{ haunted carnival | test drive #08 - october 2022 }

HAUNTED CARNIVAL
Full details on everything can be found here, but an important reminder that this event log doubles as our Test Drive Meme and information can be found in this section.
This means any outside characters participating in the log are canonly logged as appearing in Songerein in October and will remain in Songerein from the IC date of October 25 through 31 (this log is forward dated to the 25th). However, outside characters can only thread within this log, so for those seriously considering the game, you are welcome to use non-festival prompts for your toplevels. Anyone who apps in and is accepted will have their character count October as their first time in the game without any disruption, so all content will carry over. Those who do not apply will disappear which should not seem too unusual as people randomly disappear already, however players in game can choose to retcon and pretend a character was never there to begin with if it would be easier; or even think their presence was just a dream.
IMPORTANT! All outside characters MUST have "TDM" in their subject line, even if you might not app. This will help people differentiate those who are already in the game and those who are not.
TDM threads are required for samples. Refer to the Game Info for general information and feel free to toss any questions here. Reserves will open Tuesday, October 25th and Applications will open on November 1st. Our application cycles are bi-monthly so the next cycle after won't be until January.

I. CARNIVAL FUN

The moment a guest enters the carnival grounds, there is a high chance (read: optional) they will find themselves changed in some way to fit the spooky, haunted atmosphere. Instead of just wearing a vampire costume, the character will actually turn into one. Of course, how much of a transformation varies between complete to partial changes. It should be noted that this is only a cosmetic and ability change—no matter what someone changes into, they won't have any personality changes…unless one of the carnival attendants cast a small enchantment to make it so. Of course this is by chance as well (read: optional).

Caramel Apples: Tart green apples dipped in caramel and decorated with chocolate to look like they’re covered in spiders and spider webs. Eating one of these will have the dreamer feeling crafty and industrious, just like spiders themselves often are. Also, the idea of eating bugs (or even other spiders?!) suddenly seems strangely appealing…
Cherry Blood Popcorn: Popcorn drenched in cherry syrup and decorated with candy bones. The combination of sugar and dreamotion energy leaves the eater feeling giddy and cheerful, somewhat in contrast to the gruesome appearance of the treat itself.
Funnel "Brain" Cakes: Funnel cakes colored to look like brains when served. Comes in regular or zombie brain varieties. Eating one makes you feel lethargic and hungry, like the only thing that matters is your next snack fix, but you’re not willing to do much more than shamble toward it.
Mummies in a Blanket: Small hot dogs wrapped in biscuit dough and decorated to look like mummies. After eating this, you may or may not want to wrap yourself into a blanket and take a nap—ideally somewhere dark and spooky.

NERF Gun Shooting Gallery: Use dreamotion to shoot foam darts from a gun at various ghostly and ghouly targets lined up on a platform. Advanced players may want to try their hand at making the guns shoot other objects. Water? Fire? Glitter bombs? The only limit is one’s imagination.
Ring Toss: A series of witch hats are lined up, and the objective is to toss rings on the hats for points. Did something just peek up from under one of the hats? It’s probably nothing to worry about.
Potion Bottles: A variation of the milk bottles game wherein you throw balls to knock over flasks and beakers filled with strangely-colored liquid. In most cases, the spilled potion is totally harmless. Once in a while, however, it may have some interesting effects on the player and/or the booth itself.
Slime Pit: There’s a giant pit of slime with a sign next to it: prizes within for those willing to get a bit messy! Said prizes range from giant candy bars to random silly toys to skeletal limbs…? Oh that belongs to the skeleton having fun in the pit, they might want it back.
II. ATTRACTIONS

B. Wild Carousel. The creatures on this carousel are not just colorful painted steeds but are more frightening in nature and looking more undead than living. Skeletal horses, direwolves, fanged deer with bloody horns. What makes this ride truly terrifying, however, is that the creatures are alive, restrained only by the pole stuck through them. But there are times when they manage to break free, causing havoc as they run through the park. The only good news is they don't attack, instead aiming for the carnival food as if hungry. Either hang on or help capture them back!

