcing him to drop it and it rolls along the ground, its feet flailing in the air.]

[It's fine!!! The owls don't really hurt unless they accidently poke them with a claw or beak.]

[They try to communicate back with a calming, though puzzled feeling. They don't mind staying in here to keep the owls safe but being huddled over like this wasn't quite part of the plan.]

Just to clarify, by "point of origin" Santa means that Songerein's moon is the source of all other moons? In every world?

First off, she's gushing like one would toward a beloved celebrity. Big fan of his work and she hopes she did well this year to spread the cheer.

Her question piggybacks off the knowledge that the moon is gone and who did it, considering her people worship the moon and that makes her very very determined to get it back. Don't steal the goddess!! Madhuri wishes to ask what more she can do to help.

Anya has some questions for Santa: she currently has suspicions and a growing theory that the Story Eater is behind the damages and chaos within the dreamshifts (based on the clues and what she has seen in the previous two), so she is wondering about how does the Story Eater manage to fit into the dremashifts and cause a lot of trouble into the mishaps in them. This is also in connection to one of Luca’s questions.

In addition, she also wants to know what was the Story Eater trying to do with the clues she and Zhao have found in Baga Yaga’s hut in the Halloween dreamshift and its connections to the candy corn golems.

NOT SCIENTIFICALLY POSSIBLE

[personal profile] allegedprisoner 2022-01-22 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
... Ahem. Luca the science guy is very, very confused. Yes, sure, this world might run on dreams, but he's pretty sure most universes' moons are solid, humongous space rocks floating several hundred thousand miles from the planet. How is it possible for one being to go from universe to universe and eat multiple moons, let alone hide in them?! There's also the issue with tidal patterns and planets with multiple moons or that are moons and (concerned scientist noises)!!!

[ He said vibe, not climb the tree.

Hunter's kind of watching her scale the tree... Hm. How to work with this. ]

I dunno if this will work if we're both up here.

[personal profile] grandduchess_anya 2022-01-22 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry about that, I just thought that I could go up the tree as well to help out.

(Yep, she is a bit of a stubborn lady for a Grand Duchess, not that she is willing to admit it. Pooka watches the two humans trying to figure out to save the egg.)

By vibe, that would mean maybe sing to the egg itself or give it some calm positive energy, right?
hashtagwoof: (Cast aside any humanity in your brain)

[personal profile] hashtagwoof 2022-01-22 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
[ How is he supposed to know she's a grand duchess anyway? ]

Yeah, that. Do something to lure it out. I think I've seen it working for some people.

[ Except he isn't that chill and he refuses to admit it. ]

Also, you're taller. So I guess you could actually reach the egg without falling... [ The gears are turning in the boy's head... This could actually be useful. ] You know what? You stay up here. I'll go back down in case you end up knocking the egg out of the tree.

Good idea, I can work with that. I can try to sing a lullaby to it so it will be easier for us to catch it.

(She can definitely work with this plan. If she can combine her singing Marie’s lullaby with dreamotion energy, then the egg would be calm enough for her to rescue it and send it down to Hunter.)

Alright, here goes nothing.

(And so she begins to climb up the tree branches, hopefully not to break plenty of tree branches on her way up. Pooka is hoping that his master will stay safe.)

No, but the moons are connected in the sense that they are like portal points for the Story Eater to traverse through. So since the Story Eater started in Songerein, Songerein's moon would be the "point of origin" in that context.

As for why the moon, moons have always been symbolic both for dreams and source of many folklore and stories, so the Story Eater can feed off both themes and remain true to its original nature, which is being able to travel into different stories and destroy them.
dreamkeepers: (Default)

[personal profile] dreamkeepers 2022-01-22 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Ho ho ho, Santa will just laugh heartily and reference the many worlds where the moons appear within the planet's sky itself, not outside space. And with faces! How strange worlds can be.

However, he will clarify that the Story Eater isn't eating other moons but is absorbing their energy, corrupting that energy, and then it's reflected back out into the world to spread that corruption. This helps create the Erasers that Luca and the others would be familiar with. But with the additional dreamotion energy boost the Story Eater has gained in Songerein, it's adding nightmare elements as well.
dreamkeepers: (Default)

[personal profile] dreamkeepers 2022-01-22 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, Madhuri, you have done well in keeping up spirits and he hopes she will continue to do so.

There are many people similar to Madhuri's position who feel the same way, however for now there is not much they can do until they track down the Story Eater. In this giant multiuniverse where there are even multiples of himself, there are also many powerful figures in similar positions whom he will discuss with. They will be more knowledgeable on what is happening with the moons, and once a solid plan is set, Santa will return to inform them.

For now, just help keep the nightmares at bay! Songerein will be fine without its moon for a time, but nightmare energy will slowly grow the longer it's away. The current spike in nightamres is a result of the moon's sudden loss but it will stabilize before the month is over. So as long as the balance between nightmare energy and dreamotion energy remains, they shouldn't see too much disturbance.

[ Plus, judging by the blinking and glancing about, he seems to have been snapped out of his dog... ness. ]

Urgh. [ He stands up like a normal person and starts to brush himself off, only to notice the tail as he's looking down. ] What? Not again... [ Grumble, grumble. He briefly shakes his hands until his claws turn back into nails before patting at the tail until it vanishes in a puff of fur. He... Hasn't realized he still has dog teeth.

Whatever. The owl has already taken its slobber-covered prize and flown off to a different part of the training course. Hunter's suck with the guy who has some kind of tattoo going up his face... Wonderful. ]

Right. Can you do me a favor and not speak of this again? [ Even though there's a good chance something like that might happen again, given his recent track record. ]

Santa will again confirm that the Story Eater is indeed the one behind the recent problems, and the Story Eater is able to travel into large dreamscapes similar to how it could travel into different stories in the Story Realm. This is due to it having absorbed dreamotion energy and gaining that ability to dreamwalk.

As for the clues back in the Halloween dreamshift, the Story Eater was trying to frame Baba Yaga as the culprit behind the chaos in an effort to throw everyone off its trail. She was very irritated over the matter, tsk.
