SUMMER BEACH FUN

After a week of frenzy as everyone in town prepared for the weekend summer beach fun bash, the beach is now teeming with activity as everyone shouts in joy at seeing the beautiful white sands and clear waters. Blankets are out, tents erected, music and refreshments out on covered tables, and spirits are high as everyone has fun enjoying the new place. With the beach surrounded by jungle forests, it feels as if they stepped onto a tropical island getaway. And when night falls, it will be a time to relax and just enjoy the night sky, now graced with the new two moons.

Note: This log is open to everyone and doubles as a "Character Intro" for new characters who were just accepted this round. As a reminder, new characters are welcome to carry over their TDM as forward dated to the earlier days of July so that they're not really "new" if players wish to do so! Starting fresh is also acceptable. Please put Character Name | Canon in the subject line of your toplevel.

The log has two parts, with the first portion focusing on the beach party and the second half the same evening for the moon viewing. Any questions can be directed here.

I. BEACH PARTY

For those who don't have any beach attire or equipment, worry not! Swimwear, towels, umbrellas, changing tents, and anything else beach goers might need to enjoy the day out in the sun. Only thing lacking is sunscreen, but surely something with dreamotion or magic can be used as an alternative. Food and refreshments are also provided, some out fishing for some fresh catches or setting up some barbecue. There are a lot of activities both in and out of the water, so have fun!

A. Beach Games. There are a lot of games that can be played on the beach, and some may introduce activities that they're familiar with from their world. But there are three notable games that have gained popularity on the sandy shores. Just be careful not to litter or these seemingly cute and cuddly sea otters will rush out from the water and throw or smack anyone with the trash.

  1. Water Balloon Fight. No teams, just an all out brawl. Buckets of balloons filled with rainbow colored water can be found scattered all over the beach so a battle can happen anytime, anywhere. Once hit, the balloon will explode into varying different colors, dying the person colorful shades from mundane to neon bright that will last from anywhere to a few minutes to an hour. Despite being stuck a splattered rainbow, it will leave everyone feeling festive and fun.

  2. Beach Volleyball. There are a few nets set up for anyone to play with, and while it doesn't have to be volleyball, there is one section that is having very heated matches. Dreamotion is the key factor, people encouraging everyone to put on their "best fighting spirit." This is leading to the "ball" turning into more of a flaming ball of fire as players spike it and send it hurtling over the net at breathtaking speeds, some jumping tens of feet in the air to try and return the ball. This also means that sometimes the ball will fly out of control, so watch out! Maybe help put out some stray fires.

  3. Fruit Slicer. While standing on a platform, participants will have a variety of fruit thrown at them and using dreamotion only, they must slice or destroy the fruit before they're hit or miss five. It starts off slow and easy before it escalates, getting faster with more fruit as time goes on. This results in a lot of messes as some go a bit extreme and instead of slicing, fruit explosions happen instead. But anyone can give it a go, just be careful if watching! Might get fruit juice splattered. For those who manage to make cleaner (sanitary) cuts, the fruit can be served out or even processed to make juice.

  4. Sand Art. Sandcastles are overdone—why not try and make unique sand sculptures instead? Tools are provided, and dreamotion is encouraged to add some extra finesse. Some may even use their dreamotion to make their creations move with…varying results. It is sand, after all, not the sturdiest of materials.

B. Water Fun. Out in the water are more games and activities, with some inflatable tubes and other items that can be used out in the water. Sure there's just plain swimming and snorkeling, but there are more exciting things available as well.

  1. Turtle Shell Boats. At some point, giant colorful sea turtles that are large enough to carry one full grown adult emerge from the waters, toting even larger clam shells behind them. They're big enough to fit two people, and the turtles offer (yes, they speak!) to pull anyone around the shores for a fun ride. Those who are skeptical will soon see that the daring ones will prove it a safe ride…though it can get a bit bumpy and the turtles are fast. It'll feel just like riding on a motorboat going at full speed, so hold on tight! Anyone who falls in the water will be rescued by the turtles.