D. Spinning Bumper Cups. A combination of the classic bumper cars and spinning cups rides, this attraction has its riders in skull shaped bumper cars that will randomly spin. Riders have the ability to fire off "pumpkin bombs" at the others, which will splatter pumpkin goop to slow down their car. It will also make the car spin for a few rotations. Dreamotion will also help boost the speed, stabilize a spinning car faster, and make the pumpkin bombs more explosive. Just be careful—the barrier around the arena is made of bones and therefore quite brittle. It's not unusual to see a car spin out and lose control driving through the carnival grounds. Stop the runaway car and bring it back! Or shoot people with pumpkin bombs.

F. Other Rides. There are plenty of rides and attractions at the carnival, too many to list all of them here. A roller coaster, tower drop, gravitron, bungee jumps, pendulum ship—whatever one might think exists, it's there in all its twisted nightmare glory. One thing they all have in common is the more fear and thrill and screams generated, the faster they go. Just hope the ride doesn't stall and get stuck…
III. HAUNTING CLUES

Although the main purpose for these prompts is to find the clues, anyone is free to use them for general use and not focus on getting the clue. For those who do participate, we'll be asking for thread during our Activity Check! Those who are TDMing regardless of application can also have their threads counted by commenting to this thread and following the directions.

The main clue here is "Villains!' I shrieked. 'Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear up the planks! Here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!" To help both those who have turned into dolls as well as get the clue, everyone has to find the right place where some candied hearts are hidden. Fortunately the "blood trail" (it's raspberry syrup) will help lead them to the right place.

The main clue is "And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting // On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door // Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning // Shall be lifted – nevermore". To get out of this house, they have to first look for the bust that has the red eyed raven on it. This will be tricky as there will be many ravens with different colored eyes. Once they do, there will be a small picture frame. They must manifest one or more of the images they are seeing and capture it into the frame. This is simply done by waving it like a net, but the manifestation can move around. This can be as easy or difficult as a player wants, and how affected the character is from what they see and hear can also be a factor. The more affected they are, the easier it is to manifest but difficult to capture. The less affected, it will be more difficult to manifest as they have to tap into that raw fear, but will be easier to capture.

The main clue is "Who dares?" he demanded hoarsely of the courtiers who stood near him --"who dares insult us with this blasphemous mockery? Seize him and unmask him --that we may know whom we have to hang at sunrise, from the battlements!" There is a red clad figure wearing a skull mask. He will randomly bust through the hay walls and engage maze goers into a fight. Those who are incapable will flee in terror while the figure will chase, which will be a pretty good clue as to where he is. Once engaged, any weapon and dreamotion can be used at their disposal and the challenge is to just simply best him in a fight (not to the death). Striking the figure even once will earn a victory and the skull mask will be granted.

