[ OPEN ] Now that I'm older my heart's colder
Who: Kaeya Alberich, Diluc Ragnvindr, and YOU
Which: Open Interactive Dream Log
Where: N/A
What: Dreamshare with the child versions of Kaeya and Diluc!
Warnings: potential angst in the second half??
[ our dream opens up to a lovely view of the dawn winery, its manor and its sprawling grounds.
the hour is late, the sun a heavy orange orb hanging against the horizon, the warm orange-reds of sunset streaking the western sky, fading into the deep blue of night above the manor, a handful of stars just beginning to wink into existence. though enough light remains to see by, it is growing dimmer by the second, and it isn't long before several spots of soft white lights blink to life across the vineyards, little faerie lights strung between poles across the grounds. it's chilly, though there's no snow or frost on the ground, the air still nips, and many of the trees around the manor and hemming the perimeter are either naked, or nearing it, the last dregs of autumn clinging to their branches. winter is here, though it's only just beginning.
but neither the dark nor the cold is enough to stop the two young boys who dash across the grounds, flitting between the rows of grapevines. they're dressed in warm fur-lined cloaks, scarves and mittens, and they squeal and screech as they run. one boy, with wild scarlet hair, lunges at the second boy, with ice blue eyes (one hidden beneath an eyepatch) and a darker complexion, nearly snagging him by the cloak, but just missing. ]
Hey, hey, you're too fast, Kae!
Then hurry up, Luc!!
[ but the little red-haired boy won't be put off by the challenge, and he sprints forward even harder, lunging again - ]
Woah!!
[ both boys go tumbling together in a tangle, crashing through one of the grapevines, right at your feet.
the dream shifts.
the gentle rolling hills of mondstadt fade, and instead you find yourself in an old fortress, or castle? it's difficult to tell from the inside. the walls are stone, intricately carved, and while there is beauty here, there is also decay, and something.. sick, something broken. the high, proud walls are dingy, there are cracks in the stone, piles of debris in the corners, and through the windows you can see that the "sky" is a terrible, bloody red that dyes the room in unsettling crimson. that same "sky" stretches over the city that can be glimpsed through the mirror - once proud spires are broken and crumbling, and the streets are thin and quiet, without the usual bustle and merry noise that comes along with what you'd expect of such a large civilization. the overall atmosphere is sad, oppressive, damaged, shattered.
the boy is here. not the fire-haired one, but the boy with the icy eye and deep blue hair, and he seems a few years younger. he's wrapped in a traveling cloak, and seems to be waiting for someone, or something. he's clearly apprehensive, his little fingers tugging at his frayed, too-long sleeves. he doesn't pace, only stands stock still, staring at the door, the red light of the "sky" in his hair. at last, the door creaks open and a tall man walks through, with hair the same color as the boy's, also wrapped in a traveling cloak. the boy tenses, biting his lip. ]
It's time to go, Kaeya.
[ the boy swallows, and nods, taking the man's offered hand, his voice trembling. ]
Okay.

1st part, gives them both a huge hug ;;
But something is different.
He sees two kids playing around and, at first, he's surprised with a scene unfolding before him, before another smiles warms his face. The children eventually tumble down and end up right in front of him. Aether quickly kneels down to check on them.]
Hey, are you two okay? That was quite a crash.
[There's a dull pang of pain in his chest, as he wonders if this is a dream of childhood days that both Kaeya and Diluc seem to be missing so much.]
no subject
reaching down, kaeya snags diluc by the hand to help him up. ]
I'm.. I'm fine..
[ kaeya starts, wary, his single icy eye fixed on aether's face. ]
Who are you?
no subject
Are you a traveler? Did you come from Liyue? Or Dragonspine? Or somewhere farther away?
no subject
He doesn't stand up, not wanting to tower over the two boys.]
You're right. I'm a traveler from a very faraway place. I've been to Liyue, Inazuma and Dragonspine... but Mondstadt is a very special place to me.
[He presses a hand over his heart. He's not lying at all.]
