{ haunted carnival | test drive #08 - october 2022 }

HAUNTED CARNIVAL

Full details on everything can be found here, but an important reminder that this event log doubles as our Test Drive Meme and information can be found in this section.

This means any outside characters participating in the log are canonly logged as appearing in Songerein in October and will remain in Songerein from the IC date of October 25 through 31 (this log is forward dated to the 25th). However, outside characters can only thread within this log, so for those seriously considering the game, you are welcome to use non-festival prompts for your toplevels. Anyone who apps in and is accepted will have their character count October as their first time in the game without any disruption, so all content will carry over. Those who do not apply will disappear which should not seem too unusual as people randomly disappear already, however players in game can choose to retcon and pretend a character was never there to begin with if it would be easier; or even think their presence was just a dream.

IMPORTANT! All outside characters MUST have "TDM" in their subject line, even if you might not app. This will help people differentiate those who are already in the game and those who are not.

TDM threads are required for samples. Refer to the Game Info for general information and feel free to toss any questions here. Reserves will open Tuesday, October 25th and Applications will open on November 1st. Our application cycles are bi-monthly so the next cycle after won't be until January.

I. CARNIVAL FUN

The moment a guest enters the carnival grounds, there is a high chance (read: optional) they will find themselves changed in some way to fit the spooky, haunted atmosphere. Instead of just wearing a vampire costume, the character will actually turn into one. Of course, how much of a transformation varies between complete to partial changes. It should be noted that this is only a cosmetic and ability change—no matter what someone changes into, they won't have any personality changes…unless one of the carnival attendants cast a small enchantment to make it so. Of course this is by chance as well (read: optional).

A. Haunted Food. While there is some standard fare carnival food around, the Haunted Carnival has some unique items with even more interesting effects:
Caramel Apples: Tart green apples dipped in caramel and decorated with chocolate to look like they’re covered in spiders and spider webs. Eating one of these will have the dreamer feeling crafty and industrious, just like spiders themselves often are. Also, the idea of eating bugs (or even other spiders?!) suddenly seems strangely appealing…
Cherry Blood Popcorn: Popcorn drenched in cherry syrup and decorated with candy bones. The combination of sugar and dreamotion energy leaves the eater feeling giddy and cheerful, somewhat in contrast to the gruesome appearance of the treat itself.
Funnel "Brain" Cakes: Funnel cakes colored to look like brains when served. Comes in regular or zombie brain varieties. Eating one makes you feel lethargic and hungry, like the only thing that matters is your next snack fix, but you’re not willing to do much more than shamble toward it.
Mummies in a Blanket: Small hot dogs wrapped in biscuit dough and decorated to look like mummies. After eating this, you may or may not want to wrap yourself into a blanket and take a nap—ideally somewhere dark and spooky.

B. FUN AND GAMES. Mixed in with the food vendors are several booths advertising a variety of carnival games, including but not limited to the ones below.. The prizes you win may or may not be cursed. Best of luck!
NERF Gun Shooting Gallery: Use dreamotion to shoot foam darts from a gun at various ghostly and ghouly targets lined up on a platform. Advanced players may want to try their hand at making the guns shoot other objects. Water? Fire? Glitter bombs? The only limit is one’s imagination.
Ring Toss: A series of witch hats are lined up, and the objective is to toss rings on the hats for points. Did something just peek up from under one of the hats? It’s probably nothing to worry about.
Potion Bottles: A variation of the milk bottles game wherein you throw balls to knock over flasks and beakers filled with strangely-colored liquid. In most cases, the spilled potion is totally harmless. Once in a while, however, it may have some interesting effects on the player and/or the booth itself.
Slime Pit: There’s a giant pit of slime with a sign next to it: prizes within for those willing to get a bit messy! Said prizes range from giant candy bars to random silly toys to skeletal limbs…? Oh that belongs to the skeleton having fun in the pit, they might want it back.

II. ATTRACTIONS

A. Hall of Mirrors. A classic maze of mirrors that are usually filled with special effects to make one's reflection look distorted. In the beginning the distortions are more humorous, making one look super skinny or extremely curvy. However, the deeper one goes, the reflections begin to look a bit…strange. The mirrors begin to reflect the "worst" side of an individual, but in a more embarrassing manner. When they first wake up in the morning, having a bad hair day, dressed poorly, being lazy on the couch—mostly benign things that would be embarrassing to show others. But there are some that may reveal one's darker self they wish to hide from others and are forced to face—especially when the reflections will step out and follow the original until the end of the maze. They won't do anything, just follow silently like a shadow, but even that may be taxing for anyone, especially if others see. The reflection must either be pushed back into an empty mirror, or it will disappear on its own when exiting the building.