The main clue is "'Ha! ha! ha! — he! he! he! — a very good joke, indeed — an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo — he! he! he! — over our wine — he! he! he!' // 'The Amontillado!' I said." One of the games is a dancing game where the tombs will light up a certain color and participants have to properly hit the correct corresponding floor panel (basically a music rhythm/DDR themed game). Should they make a perfect score, one of the tombs will open and have a crusty wine bottle in it. It has competitor and co-op mode.
Zhongli || Genshin Impact || OTA
[A carnival such as this is certainly a novelty to behold, and Zhongli intends to take his time taking in all the sights and sounds. And as for him, he finds with great amusement that he’s undergone a change of his own, dressed as a vampire. The fine suit is not dissimilar to his usual clothes, though the cape is a new addition. And the fangs seem to stick out from his lips no matter what he does.]
[It’s possible to find him nudging at his fangs with his tongue or thumb, clearly not very used to them being so long, but his expression will lighten in merriment when he sees another person also in costume.]
This carnival is quite a spectacle to behold, isn’t it? Such a lively event to celebrate the changing of the seasons. And I must say, your costume is quite becoming of you.
[He tries to be polite about the whole thing, but he can’t help but have his eyes drift to someone’s neck from time to time…]
Haunted Food - Caramel Apples
[With his new fangs, trying the unique foods seem to be a little difficult to eat (and strangely enough, he finds himself shying away from stalls where the scent of garlic is very pungent), but Zhongli makes do with sampling the foods he can. Though it may be a little difficult, the caramel apples were too tempting to pass up. He knows a certain friend of his would certainly love them…]
[Though his fangs make it a little difficult, he does manage to bite into and consume one apple, and finds them to be quite tasty. But halfway through the apple, he finds his gaze drawn to a food stall selling… quite strange foodstuffs.]
Caramelized spiders? Strange, and yet the care to ensure such a creature was preserved in the cooking process takes great skill. And genuine eye of newt? Well, I do know that certain parts of an animal’s body are considered delicacies by different cultures… It would be a shame to not sample such unique culinary creations.
[Is he seriously going to sample these weird foods?? Better stop him before he makes a choice he regrets! Or dare you to try something with him..?]
Abandoned House
[It was the ravens that had drawn Zhongli into the abandoned house, though he can’t help but e curious about the forgotten paintings and busts within. Any place of old and ancient art and architecture is bound to draw his curiosity. But as he walks through, he can’t help but frown at the images, noticing as they become more and more… familiar?]
[The pictures themselves do not seem to be frightening; in fact, they seem almost calm and serene. Images of Glaze Lilies in wild fields draw his attention first, as do the peaceful countrysides of Liyue. But what makes him pause is a painting depicting an image of a woman. Her back is turned to the viewer, but she is wearing a long, indigo robe, and a Glaze Lily is tucked into her hair. Zhongli halts before this image, his eyes growing wide.]
That… it cannot be…
[And it’s then that the voices begin to whisper. Soft, and gentle, like drifting dust, but soon becoming loud enough to be noticable.]
"This is the mark of our pledge, and it is also my challenge to you."
"All my wisdom is hidden within this stone dumbbell."
"If you can unlock it—“
[Zhongli’s gaze turns to another painting, this time one depicting a strange, cube-like object. Another whisper echoes in the halls.]
”In the end, you could never open it, could you Morax?”
[Though not particularly scary-looking imagery to an outsider, Zhongli cannot bring himself to look away, and those who look closely will see the way his eyes are wide with shock, how his back is stone-still, and how his hands tremble slightly at his sides.]
Wildcard
[Got something you’d like to try out? Feel free to write up a starter, or PM me here or at
costume change!
It certainly--
[ Wait. His costume?
Not changing his appearance much--beyond the color of his leaves--had been a deliberate choice, and he was thankful the magic of the carnival didn't force him one into either. It did not once occur to him that someone else might think otherwise. ]
This isn't a costume.
[ Surprisingly, he wasn't anticipating this. ]
no subject
[Zhongli blinks, taking in Trahearne's appearance. This... was not a costume? He straightens a little.]
Ah, forgive me. I am so used to seeing humans dressed up in elaborate costumes, that I had assumed you were wearing one. Please forgive me for my oversight.
[The last thing he wants to do is accidentally offend someone.]
I take it you are not human yourself?
[He doesn't say it accusingly, but rather in a curious manner.]
no subject
It's all right. I did not realise I would cause confusion. [ He reaches up to run a hand through his hair...leaves. They bounce back into place much like a houseplant's might. ]
You would be correct. I am sylvari. The only one here in Reverein.
[ He turns his attention back to Zhongli, studying him for a brief moment. ]
And forgive me if I come across as rude, but it sounds as though you're not human either.
[ That "yourself" stood out to him. And he's come to learn that there are a lot of non-humans out there across realms that looks perfectly human to him. It's...confusing. ]
no subject
[A plant-like entity isn't even super common in Teyvat. Sure there were the regisvines or whopperflowers, but this being seems far more intelligent than them. Maybe closer to the Aranara of Sumeru, though much more humanoid. It's a curious thing to consider.]
[At the question, Zhongli visibly pauses, blinking in surprise. He stares for a moment, before letting out a small, amused huff.]
You are a rather perceptive individual. I admit, I am not quite human myself. Though, I would appreciate discretion on the matter; not all are familiar with my true nature.
no subject
But he would not be as good with people as he was if it weren't for that perceptiveness. ]
Ah, so it's a secret. [ Trahearne nods, placing a hand over his chest. If there's one thing he's good at, it's not blabbing. ] And it's safe with me.
[ That brings up even more questions, though. Is this just a form? Does he look otherwise normally?
First things first, though-- ]
I hope your name isn't a secret.

