{ haunted carnival | test drive #08 - october 2022 }

HAUNTED CARNIVAL
Full details on everything can be found here, but an important reminder that this event log doubles as our Test Drive Meme and information can be found in this section.
This means any outside characters participating in the log are canonly logged as appearing in Songerein in October and will remain in Songerein from the IC date of October 25 through 31 (this log is forward dated to the 25th). However, outside characters can only thread within this log, so for those seriously considering the game, you are welcome to use non-festival prompts for your toplevels. Anyone who apps in and is accepted will have their character count October as their first time in the game without any disruption, so all content will carry over. Those who do not apply will disappear which should not seem too unusual as people randomly disappear already, however players in game can choose to retcon and pretend a character was never there to begin with if it would be easier; or even think their presence was just a dream.
IMPORTANT! All outside characters MUST have "TDM" in their subject line, even if you might not app. This will help people differentiate those who are already in the game and those who are not.
TDM threads are required for samples. Refer to the Game Info for general information and feel free to toss any questions here. Reserves will open Tuesday, October 25th and Applications will open on November 1st. Our application cycles are bi-monthly so the next cycle after won't be until January.

I. CARNIVAL FUN

The moment a guest enters the carnival grounds, there is a high chance (read: optional) they will find themselves changed in some way to fit the spooky, haunted atmosphere. Instead of just wearing a vampire costume, the character will actually turn into one. Of course, how much of a transformation varies between complete to partial changes. It should be noted that this is only a cosmetic and ability change—no matter what someone changes into, they won't have any personality changes…unless one of the carnival attendants cast a small enchantment to make it so. Of course this is by chance as well (read: optional).

Caramel Apples: Tart green apples dipped in caramel and decorated with chocolate to look like they’re covered in spiders and spider webs. Eating one of these will have the dreamer feeling crafty and industrious, just like spiders themselves often are. Also, the idea of eating bugs (or even other spiders?!) suddenly seems strangely appealing…
Cherry Blood Popcorn: Popcorn drenched in cherry syrup and decorated with candy bones. The combination of sugar and dreamotion energy leaves the eater feeling giddy and cheerful, somewhat in contrast to the gruesome appearance of the treat itself.
Funnel "Brain" Cakes: Funnel cakes colored to look like brains when served. Comes in regular or zombie brain varieties. Eating one makes you feel lethargic and hungry, like the only thing that matters is your next snack fix, but you’re not willing to do much more than shamble toward it.
Mummies in a Blanket: Small hot dogs wrapped in biscuit dough and decorated to look like mummies. After eating this, you may or may not want to wrap yourself into a blanket and take a nap—ideally somewhere dark and spooky.

NERF Gun Shooting Gallery: Use dreamotion to shoot foam darts from a gun at various ghostly and ghouly targets lined up on a platform. Advanced players may want to try their hand at making the guns shoot other objects. Water? Fire? Glitter bombs? The only limit is one’s imagination.
Ring Toss: A series of witch hats are lined up, and the objective is to toss rings on the hats for points. Did something just peek up from under one of the hats? It’s probably nothing to worry about.
Potion Bottles: A variation of the milk bottles game wherein you throw balls to knock over flasks and beakers filled with strangely-colored liquid. In most cases, the spilled potion is totally harmless. Once in a while, however, it may have some interesting effects on the player and/or the booth itself.
Slime Pit: There’s a giant pit of slime with a sign next to it: prizes within for those willing to get a bit messy! Said prizes range from giant candy bars to random silly toys to skeletal limbs…? Oh that belongs to the skeleton having fun in the pit, they might want it back.
II. ATTRACTIONS

B. Wild Carousel. The creatures on this carousel are not just colorful painted steeds but are more frightening in nature and looking more undead than living. Skeletal horses, direwolves, fanged deer with bloody horns. What makes this ride truly terrifying, however, is that the creatures are alive, restrained only by the pole stuck through them. But there are times when they manage to break free, causing havoc as they run through the park. The only good news is they don't attack, instead aiming for the carnival food as if hungry. Either hang on or help capture them back!

D. Spinning Bumper Cups. A combination of the classic bumper cars and spinning cups rides, this attraction has its riders in skull shaped bumper cars that will randomly spin. Riders have the ability to fire off "pumpkin bombs" at the others, which will splatter pumpkin goop to slow down their car. It will also make the car spin for a few rotations. Dreamotion will also help boost the speed, stabilize a spinning car faster, and make the pumpkin bombs more explosive. Just be careful—the barrier around the arena is made of bones and therefore quite brittle. It's not unusual to see a car spin out and lose control driving through the carnival grounds. Stop the runaway car and bring it back! Or shoot people with pumpkin bombs.

F. Other Rides. There are plenty of rides and attractions at the carnival, too many to list all of them here. A roller coaster, tower drop, gravitron, bungee jumps, pendulum ship—whatever one might think exists, it's there in all its twisted nightmare glory. One thing they all have in common is the more fear and thrill and screams generated, the faster they go. Just hope the ride doesn't stall and get stuck…
III. HAUNTING CLUES

Although the main purpose for these prompts is to find the clues, anyone is free to use them for general use and not focus on getting the clue. For those who do participate, we'll be asking for thread during our Activity Check! Those who are TDMing regardless of application can also have their threads counted by commenting to this thread and following the directions.