B. Wild Carousel. The creatures on this carousel are not just colorful painted steeds but are more frightening in nature and looking more undead than living. Skeletal horses, direwolves, fanged deer with bloody horns. What makes this ride truly terrifying, however, is that the creatures are alive, restrained only by the pole stuck through them. But there are times when they manage to break free, causing havoc as they run through the park. The only good news is they don't attack, instead aiming for the carnival food as if hungry. Either hang on or help capture them back!

C. Cirque du Souleil. Near the center of the carnival is a large circus tent, and it boasts a variety of shows that are death defying, terrorific, and guaranteed to make everyone scream in fright and awe. The usual acts are available to see: acrobatics, musical performances, theatrical skits, and using ghostly steeds to ride through the large arena. But what makes this circus unique is that all the performers are capable of separating their soul from their physical body, similar to astral projecting or dreamwalking outside of dreams and being visible to all. And now they're asking for volunteer pairs to either participate in a more simple act such as an acrobatic stunt on the swings or tight rope…or eat a special candy that will allow them to have an out of body experience via dreamwalking outside. The only "flaw" is their dreamwalking form will tend to float up to the top of the tent, so their partner who hasn't eaten the candy has to tether them via dreamotion to get through some simple obstacles. No worries, the professionals will help return the soul if they get lost.

D. Spinning Bumper Cups. A combination of the classic bumper cars and spinning cups rides, this attraction has its riders in skull shaped bumper cars that will randomly spin. Riders have the ability to fire off "pumpkin bombs" at the others, which will splatter pumpkin goop to slow down their car. It will also make the car spin for a few rotations. Dreamotion will also help boost the speed, stabilize a spinning car faster, and make the pumpkin bombs more explosive. Just be careful—the barrier around the arena is made of bones and therefore quite brittle. It's not unusual to see a car spin out and lose control driving through the carnival grounds. Stop the runaway car and bring it back! Or shoot people with pumpkin bombs.

E. Ferris Wheel. Ah, the ferris wheel, a gentle ride that elevates one high in the air to allow them to see the sights below, in this case the entire carnival grounds and the surrounding areas like the bordering forests, the Observatory, and the edge of Reverein. However, as with everything in this carnival, the ride is not always so gentle. There are times when the entire ride accelerates to a faster pace, causing the (fortunately) enclosed cabins to rock dangerously as it rotates around. There are times when it keeps going, not letting anyone off until three rotations. And then there are times when the top half of the cabin disappears, exposing the riders to the cooler winds. Fortunately handle bars will appear they can hold onto, but no seat belts. Enjoy the view?

F. Other Rides. There are plenty of rides and attractions at the carnival, too many to list all of them here. A roller coaster, tower drop, gravitron, bungee jumps, pendulum ship—whatever one might think exists, it's there in all its twisted nightmare glory. One thing they all have in common is the more fear and thrill and screams generated, the faster they go. Just hope the ride doesn't stall and get stuck…

III. HAUNTING CLUES

Although the main purpose for these prompts is to find the clues, anyone is free to use them for general use and not focus on getting the clue. For those who do participate, we'll be asking for thread during our Activity Check! Those who are TDMing regardless of application can also have their threads counted by commenting to this thread and following the directions.

#1. Haunted Dollhouse. There is a special building called the Haunted Dollhouse. It's similar to a haunted house, however this attraction is filled with moving porcelain dolls that will try to scare and chase those who enter (it's quite likely some members of the newly added Porcelain Town have volunteered to help). Sometimes, those who enter are cursed into a doll and are now vulnerable. They are also not always able to move on their own will. This is not great as sometimes the dolls kind of…malfunction and will actually become aggressive. The weapons they wield are also not props, so that's a problem. However, they are small and can only inflict minor wounds and can be easily taken out.

The main clue here is "Villains!' I shrieked. 'Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear up the planks! Here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart!" To help both those who have turned into dolls as well as get the clue, everyone has to find the right place where some candied hearts are hidden. Fortunately the "blood trail" (it's raspberry syrup) will help lead them to the right place.

#2. Abandoned House. A little away from the main attractions there is a run down house surrounded by trees…and a lot of ravens. A raven with red eyes will guide those who dare or wish to face a lost loved one to the house. Inside it's just filled with faceless busts and empty paintings, but soon they are filled with the images of those lost ones. It could be a person, pet, thing, but they are there, just staring. Only the eyes and mouths move, and what the person hears are their insecurities and fears related to how they lost whatever they see. Anyone else will either see the original blanks or their own personalized images.