Haunted food
Mmm... Maybe it's like Sugar-Frosted Slime?
no subject
[Zhongli turns, blinking curiously at the young man beside him. He brings a hand to his chin in consideration.]
I have never heard of such a dish. Is that something you have eaten before?
no subject
[He sounds so proud of this, like "yep I took slime parts and sprinkled sugar on them to make a meal!"]
no subject
[He briefly gives the boy a once-over, noticing the Vision on his hip. A Mondstadt-style Vision, huh..? So, he's one of Barbatos's children.]
Forgive me for prying, but I take it you are a member of the Adventurer's Guild? I noticed the Vision on your waist.

Costume change
Not really, he's just not good at this. But hey, you can see his face?
Still, he takes the compliment.]
As does yours. And you seem to be a bit more yourself.
[He assumes.]
no subject
Ah, yes... I must ask for your forgiveness on that. I was not quite myself that day. I do not usually act so untoward to people like that. I did not mean to turn my spear to you, nor to entrap you in an unfair contract. It appears that even I was not free from the dragons' influence.
[He even let his horns and claws show, how uncivilized.]
no subject
Influenced or not, the contract probably saved us both an intense battle.
[Ira is not going to hold grudges. Especially if it was beyond anyone's control.]
no subject
[Corroded might be a strong word, but still. He was glad that his old domain still held true.]
I hope you are doing well since that time?
no subject
[There's a note of concern there, because corroded is indeed strong.]
But to answer your question, I am, yes. A few burns here and there but nothing permanent.
[And maybe a few bad dreams.]

Abandoned House
All of this is definitely affecting Zhongli and Aether can't just watch any longer. He's already seen too much, for which he will apologize to the man later, but now...]
Mister Zhongli...
[He tries to catch the other's attention: first with words, then with a gentle touch to the arm. Hopefully, he won't scare him.]
Are you okay?
no subject
Ah... Traveller. I did not see you there...
[The whispers fade, just a little, but they are still present. Zhongli lets out a small sigh, looking at the picture of the strange artifact before him.]
I... am managing. I had not expected to be confronted with... this.
[Which is fairly strange, because the pictures aren't even scary? They just look calm and serene, if a bit abstract.]
no subject
Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you.
[He's never thought he would be see Zhongli this surprised. Aether looks ahead at the image, before his gaze shifts back to the archon.]
What exactly... is this? You don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but you know... I will always listen.
[Just like he's listened to so many other stories of his companions.]
no subject
It is alright. As it has been said, to share one's hardships can make the burden of carrying them easier to bear.
[Still, it takes him a few moments before he speaks again.]
I am sure you remember when we had repaired the Guizhong Ballista while we were preparing the Rite of Parting, and are aware that Cloud Retainer was the one who worked on creating it. However, Cloud Retainer was not the only one to have worked on the device. It was worked on and developed by another... that for whom the Ballista is named. Back when Liyue was first developing as a nation, its people settled not in the Harbour, but in the Guili Assembly. In ancient times, it was a prosperous land, overseen not by one god, but several.
[He slowly opens his eyes, looking over at the painting of the woman again. The woman in the indigo robe, facing away, amidst a sea of glaze lilies. When he speaks again, his voice is softer, full of reminiscence and melancholy.]
One of which, was the God of Dust, known as Guizhong.
Caramel Apples
He's walking around with Zhongli, watching him trying to take a bite of an apple, looking at it questioningly. Then his gaze shifts towards the stall.
Caramel... What? ]
Are you certain it is even safe to?
no subject
[That's what Zhongli is assuming, at least. But he doesn't seem to be making the most sound of judgment right now.]
Would you like to sample something as well? This could be an opportunity to try a new cultural cuisine.
[It's literally not??]
no subject
[ Just his words of wisdom. And caution. While Xiao doesn't like to be... Incapacitated in any sort of way... If Rex Lapis happens to want to just enjoy? He is all but free to. ]
I... Will try the same. If you are.
no subject
[It is wise wisdom! Xiao isn't wrong to be cautious. But for some reason, Zhongli just... really wants to try these weird foods. He has no idea why, but he really does.]
Very well, then. How about we each choose one item to sample, and we can each see how they taste? That way we are only sampling a small number of food items.
OOPS
[ Look, Xiao is just saying that there is a possibility for it. That they should be prepared for something happening or something strange. They can't really do much more beyond that.
And it's fine to try weird things here. That's what they are meant for, right? Xiao understands that much. ]
I will select one after you.