  2. Windsurfing. Sailboats are still under construction (though there are certainly some strange mockups around), but windsurfing is a current hit for what's available! Smoothing out large planks of driftwood and making makeshift sails, people are out on the waters riding those small waves with some helping out by creating wind via dreamotion. In fact, there are requests for anyone to help conjure wind or make the waves bigger. So if some are not as daring to try it out, perhaps they can lend a hand instead. Just be careful—too much wind might send the windsurfer flying into the air!

  3. Snorkeling and Diving. For those who want to do some exploring, some basic gear for snorkeling and short distance diving has been prepared, though some could try and use dreamotion to take them further. Those who can transform will have an even easier time to swim and venture underwater. The waters are beautifully clear and at least in the shallows whatever marine life is around is friendly, some even waving or hiding in their coral homes. If there are any mermaids around, they're staying hidden. There must be something in the water keeping an eye on the new visitors, as whenever someone tries to go too far away from the breakline the current will suddenly push them back. Some may even see strange shadows in the far distance…but who knows what it could be. Anyway, this is the free for all swimming and exploring prompt so enjoy! Feel free to come up with whatever you think could be found between the shallow waters and the coral reefs that serve as a surf break before people are shoved back by the current.

C. Crabs vs. Lobsters Dance Off. Music and dancing is a must have for any beach party, and there is a section of the beach designated for just that. They may not have stereo speakers or high tech lights, but who needs that when they can just make one's own instruments with coconuts, reeds, acoustic guitars, and use dreamotion to amplify sound? But at some point, everyone's groove will be thrown with an army of raving crabs emerge from the sand followed by dancing lobsters from the waters. After some brief claw clacking and spitting insults at each other, now everyone is pulled into the feud and must help prove which crustacean group is the best. This is done either by wearing either a crab or lobster costume (where did they come from no one knows) or turning into a crab or lobster to fit in (also mysteriously done). Fortunately individuals conscripted into this feud only have to stay for one round and can leave the "stage" to turn back to normal.

II. MOON VIEWING

That same night a moon viewing party is planned as it would be the best time to look at the new two moons that now grace Songerein's night skies. For those who stick around, tents and sleeping bags will be provided for those who didn't bring their own to experience a fun camping trip on the beach. It's a little chillier at night, so campfires will also be found around. With a much more relaxed atmosphere there's not as much going on, but there are still a few highlights for people to participate in.

A. Social Mingle. With everyone unwinding, it's an easier time to just sit on the sand and stare up at the stares with some warm food and a good drink in hand. Just be mindful of the drinks, especially the alcoholic kind. They seem to be more flavorful and potent when under direct moonlight, causing one to reminisce about their home more than usual. Or feel more tipsy and daring than they normally would be.

B. Storytime. Some might feel more inclined to share stories while on the beach, especially if there's a campfire going. Spooky stories, stories about the moon, whatever one feels like sharing they will find that their words will "come to life" in the air. As soon as someone starts speaking, little twinkling lights will drift in and dance in the air, forming moving pictures to help illustrate the story.

C. Night Kites. Special kites illuminated with glowing beads that will grow brighter the more dreamotion is channeled into them are available for anyone willing to try and fly kites in the dark. There are standard shapes and then there are some that take after various sea creatures, making them seem like they're alive. There's enough wind at least, and if not dreamotion can help give a good burst to get them going. The beads make for colorful light displays, but be careful! People are running around in the dark after all, with only the moonlight and whatever light sources around to guide them.

D. Moon Lanterns. Later in the evening, attention is called to an area where some fae are showing how to make paper mache moon lanterns. The construction is easy and it is encouraged to use dreamotion to strengthen it, filling it with whatever hopes and dreams the individual may have. After lighting a special candle, the lanterns are to be set into the water where they will drift for a small distance before slowly rising up into the air. The lanterns will follow the moonlight and it is said they will eventually reach the moon and those hopes and dreams will be blessed, more likely to come true. Is it real or not, who's to say—but it's a nice little touch to end the evening.