It's been so long since the last time I've been here... Would you like to show me around? I'm curious if it's any different from what I remember. I can offer you stories from my travels in exchange.
no subject
[ he's been to all of those places?? kaeya looks impressed, and interested enough that some of his wariness is burning off. traveling and adventuring is like, the coolest thing!
he has a hundred questions. is it very cold in dragonspine? did he see any cool monsters in liyue? did it take a long time to get to inazuma?? kaeya shifts his weight from foot to foot, clearly a little starstruck. ]
We can show you around!
no subject
But his chest puffs with pride at that last bit about Mondstadt.]
Of course this place is the most special. We're the City of Freedom!
[Like Kaeya, he's full of questions. But for now, he holds them in.]
Yeah, we can show you around! Where do you want to go first?
no subject
Yes. [Aether nods to Diluc.] I enjoy this freedom a lot. Mondstadt is such a welcoming place.
[His own smile brightens, before he finally stands up from the ground.]
Maybe you could show me your favourite places?
no subject
he exchanges a look with diluc. ]
.. the fort?
[ or treehouse, to be more precise, built just for them in a large oak near the perimeter of the vineyards. it's definitely the coolest place kaeya can think of. ]
no subject
The fort.
[It's agreed upon.]
Before we take you, Traveler... what's your name?
[Kind of an important detail!]
no subject
The traveller hesitates.]
...I'm Aether.
[It probably won't hurt to tell them that. They didn't know him when they were so young anyway. Will either of them remember this dream?]
no subject
[ kaeya smiles. ]
That's a nice name. You have to promise not to tell anyone else about the fort, it's our secret base.
[ nevermind that everyone at the winery knows about the fort.. but they all enjoy the pretense together. he tugs at aether's sleeve. ]
This way!
no subject
[There's a vague sense of familiarity in it, a byproduct of Diluc's actual self pressing against the childhood version of himself in the dream. Not that he puts it together--instead, he just smiles and nods in agreement with Kaeya's compliment.
Soon, the three of them are headed toward the not-so-secret fort.]
Can you climb? It's up pretty high.
no subject
I promise not to tell anyone.
[And he follows the boys, heart warmed when he sees them so happy and carefree.]
I climbed many tall mountains... even reached the summit of Dragonspine! So a tall tree won't be a problem to me.
[He boasts, hoping that this will pique the boys' curiosity even further.]
no subject
also aether's boasting absolutely works. kaeya's eye lights up brightly. ]
Woah.. really?
[ that sounds super dangerous and also super cool! he trots along as they move through the grapevines and toward the edge of the vineyards, closer to the big oak. ]
no subject
We're not allowed anywhere near Dragonspine. Father won't even take us to the base camp to play in the snow because it's so dangerous.
[Young boys get ideas and could easily run off up the mountain!]
Is it as cold as they say?
no subject
I'm not surprised that you're not allowed there. It's very dangerous and cold.
[He doesn't want to scare them too much, but at the same time doesn't want to encourage them when they're so small... even though this is only a dream.]
You'd need a lot of preparations and experience... Maybe when you're older we can travel there together. If anything happens, I'll be sure to protect you.
[He gives them a reassuring smile.]
no subject
[ he's very cold resistant, aether!! anyway, they're drawing near to the fort now, so kaeya slows, and turns to their new adventurer friend. ]
Okay, now you have to pinky promise not to ever tell anyone about this place. It's a secret.
no subject
[(Affectionate.)
Diluc doesn't have his Pyro Vision yet, but he prefers the warm even now.]
You have to pinky promise both of us. It's very serious.
no subject
Aether smiles fondly, before nodding.]
Sure. [And he leans forward, extending his hand with a pinky out for a promise.]
I'll promise you both I won't tell a soul about your super secret fort.
no subject
No you're weird!
[ NO U!! kaeya sticks out his tongue (lovingly) before turning toward aether and very solemnly hooking their pinkies together. he'll wait for diluc to do the same, and when all their pinkies are curled together he smiles. ]
You triple swear pinkie promise? So that if you break it the wind will blow you down a well?