The main clue is "And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting // On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door // Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning // Shall be lifted – nevermore". To get out of this house, they have to first look for the bust that has the red eyed raven on it. This will be tricky as there will be many ravens with different colored eyes. Once they do, there will be a small picture frame. They must manifest one or more of the images they are seeing and capture it into the frame. This is simply done by waving it like a net, but the manifestation can move around. This can be as easy or difficult as a player wants, and how affected the character is from what they see and hear can also be a factor. The more affected they are, the easier it is to manifest but difficult to capture. The less affected, it will be more difficult to manifest as they have to tap into that raw fear, but will be easier to capture.

#3. Hay Bale Maze. Just outside of the circus tent is a large hay bale maze with the hay…looking as if it's seen much better days. It's filled with spooks that like to jump scare maze goers or bodiless limbs that reach out to grab, but aside from that it's harmless. Except for one particular figure.

The main clue is "Who dares?" he demanded hoarsely of the courtiers who stood near him --"who dares insult us with this blasphemous mockery? Seize him and unmask him --that we may know whom we have to hang at sunrise, from the battlements!" There is a red clad figure wearing a skull mask. He will randomly bust through the hay walls and engage maze goers into a fight. Those who are incapable will flee in terror while the figure will chase, which will be a pretty good clue as to where he is. Once engaged, any weapon and dreamotion can be used at their disposal and the challenge is to just simply best him in a fight (not to the death). Striking the figure even once will earn a victory and the skull mask will be granted.

#4. Musical Catacombs. For a bit more lighthearted fun, there is an underground catacombs that is filled with tombs. Some of them have actual skeletons and ghosts sleeping in them, but they won't harm anyone if bothered. Just be a bit cranky, maybe throw a bone. At someone's head. Down here it's quite lively, filled with music, dancing, and a lot of alcohol. Minors will only get sparkling juice.

The main clue is "'Ha! ha! ha! — he! he! he! — a very good joke, indeed — an excellent jest. We will have many a rich laugh about it at the palazzo — he! he! he! — over our wine — he! he! he!' // 'The Amontillado!' I said." One of the games is a dancing game where the tombs will light up a certain color and participants have to properly hit the correct corresponding floor panel (basically a music rhythm/DDR themed game). Should they make a perfect score, one of the tombs will open and have a crusty wine bottle in it. It has competitor and co-op mode.

[Well, well, well, look what happened to be here now. A little doll of that was flying around snapping at things. It would be the thing of nightmares for some, but for Reaper, he was deeply amused by the whole thing. Halloween was his favourite time of year and October his favourite month. Even better, watching others endure Halloween at its best was all he could hope for.

He had picked out his favourite outfit for the event, dramatic as always. His Pumpkin Head actually floated above his shoulders for complete effect too.

He moved to snatch the vampiric doll fluttering about for closer examination.]

Is that you, little lover boy? How's your far more competent wife?

[And suddenly snatched—though he's not sure if he should be grateful or concerned at the moment. On the one hand, he's no longer free moving. On the other...]

...You.

[His painted eyes narrow. This is one man he wouldn't mind biting.

It had taken him a moment to put it all together, but hearing the voice, seeing the figure, and then the familiar taunt—Reaper was it? So that was his name. He only knows a little from what Tifa had told him, but if he had known it was the same man that he faced at the reactor with Octavius— Does she even know?

A click of his tongue.]

She's fine.

[He also will not deny 1) Tifa is more competent (she is very competent and he will gladly elevate her above himself); 2) she is his wife. He can at least give Reaper some points for that. Like one point. Maybe.]

[So, they were going to turn into adorable little toys, were they? That seemed like it was a flawed existence by his measure. Of course, his opinion of Eustace fell purely in the 'must troll' category since they had met when the sun went haywire.

He examined the toy version of Eustace by bringing the little vampire closer to his pumpkin head. He made a soft 'hmmm' noise as he considered the whole change.]

Good. I expect nothing less from her. [He had standard, don't you know?] And I see you're having some issues getting on target. That seems to be a common theme with you. Do we need to find you a little toybox?
flamekthunder: (ϟ 172)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-10-26 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
[What does Tifa see in this guy— He still hit you at least once you know—

And yet he praises her. Dammit. Personal dislike versus supportive of any praise towards his wife—how conflicting.