[Alastor pats her on the head.]

As I said, I prefer the good company on this beach. Though if this suddenly turned into an ocean of flame, so long as I had you with me, it wouldn't be so bad. Though I would insist on us moving out of range, ha!

And fret not, my dear: I earned my trip to Hell in spades! A terrible beach is just part of the package deal.

[ Naminé's chin naturally tucks under the pat to her head, but her eyes are round with shy, pleased surprise during the same moment. She emits a touched, 'Alastor--' though she doesn't follow it up with anything concrete, too grateful to put words to the sentiment behind it.

Settling again, she exhales a faint laugh at the earlier part, only to sober at the last portion. Trying to keep his mood, however, she notes, ]

Running on sand isn't easy, but we'd have a pretty good incentive. So - if you fell, I'd just have to wait for you.

[ That's probably an attempt at a humorous way of saying the feeling's mutual. And he's told her not to fret, but she can't quite help it, and gradually the corners of her mouth sink thoughtfully. ]

... Hey, Alastor? How... long were you alive?

[ She might be eyeing that mental puzzle of hers again. ]

No need to worry, dear! If I fell...

[He vanishes from one side of her and reappears on the other.]

...I could just teleport to catch up!

[Sadly it doesn't seem he can pull people along with his teleports due to the limitations of this world. Though perhaps that's not a bad thing. It's bitter cold the way he teleports.]

[His ear twitches as he brings a hand to his chin.]
Let's see...how old was I? Thirty? Maybe a little older? [He places a hand to his head.] Good gravy, I know I've been dead at least thrice as long as I was alive!
lethechained: (Oh :O ?)

[ Naminé sucks in a breath as he disappears, eyes rounding briefly before Alastor's voice prompts her to glance to her other side. Immediately deflating again, she exhales the air as a soft huff, mouth curling. ]

Ah, that's right...! I forget sometimes that I shouldn't worry so much about you.

[ Since he's perfectly able to take care of himself. (Not, however, that that'll actually stop her.) At the answer to her question, Naminé lets out a hum that sounds a little like a, 'wow...!' ]

That's such a long time to be in a place like the one you've described...! Or-- to be anywhere, really. I'm not even anywhere near thirty years old, and it already feels like I've been around for a while.

[ Then again, they do say time speeds up the older you get, and considering how brief her life's actually been... ]

But-- wait. Don't people usually live longer than that?

[ Don't ask her exactly how long they're actually supposed to live, she might have a hard time with that one. ]

My dear, I almost envy you for being so young and getting to experience so many things in the world for the first time. Being around so long really does have its drawbacks!

[He bobs his head in a nod at her question.] Yes, indeed-y! I was expected to live for another twenty years during my time though that's nothing compared to the human lifespan nowadays! However, life happens when we least expect it. Though I suppose in this case, it'd be "death happens when we least expect it".

[ Her bashful little smile is warm. ]

Maybe so...! But at least you've got your memories, right? And by now you've probably done all sorts of things I never will, and learned all kinds of important stuff that can help you and everyone around you.

[ Like which mushrooms will kill someone, although that's just one example. Sobering in response to that last part despite his casual tone, ]

... Oh. I'm sorry it turned out that way...! It-- doesn't seem right to have to spend all that time in the underworld when you didn't even get to live all of your first life.

I do! Though I admit the ones after I died have been much more exciting. Coming to this place for example! Why, who knows if we would've crossed paths without our unique set of circumstances, hmm?

[And he waggles his finger at her.]

