[CLOSED] A Meeting of Scientific Minds
Who: Azmuth and Zelda
Which: Log, Closed
Where: The plaza backdated to after this thread
What: Azmuth and Zelda get together to talk SCIENCE in this world of dreams
Warnings: NERRRRRRRRRRRDS
As inconvenient as it was to not have actual audio or video communication, the ability to imprint an image onto the page instead of struggling to draw one was helpful. At the very least, it gave him someone to clearly look for. Quite frankly, he was more likely to see this "Zelda" before she caught sight of him.
Particularly given all the overgrowth. True, the cleanup efforts had been coming along quite nicely, but there was still so much green around that Azmuth was very likely to blend in. His kind had evolved to blend into the swamp after all which had plenty of green and gray to go around.
He'd picked out an empty table on the edge of the plaza, standing on top of the surface to better stand out just in case he didn't catch sight of her first.

"Mr. Azmuth!" she called out as she carefully picked her way through the plaza. She paid special attention to every place that she set her feet, stepping on only flat, empty flagstones. She looked very much like she was trying to tiptoe through a minefield. "Are you there?"

Azmuth's lips twitched with amusement at seeing her picking her way through the plaza. Really, it was quite charming in its own right.

"I suppose that's much more sensible than hoping every other being is always mindful of where they walk." Zelda inclined her head in a polite bow. "I must admit, I've not been acquainted with anyone of your stature. My kind are among the smallest residents of my kingdom, and even those smaller than us stand a couple feet tall."
Sorry for the delay. Got swamped.
"Even throughout the galaxy, sapient species my kind's height are in the extreme minority. I expect those of taller races to neglect minding their feet simply because they aren't used to it."
No judgement for those species. Just statement of facts. He was tiny compared to most races. Besides, it was more natural to look for things around one's eye level.
"But that's not important." Azmuth waved his hand. "You wanted more information on traveling between worlds and other sciences, I believe?"
life be like that sometimes. no worries!
The young princess wasn't typically a chatty sort of person most of the time, but when it came to science, she could hardly still her tongue. "I loved to study in my homeland, particularly ancient technology and botany. I tried to assist the Sheikah scholars in their research whenever I could."
Thank you! Also sorry for the small delay this time. Was at my sister's wedding. ^^
"I'd like that and I'd be willing to teach you as much as you're willing to learn," he told her honestly. He gestured to the chair at the table. "Why don't you sit down and tell me a bit about yourself and what you know so far?"

"Of course," she agreed. "As you already know, my name is Zelda and I come from the kingdom of Hyrule. I am--" Zelda caught herself and hesitated. She'd been about to tell him about her royal heritage, which inevitably meant telling him about her failure to save her kingdom. This was something she had intentionally omitted from her introductions since she awoke in Songerein, ever since Satan gave her the idea. It was nice, not shouldering that weight all the time.
She glanced at Azmuth, then looked guiltily down at her hands. She couldn't lie to her new teacher about who she was. "--I am the Crown Princess of Hyrule," she continued, her tone notably less enthusiastic. "A prophecy foretold that a terrible evil would arise to destroy the kingdom, and only the power of the descendants of the Goddess--like myself and my mother--could defeat it. My mother died when I was a little girl, so I trained alone to awaken my power to save Hyrule.
"While I was growing up, archeologists from the Sheikah tribe began finding ancient technology buried all over the kingdom. Much of what was discovered was in the form of machines which had ben engineered over ten thousand years ago by the progenitors of the Sheikah tribe." A smile returned to Zelda's face. "I remember when my mother was still alive, how excited she was for these machines. Everyone was talking about how we might be able to use them to defeat Calamity Ganon if it truly awoke, instead of relying on my mother's power. I fully believed that, even after she died and my father started having doubts. He pushed me to train and awaken my power when I would have rather been helping research and develop the ancient technology."
Her smile faded. "But my father was right, in the end. The great evil really did awaken, when I turned seventeen, and it was able to infect the technology we worked so hard on. I... couldn't awaken my power until it was far too late."
Tears welled up in her eyes, but Zelda held them back. She looked up again, forcing an apologetic smile. "I-I apologize. I promise I'm not typically so emotional."

The backstory was interesting but irrelevant to the current conversation. Still, he had told her to tell him about herself so he could know her a bit better. The sort of pressure this young female had been under...
...well, Azmuth knew it all too well.
He very deliberately didn't comment on her royal heritage. (Not that it would've mattered anyway. The Galvan Empire was a technocracy, not a monarchy.) He wasn't the best with social cues, but it clearly made her uncomfortable. Instead, he chose to ask about something that might be able to help her get control over her emotions back.
"You said these machines were built ten thousand years before your current time. I take it that they're more advanced than what's currently available in your land?"

Whether intentional or coincidental, Azmuth offered her a change in subjects and Zelda gratefully took it.
"Considerably, yes," she replied, swallowing her tears. "The majority of relics excavated were autonomous machines, mostly ranging in size from a wagon to a small house. We know that they were created to aid in battle against Calamity Ganon ten thousand years ago. Very little of the technology we uncovered had any non-military applications. I suspect that, at that time, there was little impetus to develop anything that wouldn't be useful in battle.
"We called these machines Guardians. They were powered by some sort of ceaseless energy source that we were never able to fully understand. The Hyrule I grew up in relied on power sources that were positively barbaric in comparison: combustion, mostly fueled by wood or coal burning; wind and water."

As she spoke on her beloved technology, Zelda's eyes dried and she regained her usual composure. "To be honest," she mused, "I always assumed that scientific progress was linear, and that what happened in Hyrule was more of an aberration."