In any case, he can't really fault Reaper's assessment. He is really having a hell of a time and while he has his own pride, it's not so much that he can't acknowledge his weaknesses. That and he doesn't really rise up to obvious baits, anyway.]

I'd prefer just finding the heart so I can be rid of this "curse."
b_a_n_g: (03)

[personal profile] b_a_n_g 2022-10-26 01:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[Reaper couldn't help himself. He liked dramatic people, and he also liked people that gave him the impression they could land a solid punch on him. Tifa seemed the sort. Plus, she had been shy about the dress but willing to go all out anyway.

He considered Eustace with a growling hum then opened his hand palm up so that the toy version was free to move about.]

And here I thought you weren't chasing hearts anymore. T'sk, t'sk, loyalty to one's partner stands for something. [Now he was just digging because he could.] Come along then, there's a new heart for you to try to steal.
flamekthunder: (ϟ 030)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-10-26 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
[PLEASE. Eustace just gives him a very flat look before he removes himself from Reaper's hand. At least he learned how to float on his own...]

How do you know Tifa?

[Yep just going to inquire about that because it's been bugging. Yeah she's told him, but he wants to hear it from him.

Also he fervently hopes Reaper gets cursed—but he probably won't.]
b_a_n_g: (08)

[personal profile] b_a_n_g 2022-10-27 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[Wasn't that adorable? The sentient toy could float. That was such a vampire trait.]

She was my King, and I her knight once upon a time.

[That gave the impression that he had a loyalty there that didn't particularly exist. He had seen her and recognized her after that event at the Wild Harvest, and he was starting to creep his presence into that place more and more lately.

He gestured with a hand for them to start exploring to try to solve the issue of toydome that was happening here.]

Do you have any of your abilities like that, or are you helpless?
flamekthunder: (ϟ 079)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-10-27 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[...

THAT SHOULDN'T IRK HIM BUT SOMEHOW IT DOES he's the only one who can be her knight dammit—no, no, that's childish he's fine he's fine. Though that does make him wonder what kind of scenario...a play? The storybooks? Hmm.... Well, as long as he's supportive of Tifa he'll let it pass...]

I can use my dreamotion, however the curse on this form has a tendency to make me act against my will.

[Like when he just flew at Reaper earlier.]
b_a_n_g: (02)

[personal profile] b_a_n_g 2022-10-28 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Behind his mask, Reaper's lips tugged into a bit of a smirk. The toy Eustace couldn't make much in the way of expressions, but there was a sense that what he had said had ruffled some feathers. It amused him greatly, especially knowing that his association with Tifa was weak.]

Does that upset you?

[He turned and began to stride away so they could go in search of the heart that would return Eustace to a form that would be useful.]

Oh I'm not worried about you acting out. You're just wee. Can you cast your lightning like that?
flamekthunder: (ϟ 051)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-10-28 02:57 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

[Denial. Yeah okay, it did a little, but reason has returned. There's no point in falling for this bastard's man's tricks.]

If I did, I would hope you would stop me regardless.

[Having to ask this guy a favor...ugh. Their first encounter has really colored how to deal with Reaper. Once again, why do you associate with this man, Tifa—

And in answer, a crackle of lightning erupts around them, lighting the room as it spreads outward and coming threateningly close to Reaper before dissipating harmlessly into the air.]

Does that answer your question?
b_a_n_g: (Default)

[personal profile] b_a_n_g 2022-10-30 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
[Reaper issued a low dark gravelly chuckle at the request, and he turned his head to watch the little toy.]

Oh don't worry. Putting you down would be a pleasure.

[He likely wouldn't kill because who killed toys anyway? However, he wouldn't be afraid to defend himself, and he tended to be rough when it came to that sort of prospect. He was going to have to experiment on if he could life drain the hell out of Eustace at some point.

Reaper stood his ground as the lightning washed across the room, not at all intimidated. He had been electrocuted to death on more than one occasion, and, while unpleasant, it hardly ever kept him down for long. All the same, the hairs on his arms still stood on end with the electricity.

He clicked his tongue in disapproval like his mother used to. Not mad, just disappointed.]

I see your aim is as good now as it was with the fake sun. I'm sure you're likeable in other ways for some.
flamekthunder: (ϟ 036)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-11-02 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
[In his usual flat tone:]

Given that you're unharmed, I'd say my aim and control was perfect.

[Though he's not really going to say much more about it since it's pointless. An idle quip for a boring insult. Last part though—very true, he's not even going to pretend otherwise that he's friendly or likeable to others.]