My only complaint is the method by which I died. I wasn't the best man in life or in death, after all!
lethechained: (sympathy)

[ As much as that first bit causes her clear concern and she sucks in a breath to express some product thereof - as it often does, logic thereafter wins out and tempers her initial reaction, causing her to deflate. ]

That's... probably true, [ she admits after a moment. ] No one really seems to know how we're chosen to end up here, but even small changes can make a difference in the course of everything else. [ At a murmur, ] It would have been a shame if we hadn't met, but...

[ Still seems a shame for that outcome to have hypothetically cost so many years of suffering. That finger waggle attracts her attention, though, and almost immediately prompts her to look contrite, chin tucking. Eyes switching once or twice between his, she begins to look thoughtful. ]

You know? Even though you say that you're supposed to be a bad guy, I don't think I've ever heard anyone else sound so sure that they deserve what happened to them. Usually-- when bad people hurt someone, they try to avoid being punished for it. They tell themselves that there's some reason why what they did was for the best, or that it was because they had no other choice, but you... don't seem to be afraid to take responsibility for it at all.

Oh, I made sure to cover my tracks when I was alive to avoid the retribution of the law. I had my reasons for doing what I did, and it wouldn't do to get caught if I wanted to keep going!

However, I always knew that I'd be paying the price when I met my mortal end. I broke the first of my Creator's Laws many, many times. It didn't matter what my reasons were: I knew better than to break His rules but did it anyway. To deny that I earned my eternal punishment would be ridiculous.

[He rolls his eyes.]

Honestly, some sinners who Fall nowadays might even claim that my crimes were for some nebulous "greater good", that they were justified, but that's their own narcissism talking. They believed in life that their own heinous actions were wholly justified, that they were the righteous ones who were forced by society or some other such nonsense to violating His Laws which absolved them of blame. That they were destined for Heaven.

[He rolls his eyes again.]

It used to be funny watching them realize that they were wrong the whole time, to hear them wail about how unfair it was that they ended up in Hell, but it became less so as time wore. It's gotten to the point where every sinner who Falls nowadays holds that attitude. Earth must be becoming a real cesspool on par with Hell itself.

[Little wonder so many Fell. Did anyone actually reach Heaven nowadays?]

Meanwhile I was more or less born behind the eight ball, but I wholly acknowledge my terrible choices were my own. Those circumstances didn't push me to do anything; I did it to myself.

[ Not knowing his Creator's laws, Naminé can't fully fit into place what it was Alastor did that was so bad, but if it was the first rule, it must have been pretty serious. She doesn't like the thought, but if he had his reasons... well, were they good ones or bad ones? Knowing the answer doesn't feel like it would change much, since the Alastor she's sharing the beach with now has had nearly a century to develop beyond that, so she doesn't ask.

It's not as if she hasn't done terrible things, herself.

Quiet, Naminé pulls her knees up close to her body, shifting the blanket around to encompass them before curling her arms around her lower legs. Her mouth is downturned and serious, and she holds her silence 'til the end, eyes alternately regarding the sand beneath them and watching Alastor speak. Then, finally, ]

Your world must be in a lot of trouble, if that's the case. If someone can't accept that what they did was wrong, it's much harder to learn from their mistakes. I suppose everyone would like to believe that they're a good person, but some of us are just too selfish.

[ Her delicate brow is scrunched up, and presently she leans down a little, chin coming almost to rest on her knees. ]

And even if it's hard to do what's right, that doesn't mean it's okay not to. Sometimes... other people understand the reasons, and won't blame you for it, but-- that doesn't change any of the harm that it can cause. Whether you're the one who's hurt, or someone else is--...

[ Both are bad, but one's worse, from her perspective, than the other. Her eyelids flutter a moment, her gaze sinking again, and she admits, ]

... I haven't always made good choices either. Maybe - in your world, I would wind up in the same place you did. [ Glancing up, she considers Alastor with a searching gaze. ] Do you regret them? The things you chose to do when you were alive?

Darling, I think you'd go to Heaven if for no other reason than you'd been punished enough.

[His mind flashes back to that horrible little Hell of white walls and corridors of doors.]