The main clue here is "Villains!' I shrieked. 'Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear up the planks! Here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!" To help both those who have turned into dolls as well as get the clue, everyone has to find the right place where some candied hearts are hidden. Fortunately the "blood trail" (it's raspberry syrup) will help lead them to the right place.

The main clue is "And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting // On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door // Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning // Shall be lifted – nevermore". To get out of this house, they have to first look for the bust that has the red eyed raven on it. This will be tricky as there will be many ravens with different colored eyes. Once they do, there will be a small picture frame. They must manifest one or more of the images they are seeing and capture it into the frame. This is simply done by waving it like a net, but the manifestation can move around. This can be as easy or difficult as a player wants, and how affected the character is from what they see and hear can also be a factor. The more affected they are, the easier it is to manifest but difficult to capture. The less affected, it will be more difficult to manifest as they have to tap into that raw fear, but will be easier to capture.

The main clue is "Who dares?" he demanded hoarsely of the courtiers who stood near him --"who dares insult us with this blasphemous mockery? Seize him and unmask him --that we may know whom we have to hang at sunrise, from the battlements!" There is a red clad figure wearing a skull mask. He will randomly bust through the hay walls and engage maze goers into a fight. Those who are incapable will flee in terror while the figure will chase, which will be a pretty good clue as to where he is. Once engaged, any weapon and dreamotion can be used at their disposal and the challenge is to just simply best him in a fight (not to the death). Striking the figure even once will earn a victory and the skull mask will be granted.

The main clue is "'Ha! ha! ha! — he! he! he! — a very good joke, indeed — an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo — he! he! he! — over our wine — he! he! he!' // 'The Amontillado!' I said." One of the games is a dancing game where the tombs will light up a certain color and participants have to properly hit the correct corresponding floor panel (basically a music rhythm/DDR themed game). Should they make a perfect score, one of the tombs will open and have a crusty wine bottle in it. It has competitor and co-op mode.

Ahh, it's just like a domain puzzle! Don't worry, Eula. I'll take it on first. That way, if there are any traps or anything bad happens, it'll all be directed on me instead.
[Yeah, he really does think like that when it comes to his luck. He jumps right in and starts stepping on the lit up panels. He's actually doing really well, showing his talent and skill as an adventurer! ...For now.]
no subject
[ because that's practically asking for trouble, here?? what with bennett's inherent bad-luck magnet and all. but it does look like nothing has happened so far, so eula lets herself breath out a small sigh of relief as she watches him solve this puzzle. ]
I wasn't aware that you're already here, Bennett. Who else was with you?
no subject
[He rattles that off while doing his best to keep up with the pattern. But is it just him, or is it starting to get faster? It's definitely getting faster.]