Let's go.
b_a_n_g: (Default)

[personal profile] b_a_n_g 2022-11-03 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I would have preferred electrocution.

[He was still walking so they could search for the necessary hearts in order to return Eustace to a much more exciting form.]

What have you explored so far?
flamekthunder: (ϟ 139)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-11-04 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll keep that in mind for next time.

[Just greet him with a bolt of lightning. He'd like that, right?

"Jokes" aside—]

I was able to cover most of the first floor before I was turned into this. That leaves this last room and the upper floor.
b_a_n_g: (05)

[personal profile] b_a_n_g 2022-11-06 04:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Fine, you cover the low ground given you're... tiny. I'll cover the high ground.

[He mostly wanted to see this toy version of Eustace awkwardly on the ground. It would amuse him greatly, but also, he wasn't getting on his knees to look under objects. He had a reputation that put limits on how helpful he was willing to be.

Still, he did as he said that he would in that he began to systematically move around the room in search of the 'hearts' that they were supposed to be looking for.]

If you get scared, you can hide behind me by the way.
flamekthunder: (ϟ 043)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-11-07 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
[A snort as Eustace hovers closer to the ground. At least he can move faster this way instead of toddling along if he tried to walk.]

As if you'd actually stay in place.

[As ridiculous it might seem, he checks under the chairs, tables, and couches in case they decided to hide them underneath. But in doing so he does find something particular.]

...Come over here and move this chair and take a look at this rug. Is it just me or is it going beneath this "wall"?

[Indeed, once Reaper comes cover, he will notice that the rug doesn't end at the edge of the wall but seems to continue on beneath it instead. It can only mean one thing—]
b_a_n_g: (06)

[personal profile] b_a_n_g 2022-11-11 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[He issued a low chuckle that meant that Eustace might actually be right, and he'd probably move. He also could still turn to smoke at will, which was generally unable for acting as cover for someone else.

He was looking around in high places when he was called over. Curiosity drew him more than to request and he picked up the chair and set it aside, head tilting to one side to indicate his curiosity as the carpet did indeed go under the wall.

He clicked his tongue on the roof of his mouth in disapproval.]

Sloppy. Whoever made this place was amateur.

[He reached out to the wall in question to see how solid it was. After all, illusions could be abound.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 172)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-11-11 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a building for entertainment, I doubt they wanted it to be that difficult.

[Still, this is one that would definitely fool most. And when Reaper touches the wall, it'll be solid—but clearly hollow compared to the rest of the wall. And it won't be too difficult to open it either, as touching an obvious discolored square on the wall will slide it open.]
b_a_n_g: (03)

[personal profile] b_a_n_g 2022-11-12 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
[He seriously considered just kicking the door off of its hidden hinges to make a point, but it would create a considerable amount of noise. Maybe it'd even earn him the same toy treatment that Eustace enjoyed right now.

So he slammed his fist into the panel and the door swung open on smooth hinges. He gestured with a hand at the newly created opening to another part of the place.]

Lady's first....
flamekthunder: (ϟ 194)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-11-12 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
[The very flat look Eustace is giving him right now.] The flattest voice in the history of facial expressions. So flat all the wrinkles from the rug have disappeared.

But whatever, he'll toddle in first. There isn't too much the see until the lights "mysteriously" come on and reveals itself to be a secret passage that would lead to two different rooms.]
b_a_n_g: (07)

[personal profile] b_a_n_g 2022-11-15 02:55 pm (UTC)(link)
[Reaper's face might be hidden behind a mask, but his amusement was on full display as he watched Eustace totter inside the new area. He followed, overtaking the toy companion within two strides and moving around to one of the new rooms.]

Perhaps you should ride on a shoulder or foot when you're walking around. It might speed you up some.

[It was also a gesture he considered only children doing.]
flamekthunder: (ϟ 125)

[personal profile] flamekthunder 2022-11-16 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps the so-called gentleman should have offered instead.

[Still dry as a desert. But then he remembers he can freaking fly, so he hops out and nyooms around, first flying around Reaper for a brief glance before nyooming over to the next room.]

It's hard to tell if these are just backrooms for the staff rather than part of the attraction.

[In which case—oops. They're still decorated and creepy enough, but they do have a feeling of more for prop storage with things tossed in haphazardly. But why is there an Iron Maiden and some weird chains and racks—

Anyway blood...or raspberry syrup whatever. Going to keep a look out.]