Regardless, a sweet little belle like you? You clearly regret what you've done and you've got time to atone for any damage you caused. The chance we have is the life we live. As long as you've alive, you can turn things around!

[But he grows quiet at her question, the hiss of his static harmonizing with the whisper of waves against the shoreline.]

My wires have always been a bit frayed, Miss Namine. No further proof needed than how I enjoy killing. Unlike when I go hunting for game, I didn't give the people I killed an ounce of respect or care. I was always a monster on the inside, a twisted thing that mimicked the proper behavior of polite society, but I made it a point to only hunt my fellow monsters. Killing them was simply spiriting them off to their eternal damnation that much sooner, a mercy compared to what they did. They didn't just kill their victims. Some of what they did...

[His claws dig deep gouges into the sand.]

I couldn't suffer those wretches to live. I was already damned, so why not do a bit of housecleaning before I went to my own eternal punishment? Not behavior worthy of Heaven in the least.

But...I do have one regret: I regret disappointing my Creator and those who genuinely thought so highly of me. I can only imagine what they thought when they realized that that friendly voice they invited again and again into their homes had been such a despicable creature.

[ Has she been punished enough? Naminé's never quite sure; the guilt's never really gone away, just gotten harder to notice. Everyone else seems to have forgiven her, though, regardless of whether she's forgiven herself. (Then there's the existential question of if she's ever been alive, and whether or not she is right now, but that doesn't bear mentioning.)

The lass's silence blends into Alastor's, her eyes attentive yet unaccusing as she waits through the static for his answer. When it comes, she's--

Well, it's understandable to be a bit startled, isn't it? Hunting is one thing, but hunting people... The girl shrinks slightly into her blanket, eyes round and momentarily disbelieving before the pieces start to click into place and the grainy sound of his claws dragging in the bits of shell and broken rock pulls her attention down.

Gentle creature that Naminé is, it has never suited her taste to harm others, no matter how deserving of it they might or might not have been. But so, too, has she been on the receiving end of enough callous cruelty to know that desire to put an end to the further suffering the source might inflict upon her, and upon further unfortunate souls more vulnerable even than she.

With her chin tucked into the blankets and a little flutter of her lashes, the girl looks up at him again. It's a bit of a struggle to extricate a hand from the coccoon she's wrapped around herself, but Naminé puts in the effort, fingers splaying carefully as she finally reaches out to touch the tips of them gently to the back of one of Alastor's palms. A silent ministration, perhaps, to encourage those claws of his to relax. ]

I can't... say that what you did wasn't wrong, [ she starts, only slightly hesitant, voice soft. He's got a critical enough view of himself as it is, and though she might not be able to disagree with it, ] But... I think I understand it.

[ Maybe not taking such action herself, no. Still, ]

Sometimes-- people won't stop hurting others until someone else makes them stop.

[ And though she might not agree with the method, it doesn't seem to have scared her from his side. ]

Oh what I did was very wrong, my dear! Defending someone to directly stop them in the act is one thing. Plotting how to ensnare and kill them when they weren't is entirely anther. No further proof needed than where I ended up.

[Some bit of tension he refuses to acknowledge relaxes in that she doesn't seem scared off. At least there's that.]

[ Hand drawing back to return to where it was previously wrapped up in her blanket, Naminé gives a sober nod. It isn't as though she's never been party to facilitating a standoff, but those were always a more direct fight to the death to prevent some worse outcome, rather than a one-sided attack. Nevertheless, she really is more able to understand the instinct to strike when one can than she might like to be, even if she has to admit, ]

I suppose it's hard to argue with that.

[ In light of his ultimate fate, that is, although she says as much reluctantly. Her expression is a troubled one, her mouth a preoccupied line, but she remains where she is, and after a moment her expression softens. ]

Well... whatever your Creator thinks, I'm grateful that you were willing to talk about it. That is - I'm not saying that you've been hiding it, exactly, but... I can see why it hasn't come up before.