But for the moment, they're expected to work together. Diluc has his own reasons for agreeing to do this - namely, that he would much rather do acrobatics than have his soul separated from his body, and he doesn't trust the performers not to force one or the other onto him. That he knows Eula to be graceful and well-trained also helps ease his mind in that regard.]
I'm sure I can manage.
[He gestures toward the tightrope.]
Ladies first.
no subject
and, well, if he doesn't need assistance, she'll just flip her hair and go on right ahead. she won't lie, it is a little daunting up close, but eula can easily get into the zone by taking a deep breath, loosen her shoulders, and stepping onto the rope once she's sure it's stable enough to walk on.
...hm, this isn't bad at all. at some point, she could've been trained to do this in her youth. that's how absurdly rough her noble training went, but she isn't sure the ragnvindr heir had gone through something like that. ]
I rolled a d20 and got a 5 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
He's also better trained for power, not grace, so his own first steps onto the tightrope are far more hesitant. Too much so, in fact; three steps in, he loses his footing and starts to tumble. Out of sheer instinct, he grabs for the tightrope itself to stop himself from falling entirely.]
no subject
Y-Yes, of course! Here, let me help...
[ She takes the clone (?) girl by the shoulder, confirming that she's ready to go with a firm nod. Before she moves, though, she looks over to the reflection behind her and asks: ]
Um, I don't suppose you could assist us...?
[ The purple-haired girl stares down at them, pure disdain painted on her face. She says nothing, making no indication of being willing to support them in any way. Noel sighs, having expected this, yet feeling disappointed (mostly in herself) all the same. ]
Figured as much... I'm sorry, but it looks like it's just the two of us.
no subject
It's all right. The double can't be too hard to carry around for a short while, depending on how long this maze is.
[ there doesn't seem to be an end in sight, however. but they may as well keep moving, while half-carrying eula's inebriated clone around. said clone can only make soft drunken groans for now, which is a relief to the real deal. ]
You'll have to excuse this one. The nation where I'm from has a flourishing wine trade, so it can't be helped. Even I'm not immune to such frivolities, but rest assured that I'm not the type to do this while on duty.
[ she still has some dignity, dammit... ]
hall of mirrors.
especially when his hands nearly collides with a person instead of a mirror. he barely catches his own arm mid-movement, before he laughs a bit sheepishly. ] Sorry 'bout that. [ he apologizes in an easygoing manner, not seeming to put much weight or thought into it. ]
Uh— Sure? I was getting pretty tired of my own reflection. [ he peers at the drunken version of the woman with obvious amusement coloring his features. ] Think I prefer yours. [ there's a wink to go along with his statement.
she might not be here for a long time, but a good one? ]
no subject
Hmph. Never heard of that one before.
[ that's not a lie, though. who would even hit on lawrence scum, anyway.
the drunken clone stirs, and mumbles something close to coherent. ]
Tha's a good one. Say it again... urp.
[ eula freezes, and almost drops her other self. is this really her, though? there has to be a mistake. ]
no subject
with that thought in mind, he gives her a small shrug. ] At least one of you like it. You might want to take some pointers from her. If you can't manage to smile now, you definitely won't be smiling in the afterlife, Miss. [ it's a statement to what he's experienced at least, but with that said, he does manage to reach out and grasp hold of... second her?
but, if eula notices, he is definitely looking at the both of them. they really are the same woman in every way. ]
(no subject)
hall of mirrors!
For example: he is certain that mirrors are not supposed to play a scene of him mistaking one of Black Tortoise's visitors as a threat and trying to block them entrance to the palace.
He's also pretty sure that never actually happened.
And more importantly, he's also certain that this young woman on the floor, sodden drunk, fell out of one of the mirrors. In the blink of an eye. Which means that the identical young woman trying to help her is most likely another visitor like himself.
So, without any ado, Century Egg shifts to her side and tosses an arm over his shoulder, ready to help heft up this stranger. )
These mirrors possess a strange magic, don't they?
( But that doesn't mean he can't talk to the woman trying to haul her clone out of here while they work. )
no subject
[ she sighs. the guy looks capable enough to be able to lift up her other lame self, but she'll offer her own shoulder anyway. ]
Now, then. Do you know where the proper way out is?
musical catacombs
Even as he lets out a drunken little giggle. The devil's tail he has swishing back and forth as he tilts his head. He has matching red horns too.]
Ehe, is that so? Well! Why don't we see how well you can do, Miss Eula Lawrence?
[Oh, he still seems to recognize her even as his face is red with drunkenness.]
It's a game and a musical one at that! It reminds me of the festivals in Mondstadt! How can you refuse the challenge? Ehe!
no subject
I often don't have enough time on my own to enjoy the festivals back home, but...
[ it is rather tempting. since when was the last time she'd let herself loose, anyway? ]
All right. Whoever wins will be treated by the loser to a cocktail. Does that sound fair, bard? [ he has a name......... ]
no subject
[Well well well. How can he refuse? Venti's eyes sparkle with the challenge because when it comes to being musically inclined he can't be beaten. But... She's also a dancer, is she not? It'll be a challenge that's sung about in the ballads for ages to come!]
Sure, let's play.
[He'll motion for her to take the second dance mat!]
musical catacombs
Even faced off against a couple of people, and a tipsy Tartaglia is willing to face off against a few more, or even try this other mode that seems to be on the game. Co-op!
But, he hears her criticism of the game, and a red-faced bright smile meets it with a gleam in his eye.]
Come join me then! This should prove no challenge for you then.
no subject
Of course it wouldn't be. But it wouldn't be a fair fight when one of us is too inebriated to stand on his two feet.
[ something something knight's honor. and also it's kind of pathetic to be partnered in that state anyway. ]
no subject
[He might be a little tispy, but he won't let his Snezhnayan honor be insulted here. He gestures to the pad next to him, for her to join him anyway.]
How about this. If I lose, you can go on your way. If I win, you have to play this "co-op" mode I've seen where both people work together to beat a song. I want to try it at least once, as a change of pace before I continue to trounce everyone who challenges me.
[It will be as chaotic as he can possibly make it.]
cirque du souleil
Yuto looks over at Eula with a confident looking smile.]
Yep, something like this is no problem for me!
[Doing it with a partner, however... It really depends on their synergy and how well they adapt. Or how fast. But this is a dream, maybe it'll be fine?]
no subject
[ the rope, at the very least, is thick enough for her to walk on. so she takes a deep breath and a few steps onto the shaky pathway, treating it like a catwalk more than anything with a proper poise and and a steely look in her eyes as she stares ahead. ]
no subject
After she step onto the tightrope, Yuto waits for take a couple more steps before he joins her. The rope shifts slightly from his weight joining Eula's, as he carefully walks behind her. He slung his scythe across his shoulders, seemingly casual and at ease.
The crowds watching them are quiet, watching them move. There may be a few comments, only to get hushed by their neighbours.]
musical catacombs
Couldn't agree more. It's not exactly high art to dance to the beat.
[
Cloud, your dance was literally a rhythm game.]It's definitely not what I'd compare to where I come from, anyway... I've had to do worse.
[ But in this outfit? ]
MY MC FR FR
So you do an eye for the fine arts.
[ does he...? ]
But doing this game in a dress is the least of your worries, unless you accidentally step on your skirt and fall. Can you handle it?
😊
