Owl Rescue

✵ MINI EVENT: OWL RESCUE ✵

Late in the month, the blizzard has reached its peak and the skies seem strangely dark and ominous, a soft jingling of bells followed by deep, baritone voice echoes through the skies.

Gone away are the reindeer
Out to play are the dreamers
To lead their return, we gather in snow
All to bring the lost presents home

In the shadows we can build a snowman
To protect the sleigh that's full and bright.
Mimics will attack, and we'll say, "No, man!"
Only the real presents here will do!

We'll raise our mugs to the fire
Raise our voices higher and higher
Then we'll slash through our foes
From head down to their toes
All to save this Christmas Wonderland

In the city we can make some string lights
Beautiful and bright just like the stars
With a little magic, we'll be alright
And top everything off with just a Star

A star so big and bright
with magic all around
shining with all its might
making the world go 'round!

So come join us, all ye citizens
of this little festive town.
Guard your hearts with love and laughter,
and we'll bring this foul Grinch down!

With a mighty bellow the gusting winds clear and for a moment the morning skies seem beautiful and bright, as if the strange blizzard storm had never appeared at all. And then, in perhaps questionably late fashion, a large man dressed in red and astride a giant reindeer descends down to the central plaza.

"Ho ho ho! So this is where that bastard's been trying to hide, eh? I'll give it some credit—it chose a powerful world for its mischief…even if it could still use some work. And it's still just a baby—miracle it's lasted this long." The man, many of which will recognize as the fabled Santa Claus turns to look at the still run down buildings. For a man who is known to being "jolly" and full of holiday spirit, he looks as if he's about to head into war with the large axe at its his side and hardened expression. Just as he's about to say more, he clicks his tongue as a loud SCREEEEEECH is heard in the distance.

"But it won't be around much longer if you kids don't do anything about what's coming."

In the next moment, a large fiery owl large enough to overshadow half the town hovers in the air, the flames dangerously drifting from her feathers.

WHERE ARE THEY…

WHERE ARE MY CHILDREN!!

Her voice shakes the ground, the fire expanding outward as she gives one last heartrending cry filled with anger and agony.

PROMPTS

It's a confusing mess as two large figures have appeared at once, but it's clear that the owl's needs take precedence. With Santa's help, the owl will shrink small enough so that she can wait in the Plaza alongside and wait for those willing to find her eggs and owlets. But she watches over it with an anxious eye, the flames occasionally rising whenever there is a sound of one nearby. Everyone better work fast!

A. Talk with Santa. With Santa remaining with the owl, some may wish to speak to him while the others are working to find the baby owls. Although he plans to speak again once this is over, he will go ahead and answer any questions people may have. All questions may be asked in this thread, and as mentioned in the Game Notes, this will not be an IC thread. It is encouraged for questions to be asked now as it will help speed up dispensing information later.

B. Owl Egg Hunt. The eggs are scattered throughout the town Reverein, the nearby forests, and the lake. As if sensing their danger, the eggs have hidden themselves in various nooks and crannies, which can make it quite difficult to find. Hopefully no one accidentally tries to cook one. However, there are some clues. They will sparkle and will sometimes wiggle and roll out of their hiding place. They can also be "lured" out by friendly, positive emotions, or towards anyone that might exude a feeling of safety, security, and protection. However, if they're frightened the eggs will start to hatch. They sprout wings, legs, or even the beak to try and either escape or protect themselves. The eggs may also take on elemental characteristics, such as turning into a fireball, a block of ice, a giant rock, or a mini cyclone. Another threat will be the snoyotes as the sly buggers will follow would be rescuers to find the egg and try to snatch them and run off.

C. Owlet Panic. For the eggs that have already hatched, the owlets will be panicking and very emotional, causing a great environmental disruption around them. From fire storms to massive blizzards, the babies are out of control. Fortunately they're easy to spot—as well as hear. Their high pitched screeches can be heard from long distances. Calming emotions will be key in trying to soothe them, though dremoation abilities may be needed to get to them first.

D. Owlsitter. Whether already hatched or bursting out after returning to mother owl, the little owlets can be quite the handful. They're born already large enough to fly and while they aren't skilled, they will flutter about here and there. Essentially toddlers, they will get into anything that might interest them and cause mischief. With the owlets capable of casting elemental magic, that can pose a problem as sometimes it can go awry.

E. Snoyotes. The snoyotes are a cross between snake and coyote and they rely on their stealth skills rather than offensive power. They will stick to the shadows and can camouflage themselves well. When they do need to fight, they are tenacious and will try to sink their venomous fangs into their assailant. The venom is paralytic and is potent and fast acting. Although not always enough to kill, if enough venom makes its way to the heart then there might be trouble. As mentioned they will follow those looking for eggs to try and snatch them first, but some may be hunting other eggs. It's not necessary to kill them, driving them off to the Wild Canyons will do.

» BONUS: FANG COLLECTION. Although highly potent, the venom stored within the fangs of the snoyotes can be used in anti-venom remedies (and poisons). Collecting them will need some care. In addition, defanging a snoyote is one way to keep it away for those unwilling to kill. Their fangs will grow back so would be an effective way to farm fangs later.

Thank you, sir: I can try to help in any way I can. My dog can also assist in calming the birds down.

Arf, arf, arf!

(Pooka chimes in to join the owlet calming session as well. She does have the idea of singing the lullaby her grandmama used to sing to her when she was younger, though she didn’t use on baby birds in ever. Maybe that could help them out.)

I got an idea: why not if I can try to calm them down with a lullaby?

If you would, I'd be most grateful. I'm drawing a blank on such melodies, Miss...?

[At least the little burning birds aren't attacking him, but he's worried they'll fly off and get themselves into even deeper trouble. Not that he'll admit that part out loud.]

Anya. You can call me Anya, sir. And my dog is called Pooka too.

Bark, bark, bark! Woof!

I happen to know of a lullaby that my grandmama used to sing to me when I was younger. She even had it incorporated into a music box as a gift to me years ago.

(She then proceeds to whistle to get the owlets out of their state of frantic panic, hopefully it can get their attention so she can sing them to sleep or even calm them down.)
lonelysmiles: (Uh Oh)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-01-25 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Then by all means, sing! Hopefully the little ones will calm themselves when you do!

[Meanwhile, his shadow is corralling the owlets so they don't get too far. The last thing they need is for one of the little things to rush off and into the maw of a snoyote.]

(As the owlets are being corralled by Alastor’s shadow to keep them from running off from their watch, Anya proceeds to sing the childhood lullaby that still remains in her mind even after she initially lost her memory for that long.

While she is singing to them, the baby owlets started to feel less urgency to run off or being on fire, sensing a calm aura from her voice and begin to happily chirp as the fire slowly dies out.)
lonelysmiles: (Wistful)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-01-25 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[Alastor also relaxes. Oh thank goodness. It's working.]

[A little too well apparently. One of the owlets manages to fly juuuust enough to perch on his head, seeming to think it makes the perfect nest.]

[...He's just sort of resigned. This is fine.]

(As it turns out, weaving in positive dreamotion energy into the lullaby actually works on the baby owlets as they are starting to relax. Well, maybe a little too well as it also manages to make Pooka slightly sleepy from listening to it alone.

The little dog yawns rather loudly as he tries to fight the urge to snooze off all the sudden. Anya might want to work on improving this skill weaving after this.)
lonelysmiles: It's adorable! (Look At You Threatening Me!)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-01-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
[My, my, my. That's quite impressive control. He wonders if she's had magical training of any sort in the past.]

[Still...Alastor covers his mouth with one hand as he gives a yawn, showing off his very sharp fangs.]

Forgive me, my dear, but I believe that should be enough lest we all start drifting off and giving those nasty creatures an opening to exploit.

[personal profile] grandduchess_anya 2022-01-25 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay then, I’ll stop just right about now.

(Phew, that was a close call. She is worried that she might put a strain on her voice as she just started weaving dreamotion energy into her singing and she might be this close sending her, Pooka, and Alastor to sleep if she isn’t being careful.)

I think that I almost put Pooka to sleep too soon.
lonelysmiles: Reality! (The Purist Entertainment)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-01-25 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
[Alastor give shis head a slight shake, the owlet on his head nipping an ear in protest. The smile never leaves his face, but his eyes narrow in a wince.]

Well then, getting moving should help significantly! Get the old blood pumping and wake us all right up while we get these little ones back where they belong!
grandduchess_anya: (Happy)

[personal profile] grandduchess_anya 2022-01-25 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Certainly, I can do that. Nothing that some stretching and moving about can’t do.

(She then picks up Pooka from where he is standing and begins to gently stroke his head to get him to stay awake.)

Alright, Pooka. The gentleman says that we should get started on moving about from falling asleep too soon. How about we should do some play time before bringing the owlets to their mother?

Bark!
lonelysmiles: (Calming Down)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-01-26 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
That's the spirit! [Alastor swings his arm energetically before giving another wince as the owlet on his head gives him another nip.] Though maybe if this one went to sleep it wouldn't be so bad.

[He doesn't want to upset the owlet by removing it from his head...but it means he gets to suffer. Yay.]
grandduchess_anya: (Happy)

[personal profile] grandduchess_anya 2022-01-26 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Bark, bark, bark! Woof, woof!

(Pooka is beginning to slowly get his eyes from falling asleep and starts off the day by energetically chasing his tails like all dogs do as a bit of a warm up.)

I will say that my dog can be very funny at times, but he does mean well.

(Picking up a stick from the ground, she begins to tell Pooka that she will throw the stick and he will need to fetch it back a couple of times. She eventually does throw it (but not too hard that it would be flying far away) and Pooka runs off to find it, returning back happily with the stick on his muzzle.)
lonelysmiles: (After All...)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-01-26 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[Alastor takes a step or two away from Pooka. He's not a fan of dogs in general. Not even cute little puppies like this one.]

Well, I suppose he has his uses, hmm?

[Alastor's smile tightens a bit with displeasure. However, he simply begins walking to get his own blood flowing. The owlet on his head chirps happily from its high perch.]
grandduchess_anya: (Laughter)

[personal profile] grandduchess_anya 2022-01-26 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
(Chuckling in delight to see Pooka returning with the stick, Anya then throws it again and she proceeds to stretch a bit while waiting Pooka goes off to find the stick. As that happens, she is starting to wonder if she can harness the dreamotion energy into her talents to restore things and help the Realm of Dreams.

Pooka eventually returns with the stick once more and happily barks as she scoops him up with her hands to give him a cuddle.)
lonelysmiles: Ah memories... (So Many Orphans)

[personal profile] lonelysmiles 2022-02-01 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
[Alastor idly starts playing "Moonlight Serenade" to pass the time as they walk. It also seems to help keep the little owlets calm.]

[Aside from the chaos of the owlets and having to keep an eye out for snoyotes, it's a lovely day in Reverein overall.]
grandduchess_anya: (Confidant)

[personal profile] grandduchess_anya 2022-02-01 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
(Dog and human continue on with the play as Anya throws the stick for Pooka again and he chases after it while she runs after him as not to lose him. The pupper is able to find the stick again and he returns to the arms of happy owner.

Hopefully the owlets will stay calm by the time they will have to return to their worried mother.)
